Ha, in the Tim Rogers review he estimates it took him about 20 *hours* to get into the swing of things, then quotes Kojima saying it only gets fun at about the *halfway point.* If Rogers says the game took him about 80 hours, that puts it around *40 hours* until it gets "fun." Or, you know, somewhere between 20 and 40 hours. Which is a heck of a curve!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 November 2019 13:23 (four years ago) link

i wouldn't assume the game is 80 hours, tim is a slowgamer. he said DQXI was 100 hours and i finished that in 50-60

ciderpress, Monday, 4 November 2019 13:29 (four years ago) link

60 hours is a number I've seen a lot of, so that is probably more accurate at a good pace. But then we're still talking a couple of dozen hours to get into the swing of things, and/or "fun."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 November 2019 13:45 (four years ago) link

Which lol is probably my usually pace for all games!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 November 2019 13:45 (four years ago) link

Why does Tim Rogers sound like a permanently-sarcastic Nolan-Batman?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 4 November 2019 14:55 (four years ago) link

that's the "american explaining art/culture" voice imo

mh, Monday, 4 November 2019 14:57 (four years ago) link

Close cousin of the 'American podcast' voice, eh? It's quite annoying. Even when he's being sincere it's hard to take him seriously

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 4 November 2019 15:09 (four years ago) link

I'm likely never playing this game but I also watched that entire video review.

good combination imo

Tim Rogers is the worst version of whatever you think he is

what are the good video game websites? i'm allergic to places like kotaku. i check out rockpapershotgun sometimes tho it's uneven, eurogamer (but also uneven)...

Mordy, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:39 (four years ago) link

imo, there are zero good game websites left

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

I like some stuff on Polygon

mh, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:45 (four years ago) link

Polygon and kotaku are basically the same site

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:47 (four years ago) link

i like polygon more than kotaku but yeah they often feel the same now.

Nhex, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

i look at some jrpg-centric sites for news and reviews but there's nowhere with particularly good articles atm

https://gamehistory.org/every-english-language-video-game-magazine/

Thanks to subscriptions being included with the GameStop rewards card, the magazine’s circulation is over 7 million – the fourth largest overall circulation in the country

i had no idea!

fwiw i go to eurogamer to find out what's newly released and what's the rumpus and for reviews occasionally
tbh ILG is my primary game website and has sold me on buying more things than anywhere else maybe ever

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:57 (four years ago) link

I think the best way to do it these days is to just follow a lot of indie game devs on twitter

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 4 November 2019 21:42 (four years ago) link

the best way is just to follow/know a bunch of gamers e.g. this board

ciderpress, Monday, 4 November 2019 21:46 (four years ago) link

I just copy josh

be goose, do crimes (||||||||), Monday, 4 November 2019 21:51 (four years ago) link

eurogamer reviews are uneven but the writers there at least attempt to situate the games into some kind of genre context, explain how it fits into the culture, etc - most other reviews just feel like recaps

ilg is good but really isn't large enough to really be sufficient. lots of new interesting games we don't get around to at all or not until much later. i found dice dungeons through steam by accident (i was like a new terry cavvanaugh game??? how did i not hear about this?) it was great but no one here had mentioned it. curious about like disco elysium but i don't think anyone here has played it. i don't think anyone has played frostpunk. idk it seems like there's a lot of probably worthwhile games that we just don't have the numbers + dedication to cover just in the course of talking. has anyone played the new age of wonders (planetfall)? i do have to thank ilg for clueing me into Control an okay fun game <thumbsup>

Mordy, Monday, 4 November 2019 22:11 (four years ago) link

nb even if i knew disco elysium was amazing sadly it's pc-only atm. but frostpunk is now on the ps4!

Mordy, Monday, 4 November 2019 22:12 (four years ago) link

I'm so far behind that there's no way one of you wouldn't have mentioned a game if it were any good.

thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 13:26 (four years ago) link

eurogamer's the only consistently decent games site imo

melts are absolutely the best you can hope for if you take it upon yourself to visit an online forum devoted to gaming tbh

Control under $40 with the coupon! Just picked it up because I doubt it's going to get much cheaper on Black Friday.

Whoops! $25 at Target for BF.

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 23:47 (four years ago) link

I'm hoping this means a deep discount on the Playstation store, too.

LOL, I thought that Death Stranding came out already, I guess not? I have seen literally zero about that game that seems appealing.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 23:53 (four years ago) link

suspect it'll be $40 or less by Christmas

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 23:56 (four years ago) link

if i give in and buy it this weekend it's purely to support its weirdness (and probable awfulness)

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 November 2019 23:56 (four years ago) link

Nioh is on the PS+ freebie menu this month which i'm actually looking forward to playing

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 23:57 (four years ago) link

nioh is good

probably 5 of my "top ten gaming moments" are from metal gear solid games so yalls death stranding doomsaying is just fueling my anticipation. watch this space as i liveblog my unfolding disappointment

adam, Thursday, 7 November 2019 00:57 (four years ago) link

i'm not even a metal gear / kojima fan and i think death stranding looks cool. just not as cool as my jrpg backlog

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 November 2019 01:17 (four years ago) link

I misread "jrpg backlog" as "rpg backpack," which seems kinda like what Death Stranding is.

(I've never played any Metal Gear Solid games and long assumed that dude was just some GI Joe character I got to play as in Smash Bros.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 01:28 (four years ago) link

Oh, Josh.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 7 November 2019 01:51 (four years ago) link

it's the least good of the metal gear series but it's still awesome, the balloon shit is so funny every time

negative death stranding review: https://www.giantbomb.com/reviews/death-stranding-review/1900-795/

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 7 November 2019 06:11 (four years ago) link

giant bomb was never going to like it

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 November 2019 06:14 (four years ago) link

ah giant bomb, or as a friend called it, "that old men sighing channel"

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 7 November 2019 10:40 (four years ago) link

The red flag for me is that even the wildly positive reviews have some serious (or at least alarming) contradictions. "Is it fun? Well, no, but ..." "It takes about 20 hours before you finally ... " "It's like if Breath of the Wild were boring on purpose," and so on. Honestly, from what I've seen or read of it it doesn't even look that weird, imo, by video game standards, and all the actors/celebrity cameos seem ... distracting. Plus, it appears very long stretches of the game (most of it?) are about balancing a bunch of stuff on your back while you traverse rough terrain, soothing your upset baby and repairing your shoes.

Which is a way of saying I look forward to hearing what some of you think of it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:01 (four years ago) link

See, that Giant Bomb pan is more or less identical to even the raves.
