Tabletop wargames

It's called "I Love Games" and not "I Love Video Games" so I figured I'd cast this line. Anyone play any tabletop war games? I'm personally incredibly addicted to Privateer Press' Warmachine, and I'm looking into Confrontation and Flames of War as well.

If you're interested in the tabletop thing, play that WM stuff. Giant steam-powered robots punching each other in the face.

I hope this doesn't end up on that lonely "Unanswered Questions" list.

This board was founded so that all games could be included.

i work in 'the industry', therefore i despise them.
ps this does not mean i work for Games Workshop k thx.

I've always wanted to try but christ, it looks like so much work before you even get started. That and it involves maths at which I am shit :(

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:41 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not that much work, if you play with friends. Each pick up a starter box of whichever game, a rulebook twain the two of you, and glue the little mans together. Then muck through the rulebook together.

I haven't heard of these. Are they like those "Decision At Vicksburg" hex grognard games? I've always wanted to try one of those, even though I'm sure I'd be absolutely terrible at them.

Tonight I will be playing Commands & Colors: Ancients, which will pit Hannibal vs Scipio at the Battle of Zama.

I used to play uber-complicated counter and hex wargames (Third Reich etc) but my brain can no longer deal.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost not meaning anything by this it's a comment on my friends but the odds of me getting them interested in something like this would be slim to none.

I love the look of them though. Pity I can't get something together but I'd say the time committed to each game is horrendous!

tabletop wargames?

the kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sorry, the kit!. I didn't mean to ruin your day(s). I'd talk about how I also like Unknown Armies and Exalted but with my luck, somebody works in the P&P RPG industry as well.

Will M. (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I love Unknown Armies!

i dig p&p RPGs.

That's what we need. an ILX UA game. As an outsider I have serious reason to believe that these boards are some secret arcane meeting place of some underground arcane cabal or something. X0rmancers?

Will M. (Will M.), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

i never heard of UA though. i was more a fantasy RPGer.

the kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:55 (eighteen years ago) link

G-kit and I have been idly threatening eachother with a pen and paper RPG FAP for a while now. I say we should all do it.

pen and paper rpg's ruled my teenage years for a while, i never could get into the tabletop wargame though, especially since most of my attempts to come to grips with them were with warhammer 40,000, a truly diabolical creation. Blood bowl was fun though.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I endorse rpgfap utterly. I would try and make it, even. Who would GM?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 March 2006 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

It'd depend on the game, but I'd be in.

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Blood bowl was fun though.

I never really "got" Games Workshop, but Blood Bowl was so good!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

GW actually had some very nice games but they were never the main events. Battlefleet Gothic was buckets of fun. I also enjoyed Necromunda, Blood Bowl and Mordheim. But WHFB/WH40K were exercises in how NOT to make a minis game. Unbalanced, wonky rules, composition-based instead of tactics-based (some armies just _won_), some pretty uninspired armies... bleh. Bad times. Warmachine is much better.

Thinking of diving into a heavy solo-player wargame - currently looking at Peloponnesian War and Navajo Wars from GMT as well as Field Commander: Alexander. Not very interested in WWI/WWII, US revolutionary wars, US civil war, vietnam, or anything at all modern honestly?

ian, Monday, 25 January 2021 23:44 (three years ago) link

i ordered Pelonponnesian War (2019 version) and Navajo Wars (which i know some ppl say is not really a wargame, whatever), just keeping you all updated. and to reach the free shipping on noble knight games i also ordered a call of cthulhu scenario book and trail of cthulhu "bookhounds of london" which i will probably use with the CoC rules.

I have just ordered the new Blood Bowl. Played a lot as a teenager. I also got Space Hulk about four years ago, which I always loved. Big scale Warhammer is ‘orrible, but I love the RPG and small scale games.

I have painted like one orc and half a referee from that set last winter then got distracted by something else, but it was a lot of fun. I have many happy memories of stupid things happening in Blood Bowl as a teenager

Been back painting Marvel Crisis Protocol stuff recently, slightly larger scale, everything is bright red/blue/yellow, just good clean mischief

Did a solo half of Blood Bowl tonight (isolating - wife and daughter have mild Covid) to refamiliarise with the rules. Stupidly good fun even on my own. Wood elves beat black orcs 1-0 on touchdowns, but lost 2-0 on casualties...

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:05 (two years ago) link

The PC/console game of Blood Bowl 2 is good for learning the rules and often on sale if you have anything to play it on, though not much more than that as the AI is ludicrously stupid

Massive Blood Bowl fan from 89-92 with the styrofoam pitch. Played mostly Norse (Humans/Dwarves with berzerkers).

Greatest game was against my friend's skaven/werewolves team. Tied 2-2 (playing to 3) I had eliminated every player on his team but two, so I thought I was in firm control. He somehow got the ball deep in his own end and as I was about to swarm him he managed (lucky roll) to kick the ball to his only other player who had leaked out of the scrum. All alone, his ball carrier was two squares shy of the end zone and needed to roll anything but a 6 for each square to sprint into the end zone and win. First roll was not a 6. Second roll was a 6, meaning the ball carrier injured himself, was eliminated, and fumbled the ball. I crushed his last player and that was that.

We have established an actual in-person Blood Bowl league amongst eight mutual friends. It is way fun.

I've been having fun learning the Men Of Iron series games, so I bought a cheap copy of an old edition of SPQR. I wish there was someone to help me learn, otherwise I'm just staring at piles of chits thinking myself in circles and slowly losing my mind.

So I picked up a couple Star Wars Legion sets because I just wanted some Hoth dudes and snowtroopers to paint. Now I need to check out an actual game.

Our Blood Bowl league is still running, and up to 9-11 players per season. Just started season five. Split between tabletop and Fumbbl, an online version that uses Java and manages to recreate the feel of playing tabletop amazingly well. Last season we managed 20 games each plus playoffs, which I’m really happy about. Agility teams forever!

Have still only played SW: Legion once, even having many more minis painted and can problem play a proper game now

Played Space Hulk versus my daughter yesterday after showing her the rules the other night. She won.
