Don't we always end up doing it in January? Also just give the number one slot to the horrible goose right now.

we usually run it after the ILM end of year stuff is over, in feburary/march

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 December 2019 16:12 (two years ago) link

and i hope we're continuing that as i've only just started catching up on 2019 games

I always like to see Coint and Plick but I think Untitled Goose Game is the only new game I've played this year. If I spend more money than I should in the Steam sale, then Baba Is You and/or Dicey Dungeons will join it.

Anyway, hope it runs, up for reading it, probably not up for voting in it.

(S'pose I've played Katamari Damacy Reroll, which may or may not count as a reissue, and which came out in Dec 2018, so is maybe/maybe not eligible on two counts)

(merry xmas ILG btw)

i ended up playing quite a lot unusually for me, mainly because i stopped reading i think. sekiro, excellent, spider-man, dreadful. insight and card of darkness a+. sonic racing ru serious. may vote in this for the first time.

xxxp so is apple arcade worth subbing?

Mordy, Wednesday, 25 December 2019 18:32 (two years ago) link

It's definitely worth doing the trial, and I haven't turned it off yet after a few months. It is super nice to play all these "free"ish new phone games that aren't crippled by free-to-play monetization bullshit. I don't think the first killer Arcade exclusive game is on the platform yet though.

Here's a best of list I was looking at earlier:

Shouldn’t we be doing coint and plick for the decade

I mean that way I’d at least get to participate and have opinions

El Tomboto, Thursday, 26 December 2019 15:41 (two years ago) link

it would be fun to have time to go back and play some older stuff. maybe later in the year?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 December 2019 19:57 (two years ago) link

tomboto otm

in my grand tradition of proposing big ideas that are 50% ok and 45% dumb (and 5% incomprehensible), what about this big dumb idea:

FACT 1: several of the 11 people in the ILG community struggle with coint and plick because we haven't had enough time to play games from the previous year and/or we're waiting for price drops and/or we're playing an AAA open world game that takes at least 110 hours to complete.

SOLUTION 1: imagine a world where coint and plick would cover games from TWO years ago. For example, coint and plick Dec 2020/Jan 2021 would cover games released in 2019, coint and plick Dec 2021/Jan 2022 would cover games from 2020, etc. This would give us all more time to play games, and also allow to conduct coint and plick during the December holiday season, which is the universally preferred approach for annual polls.

COMPLICATING FACT 1: but what would we do this holiday season, if we would have to wait until Dec 2020 to vote on games from 2019? my thumb is already way up my ass, what else can i do in the meantime??

FACT 2: a 2010-19 coint and plick decade poll would rule

SOLUTION 2: we do the decade poll soon (enough time to give people to get their thumbs out of their asses and back onto the d-pad, but soon). then in Dec 2020 we resume the regular annual coint and plick schedule, with the Dec 2020 poll covering 2019 games.

just a thought, but it makes sense to me. i guess the biggest drawback is that maybe it's not as much fun to do an annual poll about games released 1 1/2 - 2 years prior. but...we kind of already do that anyway, so why not push that back a smidge and get us on a more sensible schedule?

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 26 December 2019 21:14 (two years ago) link

Do you what ye like but my vote would still be to have time to think about it, and 2019 games are part of the range we'd be considering anyway.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 December 2019 22:04 (two years ago) link

feel like you gotta settle 2019 before settling the decade that contains 2019 but i don't really have strong opinions about what we do

ciderpress, Thursday, 26 December 2019 22:19 (two years ago) link

Would definitely jump at the chance to vote for TLOU, so would super a decade poll! But also I've bought a ton of 2019 games so would enjoy participating in that as well.

four weeks pass...

I'm literally seeing this thread now, I haven't been very on ILX lately sorry everyone :(

Happy to run best of 2019 poll! Only thing I'm not 100% sure is if I can do the literal posts (starting new job) but we can cross that bridge if/when we get there.

I'd also be down to run end of decade but maybe would do that AFTER, like maybe even spring/summer? I'd also like to go back to do more generation polls if anyone remembers those. I know they didn't include pc games really but hey that could be its own poll anyway. Idk hi I'm sort of back everyone

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Monday, 17 January 2022 20:38 (ten months ago) link

a long time ago there was an idea about making coint and plick about games from TWO years ago instead of the previous year

Karl Malone, Monday, 17 January 2022 20:56 (ten months ago) link

I'd like to see this year's happen but can't promise I'd get a ballot in.

Wouldn't necessarily mind a "what were you playing last year" poll but I've never been into the "games from two years ago" idea - I would absolutely forget about things or not realise they were from the correct year, it would be much more of a problem for me than the issue of not having got round to something in the year of release.

emil.y, Monday, 17 January 2022 21:05 (ten months ago) link

I played a handful of 2021 games so I could do a small ballot or I could just give 100 points to Hitman

salsa shark, Monday, 17 January 2022 21:12 (ten months ago) link

Went through my records and found that I played... a single 2021 game. So, shrug.

this is kind of interesting but i have a couple of concerns - one, the results are already super disparate and this would only widen the gap, and two, we're just gonna end up with the same games at the top of the list every year... i know games aren't the same as movies and music, but imagine doing this on one of those polls?

absolutely, question is will it be the exception or the rule? idk how interesting it'll be if every year we have the same GaaS or classic games pop up.

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:35 (ten months ago) link

i suppose the question is what the purpose of coint and plick is? Consumer guide? Place to share past year's experience? Hall of fame?

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:56 (ten months ago) link

I think it's sort of the second one, i.e. a statement of what games released from the past year you played and liked, which at the same time is sort of a consumer guide (as all such lists tend to be).

I have floated the idea of a separate Hall of Fame voting before, with the stipulation that a game has to be some number of years old before we can vote on them.

Wordle Stephen Curry II (Leee), Thursday, 20 January 2022 22:03 (ten months ago) link

It seems sort of purposeless to be honest but I like making lists

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 January 2022 22:03 (ten months ago) link

I like it as a way of sharing gaming experiences, which works best when people submit blurbs for their selections, but that obviously creates a lot more work for the coordinator.

salsa shark, Thursday, 20 January 2022 23:55 (ten months ago) link

Going against the grain here and saying keeping the year IS important, even/especially for people like me who play few games in their release year anymore. Like how many times have we had a discussion go 'oh yeah, this placed high in P&C that year, people liked it at the time!" And those blurbs are key, combing through posts and feedback (like salsa, that effort to collect it is immensely appreciated).

Nhex, Friday, 21 January 2022 13:31 (ten months ago) link

The problem with calendar year is obviously that a) most games come out in the last 3 months of the year which doesn't leave a lot of time for people to play them before Dec 31st even if they are buying stuff on release, and b) outside gamepass, playing new games on release is an increasingly niche activity anyway given that everyone has backlogs and almost everything that's £60-70 in Q4 will be £30 within 6 months and £20 within 12 months.

So polling a month or two into the new year just feels too soon. Maybe polling the best games of 2021 in November 2022 would make more sense. Or even polling the best games of 2020 in November 2022.

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:06 (ten months ago) link

(I just scrolled up and Karl suggested this same thing 2 years ago. But yeah these are the reasons I've not voted in the last couple of P&Cs. This month I've made a start on Assassin's Creed Valhalla and then I'm moving on to Cyberpunk, both still feel pretty new tbh but yeah technically they're both 2020 games so even if it turns out I love them, I've missed my chance to rep for them).

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:33 (ten months ago) link

(I just scrolled up a bit less and Karl suggested it again like 4 days ago ha).

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:34 (ten months ago) link

Haha, yeah it’s not a winning idea, sadly

I do kind of like the idea of a periodic all-time list, either hall of fame style or a rolling hot 100 kind of thing. But that’s a lot more work for whoever has to run the thing, and it would have to be done semi-regularly

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 January 2022 15:24 (ten months ago) link

Too much work for everyone for a little nerdy fun honestly

Nhex, Friday, 21 January 2022 17:57 (ten months ago) link

I think, as I sometimes do, of a universe where ILX became reddit and we all became admins for a community of hundreds of thousands and polls like this got write ups in the Guardian

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2022 20:42 (ten months ago) link

is there an easy casual midway point for an end of year review where we have a dedicated '2021 in review' thread and everyone is invited to post their fav game(s), top recommendations, fav game from a previous year, disappointments etc - but without someone having to set up a nomination thread and coordinate the rankings and reveal? though realise it would probably overlap someehat with the 'what are you playing' thread
