i ask because i was trying to locate my copy for a friend and i had to stop for just one quick go

also i was trying to remember if this game was actually fun (like, in any way) before you got good at it, but i guess that's a bit backwards: the whole point of the accelerating difficulty is that you end up learning how to get good at it at the right sort of rate

I spent one summer depressed, living with three female roommates who were also depressed. None of us knew we were depressed? Maybe we weren't, maybe it was just very hot or the air in the house was bad. I'd play Tetris 64 in the evening for two hour stretches-- one game, I was good, and that version of Tetris was forgiving-- the girls would just sit and watch. In September we all moved out, haven't seen any of them since.

I got Tetris for the Gameboy DS and I'd play wirelessly in the car against my best girl friend, and she'd consistently beat the pants off me and one time I got so frustrated by losing all the time that I thought about throwing the Gameboy out the window, kicking her out of the van, running into the woods screaming, etc.

Later, I downloaded Tetris for the Wii and started playing online and winning a lot. Second evening, bf came in and said "whatever, you're probably playing against 7-year olds". I haven't played since.

original gameboy tetris quite a bit harder, i think my best there was something like 210 lines. can't remember what that was pointswise, but it came mostly from full four-line tetrises. that's just how i roll.

three weeks pass...

I got 221 lines this morning in a game of iPhone Tetris. But, it was a game continued on from the previous evening, where I'd got it up to 100 lines and paused. (Not paused because I'd got to 100 lines, but paused because... well, I only ever play it on the toilet, frankly, and I'd finished.)

Previous high score was about 190ish iirc. Usually get 160-180.

Friends have suggested that my 221 score is cheating, because of the 12hr pause.

Are they right?

I'm amazed I've never posted to this thread for some braggin, but at one point about 3 years ago my highest points score (no idea what it was in number of lines) on the original Gameboy Tetris was good enough for, I think, 4th or 5th place in the Twin Galaxies leaderboards. But I didn't have a way to film my Gameboy , so never bothered doing anything about it. I see the top score on there is now over 690K, which is just baffling.

Saw this doc last night. Great fun for anyone who used to play a lot of tetrism (the contest itself was around 45 mins of the movie?) but I can imagine that f9or anyone else it might be a bit dull. ]

I thought I was pretty handy at tetris back in the day, but Ive no idea what my score would be now. I need to get a NES emulator and see just how good I am. I never played Tetris on the NES, but L19 didn't look particularly daunting to me.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

Good score! By comparison, I just got ~220k from 192 lines. It was basically a clean-up battle from start to finish. If you start at level 9, you should (in a perfect world) be able to reach 300K by the time it levels up to 10 at 100 lines, as you get ~12K per 4-line thingy. Pretty unlikely of course...

You guys have seen the amazing Not Tetris 2? It's really pretty funny.

Not Tetris 2 is the spiritual successor of the classic Tetris mixed with physics. The result is a fun spinoff in which blocks are no longer bound to the usual grid. Blocks can be rotated and placed at any angle, resulting in a complete mess if not careful.

I was never very good at the high speed/level 20 game where the challenge is basically to finish at all. The online version plays at level 5 or 6 so the whole challenge is comboing your opponent and not getting wrecked by theirs. It's a ranked system and once you get to a certain level your opponents essentially make no mistakes and play faster than I do so there's nothing to exploit, you either get lucky with your combos or you lose. And yes I am aware that most of these people are 13 year olds :(

i went out on a date with a 21-year-old (yeah once i found out she was 21 that was the end of that) a couple weeks ago who's super into the tetris speedrunning community. retro gaming in particular seems to hold a strong appeal for young speedrunners, especially the queer autistic ones.

I almost wonder if the teenage years are the physical peak for speedrunners, like once you hit 20 maybe you can't move your fingers like that, I dunno. I thought about this playing one of the new Mario Party games which re-used a bunch of old minigames and there are some button mashers where I was like, hmmmm I used to be a lot better that this

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:49 (three months ago) link

I think it's more that when you're a teen you can prioritize speedrunning goals as the most important thing in your life - you can dedicate yourself to hobbies like that because you have the literal time and because you have that youthful passion that drives you in those years. But yes definitely helps to have those quick youthful reflexes!
