Mostly motivated by the fact that Stellaris is on sale, and the posts for it (mostly from 2016) seem to be pretty mixed on ILG. Is it better now with the DLC content? Or is there another space 4x game that I should lose sleep over?

Also I should note that this is the 4X games thread for games that are not Civ.

I had to look up "4X", I've never heard this term related to this genre.

Is Northgard a 4x game? That was probably the last one I tried, with a friend online, but found it a bit lacking in the long term. It also had no save facility which was annoying.

I swore off these games after wasting way too much time on Civ 2 and Civ 3.

haven't played stellaris cuz find the volume of dlc bewildering/dispiriting. usually frustrated by space 4x, which are never as terrifyingly huge as i want them to be: galciv feels flat and banal; the sins of a solar empire interface keeps repelling me. but i can still play good ol master of orion 2 (not v deep but always a joy) and (less defensibly) space empires 4, a game that looks and plays like windows 3.1 but has everything, each individual ugly element of which will require your obsessive attention every turn.
