Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting. Moreover, the Pelicans played minor league baseball in New Orleans in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959 and in 1977.
Gayle Benson, Benson's wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold.

i agree that i'm cool with teams going away from "intimidating" names (bobcats, ugh) but pelicans is a bit too goofy

i mean really anthony davis could be one of the best big men of all time and he plays for A TEAM CALLED THE PELICANS smh

after suffering through so many awful new names in football and basketball we finally have one that:

1. is tied to the community
2. is a fucking PLURAL

the other options were all pretty terrible. This is good. Embrace it!

I mean Tennessee Titans, Oklahoma City Thunder, but it's the pelicans that people are bashing smh
