it's gonna be a boku no natsuyasumi winter

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 01:24 (three years ago)

Without even crossing the equator. They said it couldn't be done

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 01:26 (three years ago)

have you played one of them before?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 01:30 (three years ago)

Nope. Had heard about the series from Ray Barnholt's enthusiasm for it over the years. It's sweet that he appears in the video.

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 01:36 (three years ago)

"HI TIM!"

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 01:42 (three years ago)

i got it running on openemu, there's a gamefaqs guide that explains what the buttons do but you're on your own dialogue-wise. very attractive game tho

adam, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 10:35 (three years ago)

The tricky thing with a lot of systems from this point is having BIOS files to get anything to run.

And then patching a rom will be another little pain.

To be clear, my Japanese is crap. I was over there two years. Can still read kana pretty quick, but most Chinese characters..fuhgeddaboutit

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 11:06 (three years ago)

four months pass...

I was aware of this guy but never took a full dive until I watched his full Doom video earlier tonight. And it was kinda wild how the arc of my opinion of him while watching matched the arc of this thread that I read immediately afterwards.

Our greatest critic of the medium at work today

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Saturday, 18 February 2023 06:56 (three years ago)

Tim is definitely an arc

two months pass...

I drive a lot and have been listening to a ton of Insert Credit recently. For Tim, solely, I’m finding. Guy is sharp and funny. I’m still not sure where he belongs in the bullshitter to savant spectrum, but enjoyable either way.

Brandon S. is fucking insufferable though. “So my number one game of the year is Super Fart Tensei 3. I don’t know, it’s kinda like Sonic Mania. It’s the most Dreamcast game of the year. Like the jumping feels pretty good, the running feels OK. But yeah, it’s bad and super janky. Hehehe. But kind of interesting. I played it for 12 minutes. Hehe. Yeah, that’s my number one.”

I want to shove him down a toilet.

circa1916, Saturday, 22 April 2023 16:37 (three years ago)

you shoving him dowm a toilet is his game of the year, though

Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 22 April 2023 16:41 (three years ago)

lol. At times you can practically hear the others biting their tongues with some of the dumb shit Tim and Brandon say. Best thing about that show.

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 22 April 2023 17:17 (three years ago)

xp lmao

It is true, the interplay between them all is what keeps me coming back. It would be too much if it was all Tim. But I do skip the episodes he’s not in.

Jaffe is a great host who knows how and when to interject. Frank is kind of a bore, but I like the museum/history stuff and his barely concealed contempt for most of what Brandon says is really funny. It’s a good sitcom.

circa1916, Saturday, 22 April 2023 17:45 (three years ago)

That all sounds so great, will listen

hrep (H.P), Sunday, 23 April 2023 01:35 (three years ago)

Sort of really love how Frank seems to barely have played any games mentioned. I have to be in the mood for Brandon but the recent Tim/Brandon only episode was really, really strong.

bain4z, Monday, 24 April 2023 08:31 (three years ago)

I listened to a bit of that end of the year ep, and yeah, Rogers is fast and funny and less affected than his long videos. The other guys, don't know anything about them or why they are in the orbit of this video game savant. The one guy talked about giving "Elden Ring" maybe an hour before giving up, which seems ... short.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 April 2023 11:09 (three years ago)

Well, Brandon is the co-founder of Insert Credit, which was Tim's first writing gig back in the early 00s. Those guys have been co-conspirators for decades. Not sure where Frank comes in, but I think the work he and Kelsey Lewin are doing with the Videogame History Foundation is super cool. I agree with y'all that Brandon's opinions can be baffling/obnoxious, there was a segment on this week's ep where he was trying to bash the Criterion Channel for being "pretentious;" Tim wasn't having it.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 27 April 2023 13:11 (three years ago)

oh dear god this new episode. oh god.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 28 April 2023 02:01 (three years ago)

Read that and thought there was a new Action Button review for a second. On Tim's current schedule we're not due another for around...five months or so?

"Spaghetti" Thompson (Pheeel), Friday, 28 April 2023 20:50 (three years ago)

just tim timming all over the latest podcast, in post. use caution if you like tim rogers.

i will probably finish it. it's just so ludicrous. Frank's audio is missing, and so he fills in the spaces in the conversation from his famously great memory.

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 29 April 2023 02:20 (three years ago)

Loved that episode and all the credit in the world to editor esper for making it even slightly comprehensible

Potemkin Mystery Dungeon (Will M.), Sunday, 30 April 2023 00:51 (three years ago)

Yahueh!

This sounds amusing, looking forward to it.

circa1916, Sunday, 30 April 2023 01:24 (three years ago)

Brandon's upcoming game "Demonschool" has a demo on Steam if the urge strikes you. Looks pretty neat... a retro tactics game with some Persona flavor

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 May 2023 18:18 (three years ago)

I played a little of the demo, it's cool. The combat system is neat, the art & music is beautiful. Every character seems to talk like Brandon, though.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Monday, 8 May 2023 15:23 (three years ago)

I mean this without any disrespect, it’s great whatever way, but Frank’s podcast Video Game History Hour is fantastic to fall asleep to.

Wow, so apparently Tim abruptly left Insert Credit in what sounds like a particularly nasty way. Bad enough and cruel enough that it sounds like Frank and Brandon are cutting ties with him entirely. Frank more/less calling him a toxic person.

Real bummer.

circa1916, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:22 (one year ago)

I like his content and I understand being bummed about this.

But also looooollll I can so easily imagine him being, uh, difficult.

default damager (lukas), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:32 (one year ago)

for sure openly a headcase

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:36 (one year ago)

he should make more action button episodes now that he has some free time

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:37 (one year ago)

100%. I was expecting him to leave the show at any moment, he hasn’t sounded like he’s wanted to be there for a while now. Shitty he had to do it the way he did though. Guy seems like he’s for sure uhh, got some stuff going on mentally and emotionally.

circa1916, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:41 (one year ago)

yeah i never listened to much insert credit but it didn't take much to notice his lack of respect for the other guys was very thinly veiled

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:43 (one year ago)

I check out his Twitch streams a bit but they've been kind of a downer lately..

Also i get the impression he pretty much does nothing put work on his Action Button episodes. I think the next "season" probably won't have long gaps between episodes.

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:49 (one year ago)

one would hope, considering that the first 7 AB eps came out over a 28 month period, and he's now at 25 months since his last one. Maybe he's gonna pull a lasagna cat and flood the streets all at once, but I'm pretty over his deal at this point.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:59 (one year ago)

hard to argue. should we change thread title? lol

looking forward to seeing whatever the heck though

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 17:00 (one year ago)

Damn, I'm kinda surprised and bummed to hear about this. I always kinda thought his dickishness to Frank and Brandon was a bit, and that they got along off mic. Shows what I know!

lol, thread locked with all comments deleted except a few screenshots of Tim's defense of himself from discord that don't exactly make him come off well.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 21:10 (one year ago)

All he wanted was the right to suddenly quit, not respond to texts, and be given two weeks or so to mull over what else to maybe say.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 21:22 (one year ago)

Strange dude. As much as I've enjoyed a lot of his work, the pompous, contemptuous, negative side of him seemed to be growing. And he's clearly kind of a compulsive liar. Not a new thing, but speaks to the "head case" thing.

The few hour solo hosted "36 Best 360 Games" episode he released right before the announcement was unexpected and I was pretty stoked to see it pop up. I'm not sure what the general consensus is on that, but I found it a little insufferable? Leaned more into the sides of him I don't care for.

Anyway, this isn't a "i never really liked this guy who might be an asshole" thing, just a general recognition of a slide. Won't make excuses for abusive behavior, but he's exuded a "i wish i was dead" aura on the show for the past few months so idk. Feel for his cohosts. Wasn't just a professional relationship.

circa1916, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 06:26 (one year ago)

Was caught of guard by how much this bothered me so spent too much time thinking about it over the last few days. I guess it's because it was becoming harder and harder to ignore how his asshole-ish tendencies really were bothering the other hosts - thought his interactions with Ash Parrish in particularly were a bit ehhh though she handled it well imho. So to have it confirmed that Frank and Brandon (at least) were indeed at the point of 'fuck that guy' reminded me of actually relationships in real life where the wool comes off your eyes and you realise you've been putting up with a real POS for no good reason for a while.

HOWEVER

That's parasocial as fuck? Dude has been unprofessional and a dick to his one-time friends. Who cares, I don't know any of them. Unless more info comes out, is it naive to say that this is none of my business as an audience member and I can go on enjoying the output from both sides of this divorce?

mediumrarexxl, Friday, 1 November 2024 11:51 (one year ago)

Similar here. Got to the point of searching his take on his Discord. I don't know why I bothered to join it... like maybe there was a list of music or something I wanted to see. Anyway I think his side was basically already covered here via Reddit and it's pretty lame. Jaffe is on the server too and was talking some shit about how there aren't really parasocial relationships, that it is just indicative of a lack of "skill" in making someone your friend. That is weird as it implies one would want that. I have no idea who he is other than a guy hosting a podcast I've listened to like 20 episodes of, and who's also annoyed at Tim Rogers.

I barely game and am probably about done with both sides of this divorce. I did stumble across the fact that Action Button started as a mobile game dev and made my favourite iPhone game ever, though ("Ziggurat") so this is a point for. Had no idea that was Tim.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 1 November 2024 12:05 (one year ago)

Tim's on Twitch doing his weekly Action Button thing. Got all serious for a minute and said he needed to make a statement about everything that's been going on this week. Turned it into a gag and announced that he's kinda into the Venom movies. Alex Jaffe (!?) is on there now and they're joking around about superhero movies like they're best buds and everything's cool.

I have no idea what's going on here lol.

circa1916, Saturday, 2 November 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

podcasters should having a cooling off period before they go public with their drama

lag∞n, Saturday, 2 November 2024 00:04 (one year ago)

They may be physically incapable of stepping away for a minute

circa1916, Saturday, 2 November 2024 00:05 (one year ago)

yeah lol

lag∞n, Saturday, 2 November 2024 00:06 (one year ago)

I'm reading this, maybe too cynically, as Tim flattering up Alex (who I never gathered as being a genuine buddy of Tim's) in the wake of this to have him on his Twitch stream to make him look totally cool and chill.

I would like to think Alex isn't that dumb and pathetic and I'm totally missing some information here, but it certainly presents as a wtf thing to do right now.

"Step away for a minute" OTM

circa1916, Saturday, 2 November 2024 00:42 (one year ago)

five months pass...

After over 2.5 years since the last upload, Action Button has returned as the long rumored LA Noire video is finally premiering with a stream on YouTube and it’s apparently 9 hours long?

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Monday, 21 April 2025 01:58 (one year ago)

ha noticed this pattern with other pods/youtubers where they keep getting longer and less frequent the last fall of civilizations took forever to come out then it was 7 hours on the mongols, guess its cool theyre digging so deep
