you won't regret buying RE4, although i hear the Outbreak series is a bit wank.

ResE5 for Xbox 360 early next year, if it's in keeping with the fourth ones format I'll definitely be buying it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Shit, I might have to rent a 360 for a week.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I might just devote all my spare time to games now.

I mean hell, why not

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought RE3 was totally underrated. God, I played every possible bit out of that thing, even to the point of repetitively trying to better my own time on the time-run mode ("mercenary"?) that opens up when you beat it. The whole idea of Nemesis was great; it gave you a real sense of the terror of some completely unstoppable Terminator type thing coming after you.
I spent all Christmas vacation in what must have been 1999 (6 years ago? Jesus...) playing that. Hopefully I can pull a couple of all-nighters with RE4 at a game-obsessed friend's (he has like literally every current-gen console out there!) place this winter break.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 24 November 2005 08:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Speaking of, now that I've beaten RE4 into the ground and I've got my hands on a PS2 (as well as GC), can we do a S/D of Resident Evils?

I played 1 and 2 when they came out, but what about the weird ones like ZERO and CODE X?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Is Code X one of the shhoting ones?

Code Veronica is rubbish.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, I guess I meant Veronica.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 November 2005 19:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Code Veronica wasn't all that bad, bloody hard though I was always running out of ammo too soon.

I think number 2 and 3 are my favourite although I do prefer watching my housemate play them rather than myself.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 25 November 2005 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Code Veronica mostly sucked because polygonal environments weren't ready for prime time. I'm guessing that RE4 must have solved this problem since everyone loves it, but one of the strengths of pre-Veronica resident evils was the camera angles attached to the static environments, with all the cinematic foreboding they allowed (going down that hallway, the way the camera relates to the windows you KNOW something is going to come through them). Obviously this was a big weakness too in a lot of ways, but Veronica as far as I remember didn't handle this element very well.

I am playing and enjoying the ps2 version of late. I liked the first three okay but this seems much better.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Code: Veronica did not suck.

latebloomer: Do I have a large frog in my hair? (latebloomer), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

the graphics were excellent, the atmosphere and location was well-executed, and the villains and final boss were creepy. it was a bit backtrack-heavy, unfortunately, and you were screwed if you an out of ammo. but overall it was one of the best Resident Evils.

(and to clear up the confusion from upthread, Code Veronica X is just the PS2 "director's cut" edition of Code: Veronica, which debuted on Dreamcast.)

latebloomer: Do I have a large frog in my hair? (latebloomer), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah sorry I guess I was basically talking out my ass. I played it for like 2.5 hours and I kept getting stuck in the same 4-5 hallways that looked like the insides of a really generic elementary school.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I never liked the cross bow gun, which you seemed to get lumbered with not long in the game. Give me a bloody shotgun for killing zombies please PLEASE!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, the cross bow is mostly worthless, except for whe you get the exploding arows.

latebloomer: Do I have a large frog in my hair? (latebloomer), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:09 (fourteen years ago) link

There was a little too much poisoning as well.

I remember it having some gorgeous graphics at times though, especially in the mansion.

But I think I stopped playing after I'd completed it as the woman, all this talk is making me want to give it all another go.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 11:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Code Veronica looked better than RE3, say. But it was out at the same time as Capcom was making Resident Evil/Resident Evil Zero for the Gamecube, compared with which it looks like absolute shit.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 27 November 2005 11:41 (fourteen years ago) link

is that for PS2 though? I thought it was out a lot earlier than that for the Dreamcast

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 12:10 (fourteen years ago) link

it very much was.

tom west (thomp), Sunday, 27 November 2005 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

True. Though it hardly looked better on the Dreamcast.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 27 November 2005 20:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Is Zero worth playing in the post-RE4 era?

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 27 November 2005 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Code: Veronica looked great on the Dreamcast, and at the time it was state of the art. Resident Evil's GC remake and RE Zero didnt come out until a few years later. I loved the RE 1 remake, as it totally transformed the original into a truly frightening experience. I never played Zero. I'm not sure how much either would hold up in light of RE 4 though, as that game improved the control scheme so much i'm afraid they're might be no going back!

two years pass...

I just bought Code Veronica for PS2 99p. This will be my first RE game since RE2 way back when it came out, I think.

onimo, Thursday, 24 January 2008 00:28 (twelve years ago) link

for PS2 *for 99p

onimo, Thursday, 24 January 2008 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

great game, i had it for the dreamcast originally and then re-purchased it for ps2 and there was little difference.

less static backdrops than the previous games (the camera pans around in most rooms), and hi-res looking graphics.

The usual standard of great puzzles.

Love those crossbows.

It's pretty big if I recall, took me some time to finish.

Ste, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:15 (twelve years ago) link

So you never played RE3? That was alright i thought, a lot faster than the others. Stop making me want to play these while i'm sat at work :)

Actually I fired up the fourth one again recently, started from the beginning. Soon ran out of ammo, got pissed off, switched it off.

Ste, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

haha i said 'love those crossbows' and looking back on this thread i've said i hated them. ooh confusion.

Ste, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:20 (twelve years ago) link

i think i liked their 'effect' of sticking arrows in the zombies, but it was a pretty weak gun. Better mixed with gunpowder of course.

Ste, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:22 (twelve years ago) link

two months pass...

this is kinda amazing:

Jordan, Thursday, 10 April 2008 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

Been playing the Wii version lately. The outdoor levels are amazing, but the castle and sewer levels are kind of meh. Running around the village at the beginning is the best part of the game. (and one of the hardest, too -- I gave up on the PS2 version early on because I kept getting decapitated by leatherfaces. the wii controls are a big help.)

anyone going to play The Evil Within? seems very similar to RE4 but with RE1's ammo scarcity + some stealth?

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 20:16 (five years ago) link

i'm a fan! it's difficult. and not tremendously scary but i see it as more of an arty horror experience. like in the sense that the shining is considered horror, i guess. the level design is A+ and that's mainly what i love about it.

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 23:27 (five years ago) link

downloading this now. will ride for gamecube re4 til the day i die

Anyone play the Resident Evil 2 remake?

adam, Thursday, 7 February 2019 21:13 (one year ago) link

Sweet. So is it basically RE4 gameplay + the old-school slow pace and ammo scarcity?

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 7 February 2019 21:16 (one year ago) link

basically. the pace isn't that slow, leon is as nimble here as he is in re4. backtracking to grab a key or whatever is way less stressful because you can kind of see what's coming and make a run for it instead of falling prey to camera angles.

the level and puzzle design remain as good as ever. i thought the new controls would break the whole thing but it's just sort of recontextualized this virtual space that i've seen in a wholly different way for 20 years.

adam, Thursday, 7 February 2019 21:20 (one year ago) link

I want it

||||||||, Thursday, 7 February 2019 22:36 (one year ago) link

Is the unkillable hulking dude who stalks you through the whole thing as stressful as it seems?

circa1916, Thursday, 7 February 2019 22:43 (one year ago) link

Thinking of watching this on twitch. Can anyone recommend a non annoying streamer?

calstars, Thursday, 7 February 2019 23:03 (one year ago) link

My fave Dark Souls dude is doing it:
