Desperately in need of a remake obv

TOMBOT, Thursday, 3 November 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I never played this but the first half hour of Xenosaga really scared me off.

adam (adam), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:49 (eighteen years ago) link

The Xenosaga games for PS2 are unbearable shit. Takahashi created the original series at Squeenix but then he left to go sap money from Namco to start over and get everything "the way he really wanted it." So we know what that means.

It doesn't really have furries in it! Just that poof thing!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 3 November 2005 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

the second disc was weird. is it true that they ran out of time/money to complete it?

I like it how one character sacrifices herself Jesus-like.... and it leads her friends to discover the secrets of immortality...

also I was shocked by the ending, but perhaps I misinterpreted it. as I saw it the main characters defeat the bad guy by showing him true love, but from the flashbacks the player knows that their love was created by a computer virus in order to replicate a child's need for his mother, and they only did that so that humans could develop the planet.

at the end of the credits it says it's episode 4, but I just took that as a star wars joke. I guess namco didn't.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:21 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah I just remembered why I never replayed it: the text speed is amazingly SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW and there's tons of useless dialogue in the game.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I also like how the characters get hungry for the first time as soon as they visit the Soylent system.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:24 (eighteen years ago) link

According to some sites where they've gone and run strings on the second disc, there's a lot of written story material that got left out because there was no more time/money to do the level design. Hence only like 3 real 'dungeons' to explore on CD 2.

It just seems like the game could just use one more coat of polish and some expansion of the material towards the end and it would be really great. As it is it really sort of derails right before the climax, I feel like it just has wasted potential. Obviously the creator's concept of the game and mine are vastly different though, if the Xenosaga installments are what Takahashi really wanted. Ugh.

what's the deal with the ones coming out for DS?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I stopped playing this right during the final dungeon. Just...stopped.

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 4 November 2005 06:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Xenogears is the best videogame. It will be years before I fully understand why I believe this, although that list is illuminating. I also think that the story is homologous to the visuals of Katamari Damacy; you are in control of a massive hulking conglomerate that expands while the camera pans out revealing shocking horizons. The best part of Final Fantasy VII is like this: when you finally leave Midgar and the world map appears for the first time. The entirety of Xenogears plays like this!

allen riley (allenriley), Friday, 4 November 2005 06:41 (eighteen years ago) link

S1ock the deal with the one coming out for DS is that Takahashi has been sacked and Namco/Monolith probably want to take the series into yet another direction prior to the 3rd & final installment coming out. They're editing two PS2 games down to fit in a single DS game.

I'm a little anxious to hear more, because frankly the Xenosaga games in their original form are so horribly bad that any editing or redesign can only help. Also, superdeformed 2D character design, practically always a plus in my book.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 November 2005 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Man the Christos got nothing on the Anti-Type. You have to check out the Gnostic myths, go to town connecting the dots in that shit.

Also, this is the official history, translated from a Japanese "companion guide" to the game, for super otaku, I guess:

I think my copy still works. It got some water damage somehow while being stored in my parents' basement. I don't think i've tried the game in like 4+ years.

I do associate this game with SDRE's "The Rising Tide," since I would stay up all night after getting home from my bar shift listening to that disc and playing the game.

Well put.

Xenosaga Episode 1 is dire in comparison. I never finished it and haven't bothered with Episode 2. I don't even know if that's out, actually.

Why was the Genesis called the Mega-Drive everywhere else than America?

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:17 (eighteen years ago) link

The Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis was a 16-bit video game console released by Sega in Japan (1988), North America (1989), Europe (1990) and most of the rest of the world as the Mega Drive. It debuted under the name "Genesis" in North America, as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that territory.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:30 (eighteen years ago) link

But "MegaDrive" doesn't lend itself to "ABACAB" puns so easily!

When are they going to re-release this thing?

I still have fond memories of this. It's amazing that I finished it. I played through a borrowed copy on a borrowed PS1 from an AF buddy when we were living in the same barracks building (311 TRS J Flight forever, man). If a $29.99 app store version came out I would buy it tomorrow just to try and remember how the hell all the plot points were threaded together. Back in the golden age when every JRPG was stone sci-fi trope soup that ended up being about the Demiurge, and that was okay, this one still did it the best. Except for FFT, but I never did finish that one.
