Okay, kids, knowing full well that at least one ilxor runs a gaming podcast, which shows do you actually find worth hearing?

The New Jack Mormons! (kingfish), Thursday, 21 February 2013 07:18 (eleven years ago) link

Ones I currently make an effort to catch:

-Idle Thumbs
-Giant Bombcast
-Vidjagame Apocalypse (all ex--TalkRadar folks)
-RebelFM

And probably a few more I'm forgetting. I just found GI's, which is a nice companion show.

The shows have a similar format but I tend to like the personality mixes.

I listen to the one an ilxor runs, and, because I've followed it through all it's incarnations, Weekend Confirmed.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 February 2013 14:38 (eleven years ago) link

I think they stopped making the Eurogamer one? I used to like that.

My buddy made one called A Life Well Wasted that was pretty well regarded, but he stopped making episodes. He has a new one coming out next month though.

Sorry, just saw this pop up on SNA.
Indoor Kids is, or can be, pretty good. However you may take that with a grain of salt because I am not really a 'gamer'.
But at least check out the 2-part Dan Harmon episodes re: Skyrim. They're worth a listen.

bombcast is great. that's my fill of gaming related media right there tho. can't imagine listening to more--when am i gonna find time to actually play games????

adam, Thursday, 21 February 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

I listen to em while playing

The New Jack Mormons! (kingfish), Thursday, 21 February 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

i always feel bad turning down the music and stuff in games. someone worked hard on that! and what if it's awesome?

euro truck simulator has a built-in mp3 player function (the "radio") so spotify usage is allowed there.

adam, Thursday, 21 February 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

The bit in the newest Gameological podcast where his mother talks about Facebook games just made me laugh a lot. (I don't know which podcast is run by an ilxor so I feel a bit uncomfortable naming any of them in case it's that one). I don't even hate Major Nelson in truth, it needs to be an episode where they're covering games I actually care about but when it is, there are often plenty of interesting bits between the awkward PR monologues.

I took the plunge and became a paid subscriber to Giant Bomb, as their video chicanery I've found to be worth it.

Hadn't got around to trying ALWW yet but this has convinced me to get on with it - http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/03/a-life-well-wasted-work/

Dusting off this thread to recommend some gaming podcasts that I think are good.

First, the Insert Credit Show is back after a three-year hiatus. It's got that Tim Rogers on it! And it has a fun format that keeps the conversation interesting.

You probably already know about How Did This Get Played? but I'll rep it here anyway. Not just bad games, but "weird" ones, and I like that it allows them room to talk about stuff like Seaman and Getting Over It. Keep Games Weird, I say.

Dev Game Club is a show where two veteran devs play through a classic/influential title in a book club kind of format. It's fun to listen to a series while playing through the same game, as I recently did with Chrono Trigger. The hosts are a little dry, but full of insight.

The Short Game is a show about games that respect your time. Naturally, they cover a lot of indie titles.

I've been enjoying the Gaming Ride Home podcast. 15 minutes of game news per day. It's from an ex-Game Informer guy.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 18:29 (two years ago) link

:(

had fallen off listening in the last few years but still sad to see; must have spent thousands of hours listening to them. hope vinny is still on camera/audio wherever he goes, not sure anyone else has ever radiated such an earnest, kind, comforting presence on the internet.

devvvine, Tuesday, 4 May 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

Fuck's sake. I signed up shortly before Abby left and since then it seems everyone I signed up for has been leaving.

Is there some corporate fuckery behind this, or is it just happening naturally? Polygon seems to have a similar problem of losing its coolest contributors on the reg.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 08:58 (two years ago) link

They were already bleeding subscribers, and this probably won't help on that front. They haven't replaced anyone who has left with a new employee in quite some time.

Also, the new corp apparently didn't even know they existed when the CNET purchase went through.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:00 (two years ago) link

i'm guessing they had incentives that vested 6mo after the buyout which would be exactly right now. gerstmann might have longer since he's the head but i wouldn't be surprised to see him step down too after figuring out what to do with the site

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

Vinny said that it wasn't a six-month thing.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:13 (two years ago) link

Jeff's wife is pregnant so I think staying on healthcare is a major reason he's staying, plus protecting the jobs of those who are still there.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:17 (two years ago) link

ahh ok. still looks like a 'clash with new ownership' thing though when they all leave at once but i could also imagine it being a fatigue thing with those particular 3, they've been doing this for a long time

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:18 (two years ago) link

xp w/Polygon, I notice a bunch of them get promoted up to the bigger in-network sites like Verge

Nhex, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

I listen to Kotaku Splitscreen and Triple Click, they're not bad though I wouldn't necessarily go to the mat for them.

That was the case with Allegra, but I don't know anyone else? Karen Han left for Slate, Ashley Oh was just let go, Brian David Gilbert left to focus on personal projects. Polygon-adjacent Merrit K has vagueposted a bit on twitter abt the working environment not being great. Still gonna keep checking in as long as Pat and Simone are there.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 6 May 2021 10:50 (two years ago) link

You're probably right. I didn't realize how many had left (damn, even BDG!? I'm not even 100% a fan but still shocked)

Nhex, Thursday, 6 May 2021 14:59 (two years ago) link

Triple Click has been pretty good, not least because Jason Schreier (likely the only investigative journalist in gaming) is a regular.

What's the podcast version of photogenic? Because the hosts of Nextlander are not that. I don't always agree with Triple Click's opinions, but its hosts are much easier to listen to (even Jason Schreier!).

bain4z, Monday, 23 January 2023 20:29 (one year ago) link

i started writing a response here but forgot to finish it lol.

the only one i listen to other than insert credit is no cartridge, which is pretty great even though i don't play most of what they talk about. also they do a bunch of anime episodes which are good when i cherry-pick the ones i am most interested in.

I'm really enjoying the MinnMax Show (sic, because they're a bunch of Minnesotans/ Game Informer alums). They're mostly not capital-C Critics (except when Jacob Geller shows up) but they make up for it in wholesome amiabilty, and an extra bonus is that their rotating hosts features women nearly every week.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 04:48 (four months ago) link

I believe an ILX regular is part of the MinnMax crew.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 10:13 (four months ago) link

I enjoy the Duckfeed.tv podcasts - Watch Out For Fireballs, Bonfireside Chat etc, and soon they're going to be doing a Baldur's Gate 3 podcast called Real Lich Hours

I know who you mean and have kept an ear out but haven't heard him on the pod yet! Maybe he's on one of the shows they do because they have a YouTube channel too that I haven't dipped into yet.
