Eliminator is fucking MAGIC.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Sunday, 26 July 2009 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I've read in reviews that it has a new single-player campaign- does that replace the original, or is it available alongside it (select original flavory vs Fury when you hit campaign, or whatever)?

Telephone thing, Sunday, 26 July 2009 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

it continues the story.

julien schNAGL (s1ocki), Sunday, 26 July 2009 23:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Telephone - exactly, when you hit campaign it gives you the choice to play fury or the original

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 27 July 2009 00:07 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, that's what I wanted to hear- I'm about halfway through the original campaign and I wanted to make sure adding Fury wouldn't wipe out my progress or anything.

Telephone thing, Monday, 27 July 2009 03:48 (fourteen years ago) link

So yeah, Fury is awesome. Still a bit iffy on Zone Battle, but the other modes are fantastic, the new tracks are great (with one exception- I forget the name, but there's one track where most of the ground is the same color as boost pads, argh), and the presence of brand-new models and skins for every single ship is a nice bonus.

And Detonator is the best way to rack up loyalty points so far- even my first mediocre attempt netted me over 900.

I'm bummmed they've added in advertisements during some loading (for online and even offline races)

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 1 August 2009 19:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I keep getting State Farm- especially annoying once you realize that the loading screens are probably artificially extended to ensure you don't miss any of the commercial.

why is this??

you guys are getting commercials?

http://tinyurl.com/npaahw (s1ocki), Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

why is this??

It just gives way, way more loyalty for a minimal time investment than running speed laps or doing zones.

On a side note, what's up with all the new Fury models for ships having higher stats than their regular HD counterparts?

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Sunday, 2 August 2009 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

no i noticed that too, i just wonder why?

Couple of articles about the in-game ads here:

Glad it's pulled - sure hope it doesn't come back. The loading wasn't so much the problem, just having to see the same fucking State Farm ad over an over again definitely was aggravating. It was ruining the pure aesthetic pleasure that is Wipeout HD. It makes sense they want to monetize that stuff, but you can't do it in a way that disrupts the game experience & makes the game uglier & and annoys the viewer. Hell, I'd rather pay a reasonable subscription fee.

I only installed the Fury pack a few days ago after this thread got revived, and I haven't seen any adverts. Is it just an American regional thing? This is a totally gorgeous looking game and I can imagine how adverts might spoil that.

i already paid for the effing game!

SBed à part (s1ocki), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 18:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Sure - Ideally there'd by no ads in stuff we pay for, but real life just don't work like that. I pay for TV and I get ads. I pay to see a movie and they show ads before the film. I bought Left4Dead and they have ads during loading. I bought Burnout Paradise and there are ads on the billboards (same with some previous Wipeout games). Etc. There's a semi-tasteful way to do it and a garish way...

Nhex, Sunday, 8 November 2009 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

If anybody is interested I'll be trying to host some public, low speed (venom class) races, starting in about twenty minutes and going for as long as I or my ps3 can stand it (at least for several hours, maybe longer). I'll be cycling through all the tracks.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I was happy with one 1st place finish! First time I'd ever played online, was fun.

nate woolls, Monday, 9 November 2009 14:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, thanks for stopping in. Wipeout is really one of the best (most fun) online racers. Most people playing are pretty good, but not the bunch of whiny freaks you find in just about every other racing game (except Mario Kart), maybe because nobody uses voice chat (or do I just have it turned off on my system(?), I can't remember). Even with all its weird power-ups, it's very balanced. Even at low speed, it's very fast. Works great with the create your own playlist feature too.

I'll try to run another game in two weeks, but earlier in the day so more people can maybe get in. Will probably set it to flash class for some variety.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Nice, I'd love to do that. I bought Fury and have yet to even race on most of the tracks, so I'll have time to get my training on.

nate woolls, Monday, 9 November 2009 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I want to get a little better at it before I start playing online. I am much better at the trials than the races, as I haven't really figured out how to use weapons well.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 9 November 2009 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

My current weapon pick-up theory...

Speed boost - use on straght-aways, right before hitting other speed pads if possible (most useful pickup in the game)
Bombs - Drop over speed pads
Mines - Drop over speed pads, or around a corner where they can't be easily avoided
Quake - most powerful pickup in the game, use whenever you aren't in first
Autopilot - usually I'll just absorb it, but some tracks, maybe there's a tricky part you hate, and autopilot can get you through them pretty fast

Everything else - absorb to replenish energy, or if you're fine on energy, feel free to shoot 'em off, but most of the time they're fairly useless

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty much OTM, I usually fire most of them off immediately in case I get one of the useful powerups, particularly if I'm tailing someone

the machine gun one and the triple-rocket are useful if you're in a tight crowd of racers - can buy you a few seconds' lead

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Monday, 9 November 2009 20:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm always a little more worried about myself - I just mostly try to drive well & not worry too much about other people and keep my health up, so I tend to ignore most of the offensive weapons. I do think it's a good idea to get rid of stuff quick though, in hope of an extra speed boost.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i.e. knowing the tracks, racing as close to perfect laps as possible, hitting as many speed pads as possible and doing barrel rolls at the right times are all much more important than any pick-ups if you want to place high or win races consistently.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:44 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i usually know if there's another pick-up coming along tho and discard if there is

so regarding the music in Wipeout HD Fury, can I just...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejOm1V0Qpvk

my god I love this track way more than I probably should; the moment where everything breaks down and it flips over from 4/4 to 6/8 is fucking BRUTAL and AWESOME and really the only thing that makes it better is the brief stomping 2/4 bit right before everything pulls back into tightly wound control

a Barbie-like nub where he provates should be (HI DERE), Monday, 16 November 2009 19:31 (fourteen years ago) link

and actually, in keeping with the general "Noisia is awesome" vibe:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVpm9aFMiYc

so fucking choice, the bass thuds in this mixed in with the various chirpy synth riffs and the stutterstep syncopation all dosed with a healthy level of distortion

I am often a very simple man when it comes to music like this; all I want is a swaggering, testosterone-laden brawler of a tune that makes me want to punch you in the face. Kudos to both of these for being exactly that.

tbh the only soundtrack I've put together that's come close to matching the original soundtrack is sticking the entirety of Silent Shout on my PS3; there is something eerily awesome about racing to ambient half of "The Captain" and both "We Share Our Mother's Health" and "Like A Pen" sound like they could mesh almost seamlessly with the tracks included on the original soundtracks

There's something pretty great about future-racing to Slick Rick.
