PS2 Memory Card reverse compatibility?

So I'm playing Final Fantasy 7 for the first time on a PS2 instead of a PS, and for some reason it isn't detecting my memory card. I don't want to get too deeply into this game without being able to save it, so I'm not sure what to do. I even dumped a bunch of old stuff off the memory card to make room, but no dice. Any advice? Would wiping the entire thing help? I'm sure the info is out there on the internet somewhere but I am really ill and feel too shitty to bother.

i think it's something to do with how the cards are built. i don't think that they're completely compatible.

they aren't compatible at all. you have to buy a shitty 128K ps1 card.

It occurred to me that this might result in forced rogueism.

I tried this game without a memory card once, but got pwned by the big robot in the lift at the Shinra headquarters :( Not even halfway into the first disc, and it still felt like a pretty monumental waste of time.

I might give it a try and then try to pick up a memory card partway through. Maybe try to get info on big bosses before I fight them so all is not lost...

I play it on a pc emulator, pressing F1 to save at any point at all is pretty ruinous and impossibly hard to stay away from, especially on that basketball hoop mini-game.

I had to buy a 3-pack of PS1 cards just because I wanted to play FF Tactics and I've barely touched it since (thank you nintendo for ruining my plans with your damned DS that is backwards compatible with GBA and runs forever on a single charge, what the hell)
