Yoshi's Island is FANtastic. I've only played the SNES version, so I don't know how good the port is, but the SNES one is totally great.

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 7 October 2005 03:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I just played it tonight and now wonder how I ever did not play it before. I immediately regretted not buying it when it came out, so I pretended that it was 1995 and I was still entralled by Super Mario World and genuinely sat there thinking, "Hey, awesome graphics."

> who has played through SMW2: yoshi's island?

i got to the end of yoshi's island and was going through it again trying to get 100% when my brother a) overwrote my saved game and then b) gave the console away to one of his friends.

great unfinished look to the graphics. crayoned and denim patchwork and stuff.

why is this game so good?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 06:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I had more trouble with the one where you had to eat the green berries. Tubular I got through all right.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 28 March 2008 07:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I still only have 95 exits though. Fifteen fucking years and I can't get 96????

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 28 March 2008 07:11 (sixteen years ago) link

fuck tubular, i'm having trouble w/ donut plains 1

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 07:42 (sixteen years ago) link

this game is IMPOSSIBLE

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 07:43 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe my favourite game of all time. total perfection.

s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Yoshi's Island is like a million times harder than Super Mario World. I love the latter, but if you play it for like 8 hours straight, you end up with 65 extra lives early on and then it's like playing with game genie. Whereas Yoshi's Island introduces the possibility of the game over screen about halfway through.

Z S, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

it's true. but it's so fucking frustrating to just get killed over and over again by the first enemy!

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, what is wrong with you???

Jordan, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Good move making this available for Gameboy! God I love this game.

nickalicious, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i dunno. i just keep getting killed by flying turtles on donut plains 1.

i'm used to getting killed by attrition (metroid, castlevania, doom) or by some sort spectacular fuck-up (halo, star control, syndicate, etc)

maybe the key factor is that i'm playing w/ the keyboard, on a powerbook?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago) link

There is one board in level 6 where you have to like go through certain places in a certain order that I always, always fuck up.

nickalicious, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

the other day i was thinking about playing through this again, and then i remembered that ghost house where you have to go through all these certain places in a certain order or else you just loop until time runs out, and i was like "eh, too much work."

Jordan, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:23 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry, this game is HARD

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 March 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

keyboard thing might be a huge factor in that dude.

s1ocki, Saturday, 29 March 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe i go bujy a usb control

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 29 March 2008 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Fat kid called Cha in my street got a Super Nintendo with this for his First Communion. I was round at his house more often than mine for the next month.

Plus yes, USB controller is needed.

jim, Saturday, 29 March 2008 02:12 (sixteen years ago) link

got playstation-style USB controller for $20.

happy to note super mario world IS much easier, particularly controlling the gliding cape. i think a major difference is that it feels much more natural to let go of the d-pad (ie "neutral" direction) than it feels to take your hand off the arrow keys. still f'n hard, though!!

I think I've beaten it once... was the trick judicious use of the yoshi that can fly when it's got a shell in it's mouth?

reporting for duty

you're not douche bags, but you are cry baby no skills, it's undeniable. Keep honin' your skillz at Butter Bridge 2, we who are 1337 will be trouncing Tubular without even thinking about it too much.

beat "tubular" today on my second to last life before we'd agreed we were gonna turn the game off. no yoshis no capes no gimmicks, just super tight maneuvering. this game is a shade too easy 90% of the time, but when it decides to get hard, it's fair-hard, satisfying-hard.

got the scuba tube blowin' like a snork (Doctor Casino), Monday, 10 September 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

a few months ago I was hanging out w/ a buddy who had the SNES Classic and we decided to give this a go. it was harder than I remembered! then again when I was 11 I had no issue with it so the problem is probably with me. maybe I'm too used to the New Super Mario Bros. games which are more forgiving. btw if you didn't know the New SMB game has a "World 9" which is full of super difficult levels like this...I eventually beat them all but it was a slog. "Tubular" is probably more difficult than any of those though.

frogbs, Monday, 10 September 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

the one thing that surprised me about "tubular" is how short it is, versus what you'd expect for some like, brain-busting super-challenge level created by fans using hacks or the new mario maker or whatever. there's not even a halfway market!
