I was aware of this guy but never took a full dive until I watched his full Doom video earlier tonight. And it was kinda wild how the arc of my opinion of him while watching matched the arc of this thread that I read immediately afterwards.

I drive a lot and have been listening to a ton of Insert Credit recently. For Tim, solely, I’m finding. Guy is sharp and funny. I’m still not sure where he belongs in the bullshitter to savant spectrum, but enjoyable either way.

Brandon S. is fucking insufferable though. “So my number one game of the year is Super Fart Tensei 3. I don’t know, it’s kinda like Sonic Mania. It’s the most Dreamcast game of the year. Like the jumping feels pretty good, the running feels OK. But yeah, it’s bad and super janky. Hehehe. But kind of interesting. I played it for 12 minutes. Hehe. Yeah, that’s my number one.”

It is true, the interplay between them all is what keeps me coming back. It would be too much if it was all Tim. But I do skip the episodes he’s not in.

Jaffe is a great host who knows how and when to interject. Frank is kind of a bore, but I like the museum/history stuff and his barely concealed contempt for most of what Brandon says is really funny. It’s a good sitcom.

Sort of really love how Frank seems to barely have played any games mentioned. I have to be in the mood for Brandon but the recent Tim/Brandon only episode was really, really strong.

I listened to a bit of that end of the year ep, and yeah, Rogers is fast and funny and less affected than his long videos. The other guys, don't know anything about them or why they are in the orbit of this video game savant. The one guy talked about giving "Elden Ring" maybe an hour before giving up, which seems ... short.

Well, Brandon is the co-founder of Insert Credit, which was Tim's first writing gig back in the early 00s. Those guys have been co-conspirators for decades. Not sure where Frank comes in, but I think the work he and Kelsey Lewin are doing with the Videogame History Foundation is super cool. I agree with y'all that Brandon's opinions can be baffling/obnoxious, there was a segment on this week's ep where he was trying to bash the Criterion Channel for being "pretentious;" Tim wasn't having it.

Brandon's upcoming game "Demonschool" has a demo on Steam if the urge strikes you. Looks pretty neat... a retro tactics game with some Persona flavor

I played a little of the demo, it's cool. The combat system is neat, the art & music is beautiful. Every character seems to talk like Brandon, though.

Wow, so apparently Tim abruptly left Insert Credit in what sounds like a particularly nasty way. Bad enough and cruel enough that it sounds like Frank and Brandon are cutting ties with him entirely. Frank more/less calling him a toxic person.

100%. I was expecting him to leave the show at any moment, he hasn’t sounded like he’s wanted to be there for a while now. Shitty he had to do it the way he did though. Guy seems like he’s for sure uhh, got some stuff going on mentally and emotionally.

Also i get the impression he pretty much does nothing put work on his Action Button episodes. I think the next "season" probably won't have long gaps between episodes.

one would hope, considering that the first 7 AB eps came out over a 28 month period, and he's now at 25 months since his last one. Maybe he's gonna pull a lasagna cat and flood the streets all at once, but I'm pretty over his deal at this point.

Strange dude. As much as I've enjoyed a lot of his work, the pompous, contemptuous, negative side of him seemed to be growing. And he's clearly kind of a compulsive liar. Not a new thing, but speaks to the "head case" thing.

The few hour solo hosted "36 Best 360 Games" episode he released right before the announcement was unexpected and I was pretty stoked to see it pop up. I'm not sure what the general consensus is on that, but I found it a little insufferable? Leaned more into the sides of him I don't care for.

Anyway, this isn't a "i never really liked this guy who might be an asshole" thing, just a general recognition of a slide. Won't make excuses for abusive behavior, but he's exuded a "i wish i was dead" aura on the show for the past few months so idk. Feel for his cohosts. Wasn't just a professional relationship.

Was caught of guard by how much this bothered me so spent too much time thinking about it over the last few days. I guess it's because it was becoming harder and harder to ignore how his asshole-ish tendencies really were bothering the other hosts - thought his interactions with Ash Parrish in particularly were a bit ehhh though she handled it well imho. So to have it confirmed that Frank and Brandon (at least) were indeed at the point of 'fuck that guy' reminded me of actually relationships in real life where the wool comes off your eyes and you realise you've been putting up with a real POS for no good reason for a while.

HOWEVER

That's parasocial as fuck? Dude has been unprofessional and a dick to his one-time friends. Who cares, I don't know any of them. Similar here. Got to the point of searching his take on his Discord. I don't know why I bothered to join it... like maybe there was a list of music or something I wanted to see. Anyway I think his side was basically already covered here via Reddit and it's pretty lame. Jaffe is on the server too and was talking some shit about how there aren't really parasocial relationships, that it is just indicative of a lack of "skill" in making someone your friend. That is weird as it implies one would want that. I have no idea who he is other than a guy hosting a podcast I've listened to like 20 episodes of, and who's also annoyed at Tim Rogers.
