the switch version is supposedly still in development but who knows at this point

it better come out on switch or I will have a personal crisis

so hyped for this

I genuinely appreciate Tim Rogers’ review at Kotaku for preemptively pointing out what every western geek site is going to complain (and be wrong) about regarding this

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:09 (two years ago) link

love this addendum related to that:

the voiceover recording of my @dragonquest xi *Video Review* for @kotaku is 38 minutes long. in an effort to trim it down to under 30 minutes, i am cutting a lot of filler. here's 31 seconds of me talking about my neighbor kid playing the original dragon warrior lol pic.twitter.com/rMe879FUiV

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:12 (two years ago) link

the one thing you can complain about and be right is the music which uses a shitty 90s sounding midi bank instead of a proper orchestral recording (even though one exists) because the DQ composer is a shitty, spiteful person who happens to have total creative control over the series's music

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:19 (two years ago) link

getting really antsy at not being able to play this but i want to wait until after i move and get a new monitor for the optimal visual experience. it looks so pretty in screenshots

gonna start this tonight finally, did anyone else actually end up playing it?

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:00 (one year ago) link

i'm put off by the looking too much like a kid's cartoon thing

thomasintrouble, Sunday, 11 November 2018 09:49 (one year ago) link

i put maybe 40 hours into it right before guilds came out and havent been back. i really, really enjoyed the amount of it i played but i also loved journey of the cursed king which this game is basically the same as. i would recommend you add some of the draconian quest stuff in to make it more interesting, i played with the harder enemies, no running from fights and no xp from weaker enemies ones.

(° . ° )― (Lamp), Monday, 12 November 2018 19:29 (one year ago) link

the boss fights have been about the right level of dangerous so far but i think i must grind regular encounters way less in these games than other people because my final playtimes are always like 10 hours less than people say the game is

ciderpress, Monday, 12 November 2018 20:07 (one year ago) link

i know i know it's dragon quest but this one so far is even more shameless than usual about ticking all the "in every jrpg ever" boxes

ciderpress, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 16:18 (one year ago) link

yeah i imagine thats a large part of the appeal for a lot of players. it certainly was for me. i dont really grind but i can never help myself attempting to 100% games like these and having the draconian quest on made it so the game was still challenging to play

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 19:50 (one year ago) link

switched to this from red dead and it's been just the thing. totally made for small children mindset and i am unapologetically loving it. plus you get little brilliant touches like the magic wielding pig in a black conical hat called a SHAM HATWITCH which is the best.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 01:12 (one year ago) link

playing with exactly the same draconian as lamp did

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 01:12 (one year ago) link

heh this game is way longer than i expected

ciderpress, Saturday, 24 November 2018 19:37 (one year ago) link

Any suggestions for a good strategy guide to use? Is GameFAQS still the best one-stop-shop in the year of our lord 2020? Yes, I'm finally starting this today.

Please note I am really only asking this wussy question because the first time I played through DQ8 I somehow completely missed the monster arena completely and I also barely did anything with the alchemy pot. Obviously this detracts from the fun of the game and my time is limited.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:30 (three months ago) link

nothing in this one is missable, don't bother with a guide imo. when you get to the postgame if you still want to 100% the game thats when you can start looking stuff up

ciderpress, Saturday, 18 July 2020 16:21 (three months ago) link

I ditched the horse almost immediately. Way more fun to stroll around doing pre-emptive strikes as one normally does.

Nice to see the massive number of story events taking place in between countryside grinding sessions. I love these games so much.

The first boss reminded me too much of Dragon Ball Z. Don't put antennae on DQ bad guys, Torayama, we know what you're doing.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 19 July 2020 21:56 (three months ago) link

I'm using a guide to help me optimize my skill point expenditures but ditching the walkthrough based on your advice. Of course my character builder guide says "give Erik boomerang skills" and I am opting for dual-wielding swords anyway because my philosophy says hitting multiple enemies at once is a lie

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 19 July 2020 22:01 (three months ago) link

OK the horse might be boring but I’ll ride any sparkly thing I find in a dungeon, this is too much fun

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 03:06 (two months ago) link

autohorse and autorun

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 03:38 (two months ago) link

i am also dual wielding. I remembered tim rogers recommending it.

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 03:52 (two months ago) link

If there is music in this game that is better than the Hotto town music I’m going to be blown away

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:05 (two months ago) link

Also we must assume that human brain physiology doesn’t work the same in DQverse because if so then giving powerful offensive magic abilities to a person with an under-11 brain is a massive risk, even if they retain all their memories of being 21

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:08 (two months ago) link

“Nose for Treasure” keeps fucking with my OCD and I really need to stop using it

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:24 (two months ago) link

yes that was driving me crazy. now i only care about mini medals though

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 21 July 2020 19:34 (two months ago) link

glorious battle is the only treasure. finally dual wielding knives with erik. it is good.

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 20:27 (two months ago) link

xp thats actually my #1 complaint w/ this game is the soundtrack kinda sucks relative to its contemporaries, even other stuff out of square enix e.g. octopath traveler

there's a couple nice tunes though for the few towns that get their own one instead of the generic town music

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 20:35 (two months ago) link

oh i guess i complained abotu this upthread already lol

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 20:38 (two months ago) link

but can octopath party members be seduced into dancing?

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 21:45 (two months ago) link

no but they can have dancer as a character class

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 21:58 (two months ago) link

this game is def better overall though but the music differential is huge in the other direction imo

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 21:58 (two months ago) link

you are gettin me all pepped up over here

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 22:10 (two months ago) link

I would have a pep power called Hardman Ban, like Poof, except it would always work, and the enemy comes back after three rounds (unless all other enemies are defeated before then). It would require at least one two other party members to also be pepped, doesn't matter who.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 22:33 (two months ago) link

oh hey didnt realise there was a thread. anyway this game’s great. been working my way thru it for a couple of months now. sylvando the true protagonist.

i chose the wrong direction in sniflheim. Did the library and hekswood before talking to queen. Now forced to do it all again.

feels bad

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:33 (three weeks ago) link

game is still wonderful. think i will enjoy an uptick in difficulty with octopath after this one, though.

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:42 (three weeks ago) link

DQ pretends the source material for a subplot is literature. but it is actually ghostbusters 2.

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:45 (three weeks ago) link

oof, i found that bit quite tedious even without having to do it twice. you have a really entertaining section to look forward to soon though

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 27 September 2020 17:12 (three weeks ago) link

this game is such pleasant comfort food, it's nice to come back to it whenever i want a mind balm

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 27 September 2020 17:14 (three weeks ago) link

It is a blessing that you can 'run away' before a battle ever begins

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 17:45 (three weeks ago) link

i chose the wrong direction in sniflheim. Did the library and hekswood before talking to queen. Now forced to do it all again.

ugh, I did this too! I got pretty disenchanted with it all and put the game down for a long time as a result. only recently picked it back up to close the loop and do it a second time. still sucked.

difficulty is def too low. it seems like they didn't get the balance right after dropping random battles. I don't exactly miss those but there isn't any tension in the dungeons anymore.

still, all pretty minor since -

this game is such pleasant comfort food, it's nice to come back to it whenever i want a mind balm

otm. I esp love making camp and forging weapons and tools.

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:03 (three weeks ago) link

if a weapon has lower attack but attacks twice, is it actually higher attack?

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:26 (three weeks ago) link

against an enemy with no defense, yes. vs high enough defense the single bigger hit might do more damage than two smaller ones

ciderpress, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:39 (three weeks ago) link

i dont remember exactly how defense works in this game but thats generally how it goes for multi-hit attacks in these games
