a basic takeaway that makes a lot of sense that i'd never thought of before: if you've got 2 players, a guard and a big, who each shoot 45% from midrange, you'd prefer to have the guard take those shots because his misses are more likely to be rebounded by his team

Though Howard is shooting just 46.9 percent from the foul line this season, while Nash is tied with Mark Price for the best free throw percentage in NBA history at 90.4 percent, the Lakers center said he's had enough of people giving him advice.

"Listen, he was just suggesting some things, but it's not something that we've already talked about or anybody else has suggested," Howard said. My big worries about Rivers were that he didn't have the athleticism to cut it in the NBA as a slasher, and that he wasn't a good enough shooter to make up for it. That seems to be the case so far. But that said, keep in mind that there's a long history in this league of rookie guards getting absolutely slaughtered, before emerging in year 2 as a real basketball player.
