glen rice was still pretty deadly, he was just the decoy probably more than was warranted, phil didn't seem to like him for whatever reason. what sticks out to me is vlade + rick fox over sedale ("the thief!"), ceballos, ron harper and probably a shitload of the old old timers. some players are downgraded cos of the lean years they contributed to played in, including luke imo, which is fair enough i guess.

"glen rice was still pretty deadly"
Uh not really. He was pretty much a waste in his year and a half there.

I don't know what dude you are remembering, but he was a mediocre shooter at best in his time with LA and he was a lousy defender per usual.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link
ok those two years he put up 17.5 and 16 ppg respectively in the regular season as 3rd option to fn shaq & kobe, in the first championship run (which saw more knee problems and yeah bad d newsflash) he averaged 41% on threes in the playoffs and was more key than YOUUUUU remember dude
― CHILLS (tremendoid), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:21 (fourteen years ago) link
per some article jerry west cited phil's misuse (iho) of rice as one of the reasons for leaving although come to think of it if i traded eddie jones away and wanted to play it off i'd say some bs like that too. or maybe prime eddie wouldn't make yr 12 man rotation either hmmmm
― CHILLS (tremendoid), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:29 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah he was keyly averaging 12 pts a game on 40% shooting, getting no rebounds and basically getting torched by whatever small forward/big guard he was pretending to defend during that championship run. No surprise he wasn't back next year.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:11 (fourteen years ago) link
I thought Eddie Jones was great btw. He would have been great under Jackson too.

heck yeah i mean i would have rather kept him obv. (also thought it was odd FINALLY getting rid of elden right as he started playing worth a dang, but i didn't complain, too many years of frustration there) but pure shooting helped that team like nobody's business. no minute rice wouldve meant a dynasty deferred. who knew fish wd shoot the fuck out the ball the next year

Something in my gut tells me that if Kobe tried to outdo Chamberlain's 100 pt game, the refs would just foul him out of the game and look amused as he walked off the court.

The weirdness of that list (Artest at 50! Ariza at 20-ish!) makes me want to see a list for a less storied franchise - like, who is the 50th-greatest Charlotte Bobcat? Bernard Robinson?

i think that list is too long. it just ends up being kinda sad, mostly lol in the bottom 25.

luke is a shrewd passer, always knows where the ball needs to go, they seem to play their best offense when he's on the floor. still not someone i want shooting tho his 3pt % is impressive this year so who knows, that would take him to the next level. he was getting less tentative before the injury

gasonned:
In case the Lakers' startling lack of effort wasn't enough, the night took another turn when Jackson approached a handful of reporters who had been interviewing Gasol after the game.
"You guys done with Pau?" Jackson asked. He then turned to Gasol. "Pau, I want you to meet a friend of mine."
Jackson walked Gasol into an adjacent room and introduced him to Charles Oakley, a fierce power forward in his day and a player Jackson coached on the Chicago Bulls in the 1980s.
Oakley, his hair now flecked with gray, was later asked by a reporter if he gave Gasol some strong advice.
"Always," he said, smiling.
The Lakers are 0-2 on their three-game trip. They haven't lost three consecutive games since acquiring Gasol in February 2008.

Asked whether Garnett looked healthy, Gasol said, "I don't know exactly what's going on with him. He's struggling. I think he's physically limited. But that's all I see. All I heard. He competes. He's still a competitor, but I feel like he's limited; otherwise, he'd be contributing a lot more."
...one month later...
"I really don't like to talk about that aspect of a person's game ... other than the fact that he's been weak and sickly," coach Phil Jackson said before the Lakers played the Bobcats on Friday, setting up the delivery of the jab with a pregnant pause. When asked to clarify, Jackson said that Gasol has been feeling "under the weather" and he will have to monitor his 7-foot power forward's playing time.

His hair is orange/yellow now, and carved into it is the word DEFENSE but in three different languages – Japanese, Hebrew and Hindu. He had it done in Orlando after a short workout Saturday.
During an interview before the game, he declined to say what the words meant, but he let it be known earlier on his Twitter account.
"It's like a school project for you,'' Artest said before the Magic-Lakers game at Amway Arena. "Take a picture and look it up. Ask your wife. Or just goggle it, and find out.''
