By "online" I don't necessarily mean games that you play online with other people (although, I'm not ruling that out).

In retrospect, one of my dumbest lines ever, and that's STIFF competition.

OLIGARHY (Z S), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 02:56 (sixteen years ago)

sorry guys, moment of doubt, moment of doubt

It took many runs, but finally got 3243m on Canabalt.

I like this one, especially the sound fx and general atmosphere.

Nhex, Friday, 18 September 2009 10:29 (sixteen years ago)

who is going to test this one?

"Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game is created based on a random file on the players computer. If the player kills the alien, the file it is based on is deleted. If the players ship is destroyed, the application itself is deleted.

Although touching aliens will cause the player to lose the game, and killing aliens awards points, the aliens will never actually fire at the player. This calls into question the player's mission, which is never explicitly stated, only hinted at through classic game mechanics. Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land?

Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon an awarded for using it, that doing so is right?

By way of exploring what it means to kill in a video-game, Lose/Lose broaches bigger questions. As technology grows, our understanding of it diminishes, yet, at the same time, it becomes increasingly important in our lives. At what point does our virtual data become as important to us as physical possessions? If we have reached that point already, what real objects do we value less than our data? What implications does trusting something so important to something we understand so poorly have?

KILLING ALIENS IN LOSE/LOSE WILL DELETE FILES ON YOUR HARDDRIVE PERMANANTLY"

Backup - kill a million aliens - restore means you get to be best in the world at a game. Even if it's a stupid shit game, you get to be best in the world. We've got people on here with hands like gnarled claws from trying to get in the top 1000 at Trials HD.

Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land?

This is retarded, btw. Your gun auto-fires. You can't *not* kill aliens. Epic fail.

Mordy, Thursday, 24 September 2009 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

(Also, has anyone tested with a dud computer to see if this actually deletes files? Could be a false claim.)

Mordy, Thursday, 24 September 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

but don't we all have a "gun" with "auto-fire" as we traverse through a "dangerous land"? makes you think...

It's been getting picked up on a lot of blogs this week, and I have to say it's been a pretty fun little game (and for Mac too!) -- Star Guard: http://vacuumflowers.com/star_guard/star_guard.html

Been addicted to the time trial mode for the last few days. I went through the regular single player mode, finally beat level 9 after 50-odd deaths-- I ain't getting through the whole thing on hard mode, that's for sure!

The storytelling/aesthetic reminds me of The Manipulator which was also pretty fun, though SG is more refined.

Nhex, Saturday, 10 October 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
