points, rebounds, and assists?

i was complaining about people touting the combined stat line. "sure, other people have scored more points and gotten more rebounds, but only four players have done that AND had as many assists."

yeah I'm feelin lukas on this one. this year I was kinda bugged by the whole 'tyreke evans is averaging a stat line that only LBJ, MJ and the big O have ever done" - his team still had an awful record overall and are you really gonna say he is as good as those other dudes?

also it's kind of a problem in basketball where the game has changed so much over the years that you can't really use stats to compare players from different eras, cf. that ridic. wilt line above

tbf none of that was at all necessary, btw the pistons are easily the most demoralized team ive seen this early in the season

they are one of the saddest teams in all of sports -- two aging ex-stars playing out their careers in anonymity, two high priced free agents that were overpaid by like 50% each turning the team into a dead weight and keeping it from getting any better & a mix of young guys like stuckey/maxiel/daye that are good but have minimal chance (if at all) to be real 'impact' guys

i think rondo is just practicing, basically, i mean why not drop 20 dimes and get in that groove before they start playing teams with real actual defenses. shades of larry shooting left-handed just because he was bored and maybe, someday, it might come in handy

plus don't underrate the fact that this is now his fourth year with basically the same group, and an extra year with pierce, playing 90-100 real games each year with them. bound to develop some crazy telepathy. i think teams undervalue this continuity; cf spurs, lakers; this is even a decent justification for the magic's no-move summer maybe

^i mean spurs and lakers are obvious examples that value this core continuity and are thus dangerous, hence why does one keep derek fisher, well because in addition to a few playoff daggers left in him he must know every microscopic twitch of kobe's game at this point

which means adding that kind of familiarity to rondo's raw physical talent and mad creativity = HAVOC

Actually this rondo streak has been making me think about how amazing stockton (whom i never saw) must have been - 15 assists is just a ridiculous number for any night

I recently watched the video of all 30 of scott skiles' assists when he set the record and it seems the definition of 'assist' is pretty loose in the NBA

btw last night was a great example of rondo adapting his game--he was much more aggressive trying to score against the bucks because

1) it was a close game
2) they were giving him too much space to drive or shoot--he hit 2 or 3 j's handily.

stockton's thing was that he was so simultaneously boring to watch, casually brilliant and dirty as a motherfucker
imagine a shorter, faster, more vicious time duncan who passed better than he could shoot
he was hard to really be a fan for but he could absolutely torch you

tbf stockton was also an excellent shotter

eh he also had 6tos due mostly to trying to force passes early in the game - he got in the flow but you cannot possibly say you havent seen this assist mad behavior

stockton was easy to love, c'mon

stockton was relentless

xp yeah i'm not saying i haven't seen it--the last 4 years of c's teams frequently have an overpassing problem and rondo is offender #1--my point is more that once he figured out the flow of the game he adjusted and looked for his shot a bit more. totally agree that he is always looking to pass first this season.

but easy to love? he was tight lipped and played vicious and rough as a motherfucker and seemed like a man apart from the culture. the distance he's kept from the game in his post-career life is downright barry sandersesque. Dude was the best but he was NOT easy to love.
that said, stockton/malone on NBA Jam was the ONLY team to play.

interesting fact i didn't know (and then i'll stop turning this into the Stockton memorial threadjack), but dude never had a regular season triple double in his whole career. Just one in a playoff game.

btw rondo's new dive into the paint/pass behind the defense out to big baby in the corner move is super-money, they ran it perfectly 3-4 times last night.

I love unassuming dudes who are totally locked in and don't really care about their own status/reputation. playing vicious is also a big + in my book, also knowing how to play dirty/work the refs. love all these qualities
