I decided to take the plunge on one of these things; the lack of backwards compatability REALLY blows since I have a ton of old games that I still want to play, but between the good games that are out for it now, all the PS4 games I've already banked using PS+, and the fact that my old PS3 was getting too loud to use as a blu-ray player any more I said fuck it.
I can't quite dive into it full-on just yet since I'm going to swap out the stock HD for a 2 TB drive tonight and I didn't want to install everything twice (Destiny took HOURS to install last night ffs), but the little bit of tooling around that I've done with it so far has been really impressive. the new Dualshocks in particular are just a treat to use, although I had to get 2 just because the charge drains so fast (still better than the Wii U Gamepad, though). the Gold headset is p slick too - it's obviously the least of all the sets of headphones I own, but it's comfortable enough for me to wear it down until the battery dies, sounds good enough that I can turn off my speakers during gametime, and includes a built-in mic for chat & voice commands (which would be a lot cooler if I hadn't seen how much slicker the Xbone's voice stuff is).
anyway feel free to add my PSN ID (trdn89) if you need folks with whom to play.

― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 25 September 2014 23:20 (six years ago) link
I think I typically get a few hours, but the cable provided is like 30cm, so you can't charge-while-you-play unless you're parked in front of the TV. Also, what typically happens to me is that I've charged it, played for a couple of hours, watched some Netflix. Next day I go to play and after 5mins it says it's dead.
― CraigG, Friday, 26 September 2014 14:28 (six years ago) link
Yeah, the battery life on the DS4 is terrible. If you've got an outlet near where you play, though, you can plug a microUSB cable into any USB charger and play and charge at the same time.

I haven't played most of those, KM, but I assume the likes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider and maybe even Last of Us fit in there, too. They're kind of all essentially interactive blockbuster movies, driven by plot over game play. Personally, as a solo offline player, so far I enjoy the template.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:19 (one month ago) link
don't think god of war belongs in that group unless the new one is way more open world than it looks, it goes with uncharted et al

― ciderpress, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:38 (one month ago) link
Control admittedly does kinda become that sort of game, though the world is more hermetic, like a Metroid title. But I think the sheer "personality" of the game is enough to distinguish it from other third-person action explore-'em-ups.
― Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:39 (one month ago) link
xp josh don't get me wrong, about twice per console generation i get totally sucked in and enjoy it a lot. RDR2 was the main example of that for me, for PS4
but at this point, for that kind of game, it's like ok what flavor do you want - samurai, cowboy, space, etc
― Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:43 (one month ago) link
ultimately god of war is a character action game and i don't think the cinematic excess can change thatcontrol is a shooter/adventure game hybrid which puts it closer to metroid or resident evil than uncharted

yeah control has a lot in common with metroid

My wife took a gander at me playing Bloodborne yesterday and kind of dismissed it, saying "eh, the graphics don't look that special." I told her the game was already five or so years old, but she should have checked out God of War when I was playing that one. Gorgeous. If I ever start RDR2 or Last of Us 2 I'll be sure to call her down for those ones, too. Though to be fair the not photo realistic qualities of the Souls games are part of their appeal. I keep seeing clips of Demon's Souls PS5 and I can't imagine playing one of these games that looks that slick.

Sweet, I’m looking forward to it. I started Control and eh, not sure about it. Played about a half hour - 45 mins, and it’s kind of a pretty generic shooter. My expectations may have been too high. Also looking for a deal on cloudpunk, I have a feeling I’ll click with that one.
― calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 16:46 (one month ago) link
Keep on with Control. I did the same as you: played about 40 mins and figured I wasn't in the mood for a shooter, and didn't like some of the physics either, but it really opens up (or more accurately gets deeper) as you go. Very little generic about it after a couple of hours
― Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 17:24 (one month ago) link

Xp ummm no? Its not something I'd noticed myself. How do you mean? The physics thing that annoyed me is that objects didn't really seem to have any weight to them. You walk into a tea trolley and it just falls over like it's made of paper. It stops being annoying quite soon after though, especially once you start gaining more powers, which is when the fame gets really satisfying and fun

Completed God of War. It's not a particularly long game. Neither does it feel like a particularly BIG game compared to a few that I've played, despite the action taking place over several different realms. That said, there's so much to discover and the post-story game feels like a challenge in itself. Along with the action, I really admired its subtleties and puzzle elements. I'm starting to get an almost sixth sense for sniffing out Odin's Ravens (there was one yesterday that was almost invisible against a bright blue sky, but I just knew it was there). There's also something immensely satisfying about seeking out treasure chests and those buckets that hang from roofs and trees: In fact this is one of the most appealing parts of the game for me.Likewise, the action and fighting parts of the game operate between slightly clunky and slow reaction times (which can be frustrating: I sometimes feel like I'm hitting block or attack and Kratos just kind of stands there getting whooped), but other times hitting the right combination of buttons at the right times can be devastating. Fights are often difficult, but it's rare that I'll need to attempt more than 3-4 tries on the hardest ones, which stops it dissolving into just a repetitive button-mashing frenzy.I have to say the acting and scenery are some of the best I've seen in any game. Kratos and Atreus (also Mimir, Freya and Baldur) are truly believable, complex characters. The storyline did confuse me a little at points. There's a lot of lore, and often I'd be concentrating on paddling my boat in the right direction and unable to concentrate on Mimir and Atreus whipping through some essential exposition points.Anyway, a great game. Now to deck some Valkyries
― Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 12:12 (one month ago) link
Yeah, I stopped after I got one or two of them, who iirc were much harder than the rest of the game.
I also think a lot of God of War is funny. There's some great writing, especially the talking head.

― (the one with 3 L's) (Willl), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 13:54 (one month ago) link
Willl, let me know how you get on. I would say just go with it: It's a fairly linear game, but the fun is in the discovery, the weirdness, the uncanniness of it and slowly pieceing together what the hell is going on. I don't want to spoil it, but it's very much a Metroid-style game that lets you acquire really quite impressive abilities which open up the game a whole lot. It really doesn't spoon feed you though, so PM me if you have any Qs
― Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 14:18 (one month ago) link
dog latin is spot on. I would add - run and gun as much as you need, and do any Artifacts of Power missions ASAP. Takes a while to get any defensive abilities.

I'm about 12 hours into Control now, what a great game - I see what you meant about it being an uncanny Metroid. Really enjoying piecing together the backstory (and flinging filing cabinets around with my mind).I think the difficulty is pitched just right as well, challenging but hasn't provoked a rage quit yet. Good recommendation :)

I almost forgot I bought it when it was last on sale. Whenever I finish Bloodborne (sooner rather than later) I think I want to play the latest Ori, the maybe try Carrion, then ... maybe a mix of Control and RDR2? I have the latter on disc, so it'll likely live in the machine, but Control I bought digitally, which makes it easier to switch around, I think.

― Nhex, Monday, 7 December 2020 14:13 (one month ago) link
i think the PS5 version is less save-state-y and more about booting directly to developer-specified waypoints at the start of levels/missions rather than the title screen

Amazing that such a basic thing that's been thrown in with emulators for decades is seen as a next gen advancement and even then it's still going to be a not-quite-save-state.

save states are just writing the memory to disk which when you're emulating old consoles that had like 128kb memory is trivial but on contemporaneous consoles it translates to a decent chunk of hard drive space per save
