I goddamn love this game.

I did a play through where I was unlocking all the blueprints etc., and I won normal mode, then hard mode, but found that two-boss-cell mode was simply too challenging for me; also, as I play green builds (and thus am typically reliant upon legendary drops to make it through), the full-menu of blueprints became an impediment rather than a blessing.

So I started another game on my boyfriend's account. Unlocked NO weapons except the things I like: Crusher, Ice Bow, Death Orb, Infantry Bow, Explosive Decoy. Have enjoyed some very streamlined play-throughs. Can beat HotK on normal mode with any build at this point, but haven't beat him on one-boss-cell yet (on my boyfriend's account).

I mostly want to get three-boss-cells so I can finally get that stupid gardener's key blueprint thingthing

The real truth to this game is that you've just got to learn how to time your dodging and blocking. No enemy is impossible once you know it... but yes, cheesing your way until you get the patterns together is the way to do it.

i started playing ... two weeks ago? and i have so far made it to the Hand once so i guess i still remember when the Concierge was where i had trouble. forks:

-- every attack the concierge has can be avoided
-- they each have a different warning animation
-- which is good, because you probably need to avoid each of them slightly different ways (dodge vs jump and dodge vs block, if you have a shield)

if you need more of a breather between attacks then think what equipment you might bring will help with that. most bosses aren't immune to most slowing/immobilisation/damage over time stuff

My favourite build is green-focused (7 7 20 by the end). Ice Bow or Spiked Shield paired with a complimentary legendary main weapon (the only green-specific main weapon I'll take is the symmetrical sword; my favourite build is legendary Infantry Bow paired with normal Ice Bow, but that only comes around once every 20 games). Green builds do well with Wolf Trap + Crusher. Deploy them both and high-green stats will ruin anything quickly

The one time I beat tHotK with a green build on 2 Boss Cells, the combination of Wolf Trap and Ice Bow basically glitched the dude out, he was trapped and frozen and flashing between two frames as I landed critical after critical with a legendary something (prob the Infantry Bow, getting a legendary one of those just makes me play wonderfully)

I can't stress enough too that it's good to get FAST at this game. I play speed-run right up until the timed door on the Forgotten Sepulcher (Promenade > Ramparts > Stilt > Sepulcher).

I found the Death Orb blueprint a little too rare to come by naturally and so I saved seeking it out until I had access to the Blueprint Extractor (it's in the Sepulcher, the fat dudes carry it)

i'm trying not to spoil myself too much but i'm on the verge of beating conjunctivitis (surely the game designers were hoping those last 7 words would be typed in exactly that way)

forks is fine! I may not have mentioned this lately, but I switched accounts because i amassed a few thousand bookmarks and, rather than clean that up, i figured a fresh start was a good look. i'll answer to whatever.

I guess i've only beaten the one that gives me the ability to climb vines? I'm bad at this but i like it.

i went with a green build for the first time, a patented FGTI wolf trap/crusher combo, and i was indeed unstoppable...until i fucked up and replaced my legendary fire brands III-L with a lightning bolt VI at the last moment, just before the time keeper. i've never had much luck with lightning bolt, due to the delayed attack. but it was especially bad because i paired it with a crossbow, which also has a terrible delay. and even then, i almost beat the time keeper. i can see how the green build can work now, and i'm pumped to try it again.

Lightning Bolt is popular with other players, I had a generally good trip up to the Hand (didn't win tho) using it paired with an Ice Bow, but it's just too slow for me to really love it.

Fire Brands is wonderful, Pyrotechnics also, I would never turn down a legendary version of either if I found one on a green run. My current game I haven't unlocked many blueprints because I want to keep the pool as narrow as possible. I'm toying with the idea of getting the Hayabusa Gauntlets in my pool bc I really really like them.

Shields: I only unlocked Spiked and Assault. I've seen playthroughs where the Spiked shield becomes wildly powerful once the green stat approaches 20, but I'm still figuring it out.

You will always get one legendary from Concierge/Conjunctivius and Time Keeper, about 1 in 10 times from an elite (along with the guaranteed pendant), and randomly from enemies (if you're killing everything you'll get an average of one per run it seems)

i finally beat Conjunctivitis last night, and then had a great run until dying just a little short of the final (i think?) boss

my big mistake was in "upgrading" my ranged weapon at the last second. somehow i was still rolling with Legendary III throwing knives, which were incredibly useful because they were causing and spreading bleeding, 3+ ammo so i could throw them pretty much as fast as i could tap the button. but then i came across a crossbow VII and thought it would be an improvement because the DPS was so much higher. in reality, i was suddenly saddles with a slow weapon (broadsword), a slow ranged (crossbow), and a pair of skill/traps that didn't compensate for my sudden slowness. within a few minutes i had died.

Bosses no longer drop Legendary items, but 1 weapon and 1 active skill instead. Legendaries are now "world drop", so you may encounter them when killing mobs or on the new "legendary altars". The level generator has also been adjusted to ensure you find a "Legendary Altar" in most of your runs. You may also get legendaries as rewards of advanced challenges, like beating a boss without getting hit.

no big deal on its own but there are a lot of changes that are this significant. juuuust as i was getting the hang of it and about to beat it, it totally changes! still, i'm assuming most of the changes are for the better and it's really cool that they're paying attention and trying to improve it

The rebalancing of 0 BC is so easified that I was able to breeze through on a purple build.

Ice Bow is nerfed but still awesome, generally it doesn’t feel as punishing to go red or purple on the damage in the later levels

If they did this much rebalancing I might try grenades one day

0 BC (the difficulty you start off on) is much, much easier now. All builds (red, purple, green) are now viable. The game feels less like "an extremely difficult game that you have to break to win" and more like "a highly balanced game where every option that is available has its benefits".

There are still so many blueprints I am missing! surprise!

They cunningly lift the restrictions on legendary weapons, tho, so you can’t, say, limit auxiliary weapons to “death orb” only, play green, then expect that you’ll get a legendary death orb to match your green build. It’s very clever!

finally managed to get to the second boss

got my first couple of colourless weapons too. erring towards brutality builds atm: had a good thing going earlier w the infantry bow (criticals at short range) and marksman's bow (criticals at long range)

The "kill 30/60 enemies without taking damage" bonus is an awesome new development... encourages more careful play (over speedy play) and my game is getting better. In previous versions it was the move to try and pick up as many scrolls as possible and so the timed doors meant speed speed speed. Now there's no reason to power through.

I'm also noticing that gold is more valuable now, in terms of upgrading your gear... maybe it's just me but I'm finding myself having to make hard decisions.

I've been trying to win again at 1 BC with the update, trying purple and red builds (green builds are less viable now that legendaries are less common). Haven't been successful, haven't even made it to the Time Keeper. I love this game
