Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2

I bought this for 10 euro at Christmas and have been getting kind of addicted, mostly cos I am trying stubbornly to make my character turn into a Sith.

It has reams and reams and reams of boring dialogue about the socio-political history of the galaxy etc but it's weirdly compelling, a pretty good RPG, and it feels quite free in terms of choice.

I also like the way that as your character turns dark your cohorts all become snivelling annoying cranks aswell.

Anyone else played it? I'm not sure if I'll just stop playing this as soon as I manage to create my lightsabre but anyhow.

This game is outstanding!

The game is great. It's ultimately unfinished, but great.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

It's ridiculously easy to make your guy a Sith! I just finished the first set of missions, and my character (a female PHWOAR) has already pissed off the Han Solo stand-in, the blind Jedi, AND a robot! I'm about a third of the way towards EVIL - no pale skin & veins yet, tho. (I'm taking a break from the game - I finished the Light Side campaign a few weeks ago, and it's too soon for me to return & do most of the same stuff again.)

Yeah, the sociopolitical stuff seems boring @ first, but I loved listening to it. The balance between & timing of Stuff Happening and Expositional Cooldowns was impeccible.

And it's all about dual lightsabre action. Also lightsabre THROWING action.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link

it's easy to get to the dark side but it keeps stubbornly giving me light side points for times where I just think the darkside guy deserves to die too, for being an asshole.

I've pissed off all the characters too, mostly by killing the innocent.

how do you actually create a lightsabre? or when do you first get one? I have just finished the mission in the caves on Dantooine and got my force crystal and stuff, I just want to make sure if I can have a sabre right now I am not missing out.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

This game locks up my PC every 10 minutes, but I still managed to play through it twice.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I think once you get the force crystals & stuff, that softspoken handiman guy w/ the floating orb will say he can help you construct a lightsabre once you collect (or make) a few more components.

This game locks up my PC every 10 minutes, but I still managed to play through it twice.

i had this same problem, but updated my drivers(video, audio, mobo) and it worked itself out.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah he said that to me, but he hasn't come good yet. I hate him.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, wait - I think you need to go to another planet, finish stuff up there & THEN you'll get your lightsabre (bwah hah hah).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh wait I got it! A nice double sided light sabre. I got it after helping that planet defend itself against the mercenaries. It's odd, for the first part of the game, fighting was hard and I would regularly get killed, but now it's like I've hit a point where all my characters are too good. And I just electrocute people to death constantly, and win every battle in 10 seconds.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought this cheap for the pc last week. It's having to take a distant third to Civ 4 and San Andreas at the minute. It seems good but it doesn't have the pulling power of those two.

Greig (treefell), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm disappointed that I was never able to take on all the handmaidens at once. I played thru it 1.5x, getting distracted away the second time while goign thru the game as Sith(same thing happened with #1).

If nothing else, I always thought that the games proved that they could do a KOTOR tv series if they chose. It seems like you could put out a compelling SW narrative that doesn't necessarily involve Darth Vader.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I've totally gone back to being good again, but without trying to be good, I'm right in the middle, grrr. time to kill some civilians.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:38 (fifteen years ago) link

How'd you manage that? Yeah, just terrorize random folks, make snide comments to goodie-goody party members, and always always kill when the opportunity presents itself.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh yeah I love the killing.

See the problem is sometimes I actually dislike the evil person and want to rail against them. I think I should have helped the mercenaries to take over Dantooine.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Totally! Dude, you're EVIL! Even if your allies are total douchewits, you have to stay the course! Good (or bad) intentions aren't enough to turn your character portrait red & smoky.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

(I don't know if I have the stomach to be a Sith, Ronan, so I'm rooting you on.)

this game was so amazing. are there KOTOR on the 360? new ones?

at the end of KOTOR2 I was so evil and so fucking stubborn that the game ending was the entire universe was the best end to a game ever, it gave me about 12 chances not to let that happen.

ok, I'm playing KOTOR1 right now - didnt read the thread cuz i dont want either of the games spoiled for me, but this is AMAZING. i'm going darkside for my first playthrough (which i'm realizing may have been a mistake), and i just got to the part where i actually switched sides. i forced the Wookiee to murder Mission - easily the sickest (as in most grotesque) gaming moment i've ever experienced. this game is bananas!!!!!!!!!

I loved KOTOR and own 2 also, but enough people told me 2 was badly broken that I've never played it. Is that nonsense? I've no shortage of games to play, so if 2 kinda sucks then I'll continue to stay away.

I love these games a lot even though I never even scratched the surface re: companion influence; none of my characters ever became Jedi.

I've heard from a friend that the ending is so badly executed that the entire game is not worth playing. I hope that's wrong, b/c I'd love to try it some time.

Sugar Slam (Euler), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

1 owns pretty hard, it's a pretty smart game, reminds me a lil of deus ex... not so much in the gameplay unfortunately, but writing-wise (deus ex is infinitely superior just as an RPG, nevermind the whole host of other things it does amazingly well). i like the way the star wars galaxy is basically depicted as a giant third world shithole filled with brutality and exploitation. it's very obviously meant to parallel real world environments like, say, colombia where violence scars the lives of everyday ppl, and in a way that seems much more specific and intentional than in most games featuring generic corrupt/wartorn shithole [x]

things that make u say ~*~*hmmmm*~*~

the last boss is a real son of a bitch if you dont have exactly the right build though... i had like the worst possible combination of skills and feats for that fight (low treat wounds, low force resistance, completely wrong set of force powers, etc)

playin KOTOR 2 now - boy do i hate how this starts! the characters are horrible and right off the bat you have to slog through this gigantic dungeon that's bigger than any from the first game. the influence system seems interesting tho...

not really diggin KOTOR 2 btw - it just feels kinda cheap and crappy compared to the first game

a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

-the level design is awful - all samey cramped corridors no matter what the locale (except dantooine thusfar, and it's literally just the same environment from the first game with a lil gussying up)
-the characters are borrrring and unlikeable (so far none of them own as hard as Jolee or Canderous)
-it's pretty buggy and incomplete

the whole thing feels like half-a-game, like something the publishers rushed out the door to meet an arbitrary deadline (which is probably exactly what happened)

a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

KOTOR 2 is totally a rush job - publisher wanted it out regardless. Just wait until you get to the end! However, I think the character interaction is better, though the character's themselves aren't as interesting.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:24 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, the influence stuff is neat. if the first game had this system, it would've owned

I'm super excited about this, never got round to starting it (despite owning it for years and LOVING the first game) just because talk of bugginess and unfinishedness always put me off. So I'm set to jump right into it fresh.

one month passes...

but i think this game is a failure tbh and can only really be appreciated as an autopsy. it's not, or not just, that it's unfinished-- the Restored Content Mod renders the plot and most of the character arcs complete if still obscure; and these days it runs much stabler than kotor1. (haven't played the recent rerelease but presumably that works too.) but the more you understand what it's trying to do-- link the story's themes of teachers/students/choices to the practice of a padawan-rearing CYOA-- the more you feel compelled to plan the narrative development of your character far in advance, exactly as if it were a mechanical "build".

the game wants you to stumble naturally across triggers in the plot and environments that develop, not just your character, but the (many!) characters in your party. this is normal enough and now in fact an obsidian cliche, but unlike fallout new vegas or the pillars games or the (not good) the outer worlds, your relationship w your companions is the primary theme of the game's plot and the source of most of its content; the triggers that shape them are unevenly scattered and easy to miss or lock; and reaching the end of the main plot without having properly developed your companions leaves you w a very strange feeling that you have been told a story that had a point which has been removed. so you play it again and this time you know what you're doing, and suddenly the game is about cycling people in and out of your party in order to get the game to tell you the version of its story you have decided you want to hear. instead of being a kind of narrative space you freely explore while listening to lectures about freely exploring narrative space, the game is at first almost impossible to appreciate and then on replay responds to appreciation by becoming a game where you are always taking arbitrary actions in the service of picking plot components like feats. meanwhile you are listening to lectures. (stand by my spoilery assessment of kreia above-- an extremely cleverly designed NPC-- but the circuitous bull-session avellone dialogue style where everyone says "perhaps" 9000 times a conversation is tested to its v limits w her.)

a noble failure tho, which would be still be better than kotor1 if its environments weren't so denuded and hasty. as it is they're both huge wastes of time lol
