You guys need to listen to his podcast from today. Simmons talks to the guy who wrote the ESPN oral history book and he goes into a tangent about how he shouldn't have talked to him because he comes across like an asshole.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 2 June 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

I turned it off after five minutes because it was so awkward.

polyphonic, Thursday, 2 June 2011 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah really the only podcasts he does that are worth it are the nba guys (stein/bucher/etc), his random wizards fan friend who seems pretty funny and they mostly stick to actually talking about basketball, and a few of the one-shot guests when he knows enough to mostly shut up and get out of the way like when jackie macmullen showed up a month or so ago

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Thursday, 2 June 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

This one is utterly embarrassing. He mentions that he thought he came across a little rough, then they have to talk about, and then he brings it up again later, and ends with another mention because the guy is going to add some stuff and remove others when it comes out in paperback.

Confirms all the insecurities of the NYTimes piece.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 2 June 2011 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

that photo is so weird -- i think the concept is fine but his expression is bizarre

b.o.s.e. (banned ones still envy) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 June 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

it's so photoshopped, also since when did bill simmons look like alec baldwin

dayo, Friday, 3 June 2011 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

haha i was just thinking, he's looking sorta distinguished (meaning old) lately

Princess TamTam, Friday, 3 June 2011 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

listening now; this is really lol. miller is handling it well.

call all destroyer, Friday, 3 June 2011 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

He handles it like a pro, even though he's obviously perplexed. I would have loved to see Miller's face as Bill whines and complains.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 June 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

i am feeling this kind of aghast anticipation for learning what exactly the overlap is of the aesthetics of bill simmons and carles

call all destroyer, Monday, 6 June 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

carles on grantland is gonna be so ridiculous & unintentionally hilarious

J0rdan S., Monday, 6 June 2011 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

that is really one of those ideas that everyone should've been excited about for 10 mins after it was pitched before slowly realizing that it's an awful, awful idea

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

hipster jay cutler

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

knowing that bill simmons reads carles is an unfortunate colliding of the worlds in my head

I would have been much more comfortable knowing that simmons was unaware of carles's existence

dayo, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

I could give a fuck about Carles, only name on the contributors list that matters is KEN TREMENDOUS.

(I also like Katie Bakes a lot, and Simmons himself. But seriously this could be like 99% garbage plus twice-yearly Mike Schur writing about sports/anything and it would give me something to read at least twice a year.)

positive rapper (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

I skimmed the NYTMag piece, only lol was "baseball stat fetishization." Proof that sportswriters are the lowest form of life (ie God bless Barry Bonds).

the design of the site really really looks like a free wordpress theme

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

totally!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

omg it seems that simmons only created this site so he could post his columns on a layout that has a permanent footnote column

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Why is the top third of the page so horrible? Do they not have any designers at all over there?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

design critique 4 u bill smins

Eight and a half years have passed. I can't remember how Jimmy answered, just what his face looked like. You wouldn't call it nervous, you wouldn't call it overwhelmed, you wouldn't call it anything … he didn't fucking know.

going for that "hard pg-13" i guess

Thank god they have someone covering the AL east!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

it looks like yard work! which was when, 2005?

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

omg yard work! I miss that.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I love the defensive descriptions of the coming soon sites on the last. SEE, WE COULD'VE CALLED IT "FOXBORO" BUT WE DIDN'T!!

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

on the left, rather.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, this site has no content. What happened to the Katie Bakes story?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

the links to the second page of the articles are fucked up--they open the piece in a single page but kick you back to the beginning.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

haha this totally looks like someone using a wordpress theme in like late 2006 to try to emulate mcsweeneys or arts and letters daily

"presented by klondike"

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

also footnotes basically suck, it's like extra tldr

you're a professional, professionally put that shit into the body as a point you're trying to make or leave it out, you're not citing academic journals or something

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

footnote: they are hilarious when used properly

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

the klosterman story was a fun read!

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

re footnotes it maybe has something to do w/the strange phenomenon of dfw becoming an avatar for hack writers harboring pretensions everywhere

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Grantland is ugly, but it's a shit ton easier to read/look at than Gawker Media's current format.

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the design is amateurish but I'm not gonna say that bothers me in the least. As long as the articles are easy to read, right? But I agree with the "hard PG-13" comment above, it's like he knew he could use one "fuck" in his column and was just debating where to put it

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

it looks like yard work! which was when, 2005?

tbh if grantland had rotating banners (including, naturally, BIG BEAR) all would be a-ok here

unique housing opportunity (swanbed.gif) (govern yourself accordingly), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

Willing to bet that Klosterman, not Simmons, is the one that pushed for Carles.

Cunga, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

going out on a limb with that
