PS4, even though that won't be for at least a year why because PC GAMING. It's interesting to see Microsoft's several months long backpeddling act. Now nu-Kinect doesn't need to be plugged in all the time! But MS aren't going to sell the XBone without it, so you'll still be paying $100 for something you'll never use!

slamming on the dubstep brakes (snoball), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

I actually kind of enjoyed my limited experience of the Kinect as a bauble, but in my old apartment I never had enough space for it so it wasn't something I ever considered getting myself, whereas now I could set up my new space pretty easily to accommodate it. And I have enjoyed a few Kinect games I've tried. Is it worth 100 bones? I suppose not.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

It was announced today that European XB1 pre-orderers are getting FIFA 14 at no extra cost. I suppose pack-in titles will appear pretty soon, lessening the $100 NSA tax.

I voted PS4 because I have vowed to never buy a Microsoft console. But it might be a few years until I pick one up.

I would vote PS4, but by the time I actually buckle down and get a new system (at least a year, likely years from now), who knows what things will look like...

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 August 2013 00:56 (ten years ago) link

PS4, I expect, but like so many others it won't be for a while. The 'launch window' listings don't hold much of interest to me, so I can see myself getting a Wii-U before I get a PS4/Xbox One. I really dislike the Kinect (more because of the fact it sits there looking in-the-way on my TV stand than anything else), and refuse to pay a premium for something I'll never use, which is why I'm veering more towards the PS4.

CraigG, Thursday, 22 August 2013 14:13 (ten years ago) link

Voted PS4 too based on what I'd pick if I had to pick today, but by the time I get around to buying one this could allllll chaaaaaange.

It's a race to A) whichever one has the nicest price drop B) whichever has most appealing exclusive backlog and C) which has the biggest pipeline of potentially interesting exclusives D) whichever actually delivers on the whole "making it easy to acutally play games" thing.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 August 2013 14:26 (ten years ago) link

My PS3 is an occasional bluray player/frequent ornament and my 360 is used daily but I still think PS4 looks like the better next gen option.

Best use of Kinect in game I've seen so far was the ability to shout at zombies to get their attention in Dead Rising 3.

i'll probably get a ps4, probably not until a year or two after it's released. i haven't had a PS console since PS1, so it'll be a nice change of pace. also co-sign on the useless kinect premium thing.

PS4 is $399/EUR399/£349
Xbone is $499/EUR499/£429

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 23 August 2013 09:51 (ten years ago) link

PS4 is US$399 in the US. European price is US$532.21. UK price is US$545.21.
XBoned is US$499 in the US. European price is US$666.86. UK price is US$670.36.

slamming on the dubstep brakes (snoball), Friday, 23 August 2013 09:59 (ten years ago) link

oh, so the PS4 will be less expensive than the Xbone ? I would have thought the other way around.
is one supposed to be technically better than the other at this point ? (sorry for the silly questions and for not digging out the info myself !)
maybe I should go by the PS in the US !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 23 August 2013 10:15 (ten years ago) link

PS4 has better specs, Xbone is more expensive because of mandatory Kinect2.0

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 23 August 2013 10:25 (ten years ago) link

OK, so no suprise (almost) everybody will get a PS4 then !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 23 August 2013 10:29 (ten years ago) link

in the first couple of years games will probably look v similar on both machines, PS4 might have better framerates. later on when programmers get more used to the tech PS4 games will start to look better. Xbone will probably sell well in the US & UK to people locked into Xbox Live via 360 who are used to gaming with their friends, the rest of the world looks pretty set to go PS4 though.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 23 August 2013 10:34 (ten years ago) link

isn't it suicidal from MS to have the Xbone 100$ more expensive than the PS4 ?
If I remember well, Sony had reduced the price of the PS3 so that it wasn't too much more expensive than the 360.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 30 September 2015 12:49 (eight years ago) link

there's really not much to choose between 'em at this point - xbox one is maybe better as an all-round media player, ps4 is still usually (marginally) better on resolution / framerates? i guess it comes down to which controller you prefer and which system has the more attractive exclusives.

I've never owned two consoles simultaneously, and I've never owned Playstation. I went with the Xbox One because that's the route most of my friends went. But I really really really want to play two PS4 exclusives, Until Dawn and Last of Us. Just not sure I want to invest 380 dollars for two games. There are no other Playstation exclusives I want to play. Decisions, decisions.

Xbox One at $300 next week, or PS4 at $350? Will Sony drop the PS4 price in response to the Xbox price drop (which is temporary but expected to go permanent shortly after)?

am0n, Friday, 18 March 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link

different is, PS4 doesn't need to pricedrop as it's actually selling

jamiesummerz, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

one deciding factor for me (i bought my PS4 late last year) was the general sense that most of my friends were gravitating toward PS4 and that it seems to have more momentum. that doesn't mean it's a better system, but it probably means you'll have more people to play multiplayer with (if that's a thing for you) and that there will be more system exclusives/games coming out for PS4 first, etc.

that's what I was just going to ask, if refurb is ok or not. reading online it seems pretty risky.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

I would avoid a refurb just because deals are/will be plentiful with the new/slim/upgraded consoles coming out. Though X1 has already seen massive cuts this year, PS4 deals will be coming soon enough. Not to mention VR...

Nhex, Friday, 8 July 2016 19:30 (seven years ago) link

Based on the research I did after my old PS3 went tits-up, if you do get a refurb, make sure that they have legitimately reballed the GPU and haven't just done a reflow. The difference being that the reflow just involves melting the existing solder and is much less reliable, whereas a reball involves completely replacing all of the solder points on the GPU. It's more involved and therefore more expensive but well worth it if you want something that's going to last. And from what I've read, a professional reball may very well improve on the work done in the factory.

Waking Up Is For Suckers (Old Lunch), Friday, 8 July 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

but there's no way to know what was done in refurbishing a specific console, right? i guess unless you have the knowledge to open it up and see for yourself.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, not without taking it apart. I guess if you buy it from a physical storefront, ask them to show you their (solder) balls. I doubt they'd have them if they don't use them.

Night Jorts (Old Lunch), Friday, 8 July 2016 22:46 (seven years ago) link

there have been new PS4 deals for around 250 recently, keep an eye on https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4Deals/

Yep it looked bad. Scorpio sounds great on paper - but what games will there be for it? Xbox exclusives lineup seems fairly week, and unless they have a ton of stuff in the works, I have a feeling
that people will upgrade and then wonder why... reason being that most third party developers are going to develop for both the PS and Xbox platforms at the same time, thats just how it works financially, so it seems like the only major advantage to Scorpio if it doesnt have major exclusives would be improved framerate and resolution on those cross-platform third party games - which is great of course... but why not just get a PC?

it seems like 6-7 years in the standard gap between Sony systems ('94, '00, '06, '13, '20). I agree one extra year would've been fine
