Inspired by all the jibber jabber on this thread, I returned to the original with the intention of playing some further in. Completed one mission of aimless shooting and then just played poker and liar's dice for a few hours. I think video games are no longer for me.

Maybe y’all already heard this nickname but the Greatest Generation guys were calling RDR2 “Jazz Horse” and I lol’d.

My problem with cigarettes in this game is that you only smoke them for like one second! I want to savor the damned thing

i found the meteor house. gross!

i found a cutesy little cabin with flowerbeds, marked on the map as "roadside brothel" or something. took me a bit to notice the dead body sitting on the porch.

most of the unique little ambient details i've run into so far involve corpses

goole, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:59 (five years ago) link

Well that’s environmental storytelling for ya! You got a skeleton and a toilet, now how do you arrange them

i'm gonna try to beat rdr2 today. i am alone stuck at home for the day so i have all the time in the world. i think i'm about to finish ch 6 but i've been saying that for an hour now.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 28 December 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

i'll be playing aaalllll day

Karl Malone, Friday, 28 December 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

finally beat it late last night. there's a lot to complain about but i managed to play some enormous number of hours, and i'm still riding around after the credits have rolled, hunting legendary animals. so i guess i enjoyed it!

is anyone else still playing? i'm not sure whether to jump into online or just not be a cowboy for a while.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 29 December 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

It doesn’t sound like fun and I’m not sure I’ll play it despite enjoying the first one. Nb that’s was the only rockstar game I ever enjoyed

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 29 December 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

I tried to play this at a friend's house and you had to pull off some street fighter II button combo bullshit just to eat a can of beans

LOL

calstars, Saturday, 29 December 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link

From all accounts this seems like an enormous time sink and there’s no way I could give the old timey west that much time. It would have to be blade runner 2814 or some shit for me to invest that much of my life

calstars, Saturday, 29 December 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

Today I met a rancher randomly and he started shooting at me when I wouldn't leave the area, so I killed him. Then I set his pigs free. Who then all proceeded to munch on his corpse.

glad i found an example of this, which is one of the most clever and poignant details i've seen in this game:

**RDR2 SPOILER ALERT** unbelievable how much detail @RockstarGames has put into Red Dead Redemption 2. First pic is Arthur’s journal entry, Second is John’s entry for the same encounter. Arthur being the more experienced journal writer, his drawing was naturally better. pic.twitter.com/Pw8k2u03zx

Do I lose much if I don't play the first game?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 22:14 (five years ago) link

imo no

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 22:17 (five years ago) link

yeah not really. i'm sure the narrative elements don't line up 100% anyway.

good kicker, though

as an aside, there's some juicy stuff about the pinkertons in the last (and amazing) david grann book, "killers of the flower moon"

i think this focus on "achievements" runs counter to marston's character. for instance i don't do any of the bounty hunts. what the fuck do i care? i'm basically a criminal myself. i just want to find william williamson.

you can read his discharge letter from the army. his name's not William!

so many of the systems of this game are so strange. found hats are not stolen hats are not crafted hats:

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 14 February 2019 06:48 (five years ago) link

I think this might be up there with Witcher 3 for me - just so cathartic and immersive.

On the other hand, I met my brother for a drink last week and he told me he got sexually assaulted in this game. I won't go into further detail but it was fairly graphic.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 14 February 2019 07:57 (five years ago) link

That happened to a friend of mine and he went back to see if it would happen again but the NPC isn't interested in you any more after the first time.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Thursday, 14 February 2019 09:27 (five years ago) link

Yeah my brother said he went back and killed the guy in some elaborate manner.

my wife got knocked out and picked up in a fireman's carry by some rando other player (presumably an 11 yo boy) but she pressed the Die button before they got wherever he was taking her. The Die button seems urgent and key.

with the polar vortex and feb snowfalls i've been quote-unquote working from home quite a bit the past month

also a lot of racism online, no surprise: https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/15/18183843/red-dead-online-black-character-racism

after dipping my toe in the water in both GTA online and RDR online, i have learned my lesson and will never participate in a rockstar game's online mode ever again.

is this ever coming out on PC :(

global tetrahedron, Friday, 26 April 2019 21:15 (four years ago) link

probably

gta 5 had a 18 month lag from console to pc for what thats worth as precedent

RDR2 coming to PC, nov/dec <3

do not get this for PC

hey being a cowboy isn’t about asking questions like that, it’s about following orders

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 15 November 2019 04:01 (four years ago) link

or maybe the opposite, i dunno i never finished the game

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 15 November 2019 04:02 (four years ago) link

yeah heard the PC release was all hosed up.

i never finished it either. it's a stunningly gorgeous game, but man does it go on forever. i'd guess i probably have only ~5 hours left but it could be 25.

circa1916, Friday, 15 November 2019 13:14 (four years ago) link

half of people couldn't even get the game to launch, many others (including me) had stutters and crashes that were seemingly unrelated to hardware capacity- like even those with top of the line machines had them. unplayable. i guess this is the curse of easy patching, not super surprising but just a horribly done port

global tetrahedron, Friday, 15 November 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link

Ah well that answers that then

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

the game itself is gorgeous but the plot just repeats itself. 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong) 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong) 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong)
