BOTW: Freedom! Horrible, horrible freedom!
Bloodborne: To hell with all this dying.
Witcher 3: The writing is dumb, and I hate all of these characters, except maybe the rando peasant I threw a boxing match to so that he could win a bag of flour for his family.
Super Mario Odyssey: franchise JTS'ed when it went 3D.
Hades, Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn: All fine, don't get the fuss though.

Maybe I should just quit video games (at least until after I play Silksong).

I would actually be very down to see the shortlist of games with interesting and involving stories. Like non-indie games, maybe, as those seem to make more of an effort.

First person games are bad, cut scenes longer than 10 seconds are bad, and yes, video game narratives are bad.

Except for...idk, Street Fighter? Just enough character sketched out for you to fill in the gaps with weird stories when you were a kid.

First person games are bad

First person/in car is the only way to play any driving game.

Modern games with cutesy retro graphics are shit

it isn't even a Fraktion (Noodle Vague), Friday, 5 November 2021 10:21 (two years ago) link

in car view is great (Shift did an amazing job imo with all the juddering effects - shame about the bugs) but often it's too difficult being able to assess 360 degrees information coming at you. VR can fix this sometimes.

example is GTA, in car is just stressful.

I have played more in cab view with Farming Sim lately, but this is a game that essentially relies on looking behind and forward almost all the time. There's a mod that allows me to extend the Fov which means I'm not having to rotate too much though. Forget trying to fork bales in cab though, judging distances ain't happening on a flat screen.

Which part of it? The games, or just the toxicity? Because I'm ok with online as long as there's no voice chat.

Ledge's life tier list seems right to me, in terms of my normal day-to-day use of free time and what makes me feel better instead of worse, I think of it like "creating art > reading books > seeing friends > watching tv > playing videogames". Even though I really like playing a select few games, I generally feel the worst about my use of time if I spend too long doing it.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2021 17:17 (two years ago) link

xp I was half-kidding with that one. Mostly the toxicity, but also just the fact that in-person multiplayer is such a better social experience. To be fair though, online multiplayer is a nice thing to have when you're forced indoors due to a pandemic (for example).

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 5 November 2021 17:52 (two years ago) link

it doesn't really make sense to me that games would be worse for your brain than tv but i guess i play a lot of puzzle games and rpg/strategy type games, maybe if you're just playing uncharted type stuff it's worse

ciderpress, Friday, 5 November 2021 17:58 (two years ago) link

the only time online multiplayer is superior than local co-op is when it does things that are otherwise impossible, like a 100-player battle royale. otherwise, it is very much better to play with friends than strangers (unless your friends are also kids who keep their mic on all the time and are constantly arguing with their siblings)

just staying (Karl Malone), Friday, 5 November 2021 18:00 (two years ago) link

I do feel that playing games is more active in terms of using my brain, but I mostly watch tv with my wife, so it's more of a shared experience that can generate discussion, etc. But I also feel better after watching something really engaging like say The Leftovers and doing some personal reflection, whereas playing games is more like going to the gym for my brain, a loop of quick thinking and reactions.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

The one time I remember playing a game all day - skyrim, from getting up to going to bed - I felt sordid and dirty. Possibly I've never watched TV for such a sustained period but I think that at its best TV (and films) can be as, ahem, improving, as literature, but all games teach you is how to play games. Sorry for old fashioned reithian ideas but this is a terrible opinions thread.

What they should do about cut scenes: All these games should have an option to let you watch a whole bunch of extended cut scenes that explain the lore and backstory of the game while you eat your dinner, and then as soon as you're done, you just jump straight into the action.

I actually like cut scenes

So as not to derail the Elden Ring thread... I don't know why I'm so sensitive to not enjoying sacred cows, I'm not that way anymore with other media nowadays. Maybe because I'm overconsuming a very monolithic slice of games criticism that constantly bangs on about the same bunch of games?

I'm not disagreeing with Dunkey there (after watching the video for 20 seconds), but I assume it glosses over a lot of what makes Horizon better than other open world games (that I've never played and probably will never play).

if your favorite band puts out a 5x LP you're probably overjoyed while the average person isn't interested in hearing the band's 20th through 50th best songs. open world games almost always feel like this unless the gameplay fundamentally makes use of distance and space (e.g. forza horizon). i don't think breath of the wild or elden ring are at all exempt here, theres just a lot of people whose favorite band is zelda or dark souls

ciderpress, Saturday, 26 February 2022 18:40 (two years ago) link

yes!!

my "terrible" opinion, is that no AAA game is worth whatever bullshit "launcher" they make you install in order to play it. I have a few friends who regard me as a cranky old man for refusing to play any of them.

beard papa, Wednesday, 8 November 2023 04:38 (five months ago) link

You mean like on a PC? That would get annoying fast.

I actually like a lot of video game stories, and the immersion of playing them often lifts even the boilerplate stuff. I also find, just as no bad lyrics sink a great album but great lyrics make great albums better, that when you *do* come across great writing in video games, it makes an impact. I think of something like "Hades," an otherwise simple game which is really lifted by the quality (and quantity) of writing. "Red Dead Redemption 2" is an example of a relatively boilerplate story that is improved by the quality/quantity of writing. Or even "Hollow Knight," where the translated jibber-jabber of the characters give the (non) story more appeal, and your exploration more interest.

Though I'd argue both "Last of Us" games are elevated not really by the quality of the writing (which isn't bad) but the quality of the *acting*, which is especially unusual in video games.
