2009 was an odd and wonderful year for video games. There was a veritable flood of software for the 360 and PS3 as both systems came of age; the DS continued to reign but the iPhone has begun making headway as the portable system of choice; the Wii, ignored by the hardcore, offered some of the year's most critically acclaimed and financially disastrous titles; even PC gaming saw a blitz of high-profile exclusives and thousands of single-creator, overly-addictive casual flash games. While there was no clear and overwhelming GAME OF THE YEAR, few would argue that ’09 was not a very, very good year for gamers. Except maybe Mordy.
Coint and Plick offers a peek into the mind of a cross-section of Joe Average gamers; thirty-one guys (mostly) and gals from their teens into their forties who still enjoy a good orc rampage/brick busting/mecha flight/historical sim/plastic guitar concert. More than giving the reader a definitive "top ten", Coint and Plick is meant as opportunity for the busy gamer to acquaint him/herself with some potential missed highlights. After all, everything on here is SOMEONE'S game of the year, so everything must have something going for it.
The poll was taken in Pazz and Jop style vote/point format: all voters had 100 points to divide among any ten games released in 2009. The maximum number of points each entry could receive was no more than thirty. In the end, ninety-three games were nominated. Rather than just peel off the top half, I’ve opted to list everything that got a vote here, along with a few links, images and YouTubes of note. In case of a tie breaker, I went by number of people who voted for a game first and number of people who listed the game as their #1 of the year second.
Last year’s poll taxed ILX’s capacity to handle multiple images and media on one thread; with that in mind, I strongly suggest mods on this board log out to see the poll properly displayed. I’ll be starting a new thread for every twenty five or so entries and interlink the threads.
Bear in mind that not every voter used the full amount of points they had at their disposal, so the numbers don’t crunch exactly. In cases where a game was available on multiple systems, I listed only the systems that voters specified they played the game on. User comments for these games come from individual ballots as well as from past ILG posts; I’ve done a bit of editing to streamline but I’ve made every effort to maintain your meaning. My apologies if you feel misquoted; feel free to correct me on this thread.
I’ll be trying to list about roughly five entries per day over the next three weeks. So, to kick it off: here’s the low man on the totem pole.

"The game's promotional site presents visitors with a pair of animated assets to put one's ink on."http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/dirt2tattoo580.jpg
JeffLevine: Amazing graphics and a fun and unique feel to the racing and great online options, but not enough tracks and an annoying x-games atmosphere and buddy system that gets on one's nerves the more you play. The first Dirt had better tracks and I really missed the hill climbs, but this game has better racing.
Ste: I'm struggling with this so far; I have to put it on easy just so I can win some cash. There's certainly lots here, even if some of it is just silly add-ons like winning new dashboard toys and horn sounds. Control of the cars seems a bit too slippy, and sometimes I feel the connection between road and tires is lost. This isn't a problem with in-car view, of course. But hey: what's with the unskippable video clips and bollocks chatter?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REoUFG376rMhttp://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/dirt2-ng.03.lg.jpg

Gamasutra Audio Postmortem
Jjjusten: OK, let’s get this out of the way first: this game is stupid. Like idiotic, forehead- smacking, MST3K-level dumb. It's also so easy that there is little or no sense of accomplishment for the gamer at any point. Despite all this, it is howlingly (maybe intentionally?) hilarious. If all of 50's self-aggrandizing bullshit was this fun, I'd be buying that nasty-tasting vitamin water by the case just to fund another opportunity to play through the next glorious mess of a game he comes up with.

the tru hardcore are on the wii imo; what niche exclusives does the 360 have that are worth any cop? EDF and wartech senko no ronde? u cd argue for rez HD (not exclusive) or shadow complex (not niche). meanwhile the wii is basically an emulator for the niche reaches of the ps2 catalogue

'hardcore' is a bullshit moveable feast term which means different things to different people. these days for some reason a lot of people use it to mean DudeBro Gunz Gamer who buys the latest Hollywood aping epic for full price day one, finishes the 6 hour single player in one or two sittings and then plays the multiplayer maps for a few hours until its overrun with bots. and then does the same the next week when the next shiny thing comes along. I've been prepping! What I meant by "hardcore gamers" is serious hobbyists. "Hardcore" in my mind doesn't mean someone with a modded system or who imports or only plays MMO FPS stuff; I consider hardcore to refer to those who 1)are knowledgeable about the field and 2)who consistently put in ten plus hours of gaming a week. I think a lot of serious gamers have mostly written off the wii as anything but a retroware/gimmick console with a very few (madworld/new smb/metroid) exceptions. Just as a for instance: we received no votes for Little King's Story, which received universal online praise.

Ste - I meant to respond a long time ago to your slippy cars in Dirt 2 comment, because I think you're off the mark. The game feels pretty right to me (though arcade, right). You're driving on loose dirt most of the time, really fast, and it should be slippery - that's the whole point. For the tracks that have pavement sections, it's extra slippery, because you're driving on pavement with tires designed for being driven on dirt. Now, this kind of racing is not to everybodies taste, and that's fine, but the actual feel of it in game is pretty damn close to what it should be for a game called Dirt.

Zero Punctuation Review
Nhex: The best game in the world would be mixing the destructo enviro of this with GTAIV.
Accidental Symbolism in RF:G
Jjjusten: Tons and tons of fun for about the first four hours and then it gets really hard to give a shit anymore. Driving kind of sucks, third person combat kind of sucks, lots and lots and lots of sand to look at. Honestly, this and Prototype were vying for one of my last place spots, but I give the nod to Red Faction because of the building demolition, which is a funtime throwback to crash mode on whichever Burnout that was. Unfortunately, there is a meandering game surrounding the smash-it-up that you have to muddle through, but when you get there it is pretty great.
GM: I enjoyed Red Faction: Guerrilla over either Prototype or Infamous myself. Hammering a radio tower into oblivion on Mars may not be as purely awesome as elbow-dropping a tank from the top of the Empire State building, but at least you don't have to sit through increasingly humorless cartoons every ten minutes.

Forksclovetofu: Shitty sales rendered Muramasa a financial failure stateside and I share some of that blame. #77: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 – Wii – 5 pts – 1 vote Official Game Site
Jeff LeVine: I've never played real golf, so I was surprised on my first playthrough with MotionPlus (using Tiger play now) that I ended up at only +5 through eighteen holes. It's cool that the MotionPlus makes you do a real swing motion and I think that makes the game a lot more fun than the ps2 and 360 versions I'd played the hell out of years ago, but it's also still pretty fake and a lot less "sim" than I would have thought. You still swing on a fixed plane and no matter what you can't completely miss or even really flub the swing. Since I'd never even swung a real golf club in my life, I expected to do pretty awful with 1:1 controls but after a couple of minutes, using Tiger of course, I could tee off for monster 320 yard drives.
"I want to shed some light on why EA SPORTS has decided to continue with Tiger on the masthead of this game."
ZS: I'm quickly getting a lot better and shooting even par instead of 15 over. Part of the improvement may come from buying better clubs but a lot of it is probably because this time I'm not drunk while I'm playing.

Ste: The steering is the best I've ever felt in any racing game, very responsive. I’m not sure if this is just an in-car-view thing, as i usually play external view on other racing games. The external view on Shift is a bit crap but who cares when the cockpit view is so damn fun. I loved Grid, but Shift is tons better.

Yup, that's what I was thinking reading the latest bunch, didn't expect to see Forza 3 so low, and with only one vote. I mean, I've not played it and didn't vote but I thought it would be higher.
In other news I bought 50 Cent Blood on the Sand and think it deserved more than one vote. It handles a little clunky compared to others in the genre like Gears of War, but something about it feels solidly arcade-shooter, like when I used to play Devastators at the arcade as a kid. It's pretty good fun.
So far there are a couple of games I haven't even heard of (pixeljunk shooter, critter crunch, death smiles) that I'm interested to check out now too...

i think the thing neogaf does well (i know, i know) is present a thread with a ton of back information on games so you can see/read/hear everything about them before you take the plunge. I'm not saying we need to do a lot more of that, but a once a year taking-of-stock seems appropriate. As I said, more than an arbitrary THESE ARE _YOUR_ TOP TEN list, I like the idea of coint and plick as a 365 day signpost for a state of the hobby/art panorama. Constricting that in any way strikes me as not serving the final purpose. Also: aspies

i dig getting the one vote stuff! i mean theres a shit ton of stuff released every year and im willing to sift out stuff on the basis of one vote rather than by metacritic score

Fuck tha haters, Forks. It's good reading through all the stuff about games that (in many cases) didn't even occur to me. Plus, y'know, every vote means something. Also with it being split over a few threads, if you aren't interested in the 1-voters; wait for the next thread(s) before getting all butt hurt that we're not at the top ten yet.
