Supertato Odyssey

proton, neutron, electron and crouton (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:19 (two years ago) link

i'm a few hours into this now and it's predictably fun though certainly not a reinvention of mario like what they did with zelda

people talked up how this would be the long-awaited proper follow-up to mario 64 or whatever but really it pulls equally from all the past 3d marios - it's got some of the freeform exploration of 64, some of the setpieces and miniaturized challenge areas of galaxy, and some of the gimmickry and mission-style objectives of sunshine

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:20 (two years ago) link

also i love the music in the wooded kingdom, i have no idea how they got from 'woods level' to that but it owns

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:22 (two years ago) link

one of the things that makes 64 the best imo is its physics, how its possible to move super fast and violently through it, which is why its a speedruners fav

lag∞n, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:25 (two years ago) link

cider otm, but the hat flicking and "capture" is so enjoyable and quite new? (i did not play sunshine)

you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:27 (two years ago) link

yeah its definitely more enjoyable than the sunshine water gun but it reminds me of it all the same

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:29 (two years ago) link

xp this one's definitely closer to galaxy in physics than 64, i've never seen sm64's physics "feel" replicated in any other game, by nintendo or not

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:31 (two years ago) link

they shd try to

lag∞n, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:32 (two years ago) link

i def remember running out of water guns in a childhood water fight and saying to a would be participant "hey, why don't you just get a hat and flick it at people maybe?" and then the would be participant kicking my ass

you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:33 (two years ago) link

it's kind of refreshing how little they care about making the moons all big deals to get like the shines/stars in sunshine/galaxy. some of them require navigating a tricky platforming room or beating a boss like in those games but others you can just wander into a barely hidden room or behind a corner or whatever

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:39 (two years ago) link

yeah, and they don't break the flow

you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 27 October 2017 18:44 (two years ago) link

this is better than mario 64. i don't understand how anyone could play this and then pine for mario 64.

whenever you possess something the sudden downgrade in precision of control, the different mode in which these entities exist in the world and different depth of fidelity, is jarring. not necessarily un-fun. but i feel like there's two games at odds with one another, one in which the appeal is that you have this avatar of subtle control and weight and another in which the appeal is MOOO HAAA HAA IM A FUCKEN TYRANNOSAUR

and i think these actively work against each other, at least for me, i am not taken by the novelty of having to switch forms when it means that switching forms is a sudden shift of gears to jankiness. i mean, it's not like it's a bad game. it's like, at least 50% better than shiny entertainment's messiah

capture controls don't bug me too much. the captured seem to have a single desirable ability. the shades guy felt like a joke about this. capturing makes the a mario-kirby hybrid in the end, which is cool. hey wtf are these bunnies, though?

i found a few of the captures fun esp the woodpeckers in the bowser level but agree that most of them are a big downgrade from just being mario

ciderpress, Sunday, 29 October 2017 04:00 (two years ago) link

but you are still mario. you are just possessing each of these creatures and using its one ability to do something mario cannot do on his own.

Of course it's better than Mario 64.

Mario has never controlled better. No third person character has ever controlled better.

What does "unfun, typical platformer shit" mean? xp

abcfsk, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:27 (two years ago) link

It's not a revolution like BOTW, but it expands the ways in which a 3D Mario can operate, without losing the platforming part. Most 3d 'platformers' originating in the 32 bit era are not about platforming but about mucking about looking for shit. This is still about platforming, but allows for a looser structure, more exploration and more freeform platforming than before. Despite the more open nature of the worlds the game has never felt tighter or better paced.

I def factor in the context when rating games like this, one could argue that SMM2 is superior in level design to SMB3 but I’m sorry there is NO comparison... SMB3 was a marvellously innovative achievement, technologically perfect, and was an adventure that spanned many worlds and required a great deal of work to complete. SMM2? You’re building a castle, it feels like you’re on a factory line.

Same goes for Mario 64– it’s gameplay is so incredible, the level design so innovative, it redefined 3D gaming afaik

1 SMB3
2 Mario 64
3 Super Mario World
4 Galaxy 2
5 Galaxy
6 Yoshi’s Island
7 Odyssey
8 SMB
9 SMB 2
10 SMM2
11 Land
12 Land 2

Those are all the ones I’ve played and I enjoy/loved them all. Never played Sunshine, I hear 3D World is amazing. I played the new 2.5D ones and found the controls consistently sluggish. Surprised that people don’t rate the Galaxies higher, surprised that people don’t stan for Land as they should

we have no stan but to choice (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 3 April 2020 19:09 (five months ago) link

a race themed mario wld be sick where like the mario cart crew are doing a season but then they have to have an adventure........idk just spitballin

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:12 (five months ago) link

my ideal mario wld have the speed/movement of 64 w the graphics and creativity of the newer 3d ones

3D world is kinda like that, its got the long jumps, wall kicks, backflips and all that

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:14 (five months ago) link

yeah i havent played that one or galaxy 2 hope they come 2 switch

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:18 (five months ago) link

a thorough remastering of 64 w new levels also shd happen

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:19 (five months ago) link

eh it's not really Nintendo's thing to add new levels to old games, as awesome as that would be

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:22 (five months ago) link

they did it for the ds port

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:23 (five months ago) link

you can't judge SMM2 on the story mode alone. It would be lame to choose Big Ones as your favorite Aerosmith album. But what if the release of Big Ones included all of the tracks, time sliced, allowing you to make your own Even Bigger Ones.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 3 April 2020 19:38 (five months ago) link

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 20:01 (five months ago) link

I'm interested in playing the Galaxy ones but I tried them on the Wii U and they were too hard for me. Kept running out of lives and having to start worlds over until I gave up.

DJI, Friday, 3 April 2020 20:03 (five months ago) link

just

re slog: i felt exactly the same way on the first playthrough, and to some extent the second, but every time i play it i love it more. now i’m somewhere in the teens and i completely lose myself in it. easily the highest replay value of any game i’ve played in years.

re moon currency: utterly otm. it doesn’t feel much like an achievement when you kick a rock MOON, headbutt a seed MOON, walk past a doorway MOON, walk two feet for no reason MOON, blink MOON, and then the difference between 673 moons and 687 moons is essentially negligible.

I may be overrating 64 tbh

idk, I just looked through the list of levels and had some fond memories but also memories of frustration. Which is the hardest Mario, btw? My vote is easily SMW2, the normal game was hard enough, getting 100 on every level to unlock the bonus stages was very difficult, and then, the bonus stages themselves? HA impossible

we have no stan but to choice (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 3 April 2020 22:53 (five months ago) link

The hardest levels I can think of on a Mario game (Lost Levels aside) are the airship in SMB3 world 8 (I'd always P-wing it), Tubular in SMW, the Poochie bonus stage in SMW2, and I have a vague memory of something in Galaxy involving Luigi and a huge airship as being insanely difficult, Galaxy was hard, I remember
