like overall it's pretty good, but a) they put a bunch of unfun, typical platformer shit in here, and b) it's v goofy and clearly designed for very little kids and I'm like 30 playing this shit

yeah yr right this would be so much better if mario was a bald space marine slogging through a world painted entirely in shades of brown

Of course it's better than Mario 64.
Mario has never controlled better. No third person character has ever controlled better.
What does "unfun, typical platformer shit" mean? xp
― abcfsk, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:27 (six years ago) link
It's not a revolution like BOTW, but it expands the ways in which a 3D Mario can operate, without losing the platforming part. Most 3d 'platformers' originating in the 32 bit era are not about platforming but about mucking about looking for shit. This is still about platforming, but allows for a looser structure, more exploration and more freeform platforming than before. Despite the more open nature of the worlds the game has never felt tighter or better paced.

got my Mario switch yesterday, had a few fun hours with it before bedtime. i haven't bought a Mario game new since SNES Super Mario All Stars so this is pretty crazy lol. absolutely gorgeous game!
really loving the trippiness of Mario's discorporate adventures. throwing the hat on the frog was really intense, seeing Mario being sucked through the bardos, his ego twisted into the cosmos on the way to renewed consciousness. then later seeing telephone wire electricity Mario... woah...

T-Rex was awesome, i loved the smashy gameplay, and the naturalistic graphics were impressive. it was a little disconcerting to see the realistic dinosaur, given that we have (beloved) dinosaurs already in Mario and Yoshi looks nothing like a realistic T-Rex. its kind of eerie when you see it in a Mario game. i do love how this game plays with the Uncanny Valley type stuff. i saw a realistic human and car out in the desert. it was really funny to come across. i can't wait to see what they do with New Donk City.

― ciderpress, Sunday, 5 November 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link
Yup, sounds about right, B+/A-, I'd say. I'm happy with it - though of course, just about any game would seem a bit underwhelming after Breath of the Wild - not every game HAS to be a thrilling 100-hour journey. I'm even fine with the platforming being fairly easy, after suffering through most of Sunshine back in the day. Some of the post-game challenges are pushing me, though, and I'll likely give up before completing most of the second tier Freerunning courses, for example.

its more linear than i expected but i am loving this game. right now im at New Donk City and have been consistently surprised by so many things. it feels like a culmination of Mario games and control schemes, all perfected in glorious HD, with a post-Mario Maker sense of the playful. the transforming stuff is cool and imo rare enough to where it never feels like a gimmick.
currently in New Donk City and really loving it. i got to the 2D part and was saying "Wow" outloud to myself. always hoped they would do something cool w that area and hell yes this was awesome. i love the nostalgic 2D bits in the game. the way it's kind of like Mario Maker is etched into the sides of buildings and ruins. the past world rendered as hieroglyphics in the new landscape.
i am getting LOLz also from the Sonic references. there was one level in the forest where you could make Mario run and collect giant rings. then a large curve later shows up, upside-down, in a triumphant and nostalgic sequence, and honestly it's a funny moment that kind of takes the pomposity out of it. that's what this game's all about really. just playing around. and it plays great.

pirate goombas: cutest thing ever?
also the boss fight vs. the octopus, holy crap, this is actually difficult! very fun and challenging tho! for real a highlight.
tbh not that i demand decent boss fights in a Mario game but it is a nice change of pace from the Rabbids earlier. those felt like the piss easy mini bosses in SMB3. just one mechanic over and over. this on the other hand is crazy. i'm flying all up and down the Z axis. i'm narrowly avoiding missiles as i chasing this giant octopus across the beach. and i'm an octopus too! aaah!
just swimming around as a fish is wonderful. i am looking forward to coming back to find all the hidden moons after i win story mode.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:16 (six years ago) link
I'm getting near to the end (I think), and it's been a pretty fun game, so far. I got so spoiled by Zelda though.
I've been able to beat all the bosses after a few tries, so far, which is just about the right difficulty level. The biggest issue for me is (as with all of the 3D Mario games since Mario 64) is just getting the controls/camera to work. It works about as well as can be expected, but I still find myself falling off the edge of stuff and missing moving platforms, etc. Not sure how they could make it any better, but it's still frustrating.

M64 is great. i prefer SMO bc there are none of the control or camera issues in the earlier game. anything with the snow/ice levels, anything with sledding, or flying, was a nightmare. i can see how someone could grow up with the game would not mind those bits or have figured it out long ago but for me it may still be a while before i beat it. of course it was one of the first 3d games ever so even with the issues it had it was a staggering pioneering achievement.
SMO is great because it is like the Imax version of M64. it uses a very similar control scheme and exploratory level design. the camera angles also feel very M64 inspired - even with a modern camera there is a primacy of cinematic vistas. SMO sort of acts as a sort of compendium of all the previous games: it has mechanics and artwork from Super Mario Bros., it has the vegetable carrying/throwing of Super Mario Bros. 2, it has the water spraying and ooze cleaning of Super Mario Sunshine, it has the Bee Life and experimental gravity mini-games of the Super Mario Galaxy titles.

the last world had simple fire puzzles you lighting pyres with your flame in order to open locked doors and passageways just like Zelda.

M64 does have the edge in music, that is for sure. the castle interior theme is so beautiful. the first stage overworld theme gets in my head all the damn time. it's still synthesized jazz. the new games, SMO included, are a little more traditionally orchestrated. i mean, Koji Kondo is a frickin' genius, no way anything can come close to that og stuff.

the song in Super Mario Odyssey that plays when you are in the hat shop reminds me of "Doo Wah Diddy" by Manfred Mann. that's pretty cool.
