hella fun; I'm at chapter 7 and cruising through. I named the father Obama and the mother Oprah, which has led to all manner of lolz.

Avoiding spoilers at all costs... Got through Chapter 1, this is great so far. BUT.

I cannot get the damn musical timing down at all. This is very possibly due to the emulator I'm using, and my options are quite limited on Mac - is this game still playable without being able to do the huge multihit combos? I can't ever do more than 2.

i never really got the hang of it & finished the game with no problems at all. just forget its there.

holy shit my flash cart just showed up and I can finally play this fucking thing! oh man too many great games to play right now.

I definitely feel like I have to grind a little more than I should because of it, but it's livable, especially compared to the frustration of Earthbound's encounters. Still enjoying every minute of this.

On a random whim I decided to buy the Mother 3 Guidebook after looking at all of the pretty typography on the site where they sell it. It's a fucking amazing package for something made by a bunch of eccentric fans!

I can't do the timing thing either. It's not a big deal.

I have been saving the last bit for later.

I got real good at the timing stuff.

Beat it. So good. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it, but instead I'll link to this excellent 8-part series of insightful articles at Cruise Elroy.

Spoilers of course - also for these funny comics.

I need to finish it...I think I'm at least 85% done with it. I always do this with a game I really love...put off finishing it bcz it is so sad to say goodbye.

A couple of blog posts on how they used the town as a central location and how the characters were there mostly so you could observe them and get invested in them, as opposed to the typical RPG NPC item/quest dispensers.

finally playing this now and it's just omg. also everyone told me the music was good but god DAMN this music is REALLY good. I've been playing it w/ my lol hueg monitors plugged into my micro; it feels almost insurmountably nerdy but then the music is just ARGH SO GOOD.

Ha, as usual, I had about 2 hours left after months of letting it hibernate.

I'm on holiday in New Zealand and put mother3 on my M3 so I could play it on (at least some part of) the ridiculous 33 hour journey. All the DS says is that the sd card isn't reconised. :( so sad, now I'll have to play it again when I get home.

CraigG, Friday, 21 August 2009 07:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Could somebody point me to a webpage that shows exactly what I need to play this game?

You need a Nintendo DS
Some wily internet knowledge
GBA Flashcard: http://www.gameboy-advance.net/nintendo_ds/nds_flash_card.htm

well, you don't need a DS or flashcard if you're fine with playing it on your computer.

I played it through on the computer and loved it, but if you do have the option or wherewithal to get it done on an actual portable I would do it, because the whole musical timing element is completely screwed in emulation. You can get through the game regardless but I imagine it's less fun, the battles are more frustrating when you can't do the attack tapping.

Nhex, Sunday, 23 August 2009 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I did not know that (only played the first little bit). Maybe it depends on the emulator you use too, maybe some are better than others?

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 23 August 2009 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

That's definitely possible, but I'm sure the emulation will never 100% match the original hardware cycle-for-cycle. 99% of games you don't need to be accurate down to milliseconds but for this (and I imagine the original Rhythm Heaven), even when your emulator fluctuates from 99% to 100% clock speed, it's enough to completely blow this. Like I said you can still get through battles but it's definitely more grindy than the game intends. For Mother 3, you won't even notice this problem until 3 or 4 chapters in when the battles get significantly harder.

Nhex, Sunday, 23 August 2009 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess Itoi was inspired in making this by a trilogy of novels called The Notebook/The Proof/The Third Lie. I'm reading them right now, and so far: very good, but intensely disturbing. Way more so than anything in Mother 3.

I started playing this through again. I forgot this game's crazy coincidence!

There is a wife & husband couple called Abbey & Abbot in this game

which are both misspelled versions of things I have been called, my name and my "name"

IRL (Abb13) and on the onlnie (Abbott)

I guess Itoi was inspired in making this by a trilogy of novels called The Notebook/The Proof/The Third Lie.

This trilogy is very, very good, by the way – I read half of it last summer, and I reread the whole thing last week. I wish I knew anyone else (online or IRL) who has read this so I could compare mind meltedness notes. It feels kind of lonely having something so good to myself!
