Game Dev Story: OWNS

Ride decided to give birth to a giant poop log & disguise it as a CD (jamescobo), Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Cut the Rope really is good.

JimD, Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:21 (thirteen years ago) link

it is OK but seriously, Game Dev Story is the most engrossing iPhone game I've played since 9 Innings. I played it for four and a half hours straight today.

JimD would love to play you in Carcossonne. My id is biznotic. Let me know yours and we will play.

Anyone playing Trainyard?

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 October 2010 04:42 (thirteen years ago) link

gave Game Dev Story a try. ridiculously addictive.

Mordy, Sunday, 17 October 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Playing trainyard but it hasn't clicked with me yet. Maybe once I get to the harder levels.

Ridiculously afraid to start game dev story.

Jeff, Sunday, 17 October 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

We should start a game dev story thread. Probably won't get a lot of time with it today because of football, but I can see it taking over my life.

Is there a reliable emulator program for iphone games yet?

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 17 October 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

so far my company's biggest seller is a historical trivia game for the Game Boy called "Nazi Peeholes"

am really liking soosiz! so cuet.

peter pears architecture (c sharp major), Sunday, 17 October 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

wow Game Story Dev is soooo addictive. So far my bestseller is a historical RPG for gameboy called "Gulag 2". My biggest bomb was a golf simulation called "Tiger's Sluts".

sofatruck, Sunday, 17 October 2010 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

the Fun of Game Story Dev is quite high. I think we should work on increasing its Fun even further

Mordy, Sunday, 17 October 2010 22:37 (thirteen years ago) link

is Game Story Dev basically Rockstar Ate My Hamster?

stet, Sunday, 17 October 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

ohh man just from the screenshots I can see how GDS would totally take over my life

must...not...click...buy

dayo, Monday, 18 October 2010 00:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Jesus, so addicting!

One question: how in the world do you switch someone's job to hardware engineer (you need at least one to build a console)? I've hired three separate people who have it listed as a skill, but when I use the job change item "hardware engineer" doesn't appear as an option…

Z S, Monday, 18 October 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Wait, just food the answer online: you have to level up someone to level 5 in everything - coder, writer, designer, sound eng., director and producer. Nice of them to explain that!

Z S, Monday, 18 October 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah. Once you've done level 5 in engineering you can switch them to hacker too. A crew of a few level 5 hackers are just dominant.

Mordy, Monday, 18 October 2010 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't deal with how awesome this game sounds. But seriously, whoever designed the levels for Peggle Nights should be out of a fucking job.

when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's annoying. (Stevie D), Monday, 18 October 2010 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

how that

george pimpton (s1ocki), Monday, 18 October 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

They are p awful and mostly gimmicky; there are too many blocks and not enough pegs and it seems like most of the time they were just all HEY LET'S MAKE THESE COOL PATTERNS LOOK!!! with little or no regard as to how the level would actually play.

Ok, whoever suggested Game Dev Story, GIVE ME MY LIFE BACK.

Jeff, Monday, 18 October 2010 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link

ANd holy shit is there anything more annoying than a blackout????

Jeff, Monday, 18 October 2010 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

no. no there is not!

Z S, Monday, 18 October 2010 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

it's like come on devs, you gotta click "save as" every once in a while so you don't lose half your work if something crazy happens, WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS BEFORE

Z S, Monday, 18 October 2010 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

How the fuck can I upgrade my data center???

Latest game is a Junior High simulation called, It gets worse.

Jeff, Monday, 18 October 2010 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

also god damn whichever evil genius decided to make the dev cycle almost exactly the same length of time as it takes me to smoke a cigarette

3 questions for youse guys:

1) I'm looking for something like the HotShots Golf! series and have trialed Let's Golf 2, is this the closest it gets? Seems very easy to master (I double eagled and holed-in-1).

2) I noticed someone big-upping 9 Innings but I trialed that and thought it was not as good as the goofier Baseball Superstars (I like not only arcade mode but player dev mode and manager modes). What am I missing with 9 Innings?

3) Is Katamari worth it?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

1. yes

2. the thing about 9 Innings is that it is perfectly designed to be playable at any moment in the day. baseball can be broken down into so many component parts which serve as gameplay milestones ("oh I'll just play one AB/inning/game/season/etc.") + brilliant virtual-d-pad-less portrait mode allowing for one-handed play (perfect for playing while standing on a bus/ducking out for a smoke/"oh man I just drew a platinum Albert Pujols" *frantic masturbation*) + controls streamlined to remove anything which isn't fun to control (fielding) while absolutely nailing everything else to within seven decimal places = a good excuse to play is never hard to find. then you get into building a team and then you get into card collecting and then all of a sudden it's seven AM three days later and you're still playing.

it is seriously my GOTY outright at this point. I must have played at least 20 hours of Baseball Superstars 2010 but 9 Innings is incomprehensibly great once you get into it.

3. no

Angry Birds released a Halloween version - 45 new levels...

schwantz, Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

just wanted to post that 9 Innings Lite is very rudimentary compared to 9 Innings, really impressed so far... I'm a little perplexed on what you need to do to complete substitutions (pitching/pinch hitters) but somehow I'm getting it down with random double taps.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

hit info to change players/pinch hit (you don't need to warm up pitchers in the pen)

dayo, Thursday, 21 October 2010 23:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i got that, but the actual selection and then confirmation of choice is kinda tricky (at least for me).

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 21 October 2010 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

(like i can get to the menu and choices but actually pulling the trigger on a selection is kinda clumsy FOR ME and my big thumbs)

You know when a game just gets is right with its basic mechanics? The right mix of precision, challenge and visual feedback? That's Reckless Racing, and it's probably the most satisfying weaponless top-down racing game I've come across. The really bad part is that the ipad version has got three more tracks exclusively, for now at least. I need those.

I'm at 132 stars and it's *kind* of getting hard but not really

sometimes you can see immediately what they are going for and it's like duh

dayo, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 10:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm stuck on ONE level at the very end that's driving me insane, and it looks like there are about 460-ish stars in the game, so y'all still got plenty to go

it does stay fairly simplistic until the very last few cities, but the harder puzzles do make up for that imo

should have mentioned that, like many people apparently, i got totally hooked on this game from the free express version (which has entirely different levels than the full game) and pretty much breezed through all the easy levels in the full game so it wasn't too long before i was up to the puzzles that were actually making me think

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

totally hooked. damn thing killed my battery

stet, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

ok, i trust u guys enough at this point that i'll drop 99 cents for a game -- hoping it takes over my life!
