Mapping the n64 c-buttons to the right analog stick feels...hostile

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 26 October 2021 17:45 (four years ago)

Starfox 64 is still magical, takes me right back to the Target demo. Just need some strangers to stand uncomfortably close behind me, waiting for their turn.

64 is the only starfox that holds up

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 19:01 (four years ago)

enjoying Unpacking

nxd, Thursday, 4 November 2021 16:36 (four years ago)

i saw that. it looks a lot like a chore!

koogs, Friday, 5 November 2021 11:03 (four years ago)

(but interesting design-wise and i like the way it looks)

koogs, Friday, 5 November 2021 11:04 (four years ago)

My favorite part of the @UnpackingALife game is how you can create highly competitive stuffy sports tournaments with the replay feature. pic.twitter.com/wxF5GWewsF

Kinda torn about whether I REALLY want to play that game or REALLY want to avoid it

Nhex, Friday, 5 November 2021 12:28 (four years ago)

i'm playing that game irl right now, without the stuffy sports tournament

just staying (Karl Malone), Friday, 5 November 2021 15:15 (four years ago)

it's p relaxing tbf, helped by a calming soundtrack

nxd, Friday, 5 November 2021 16:17 (four years ago)

64 is the only starfox that holds up

I rank SNES Starfox just as highly. In general Starfox is my favourite genre of game that basically only exists in the form of two excellent games and the awful Wii U one

Also I did play Starfox 2 on my SNES mini and won it first try, it was really weird and boring

I’m curious if I should get Disco Elysium for Switch… I do not like load screens

took me a while to realize what he meant by stuffy

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Saturday, 6 November 2021 04:17 (four years ago)

disappointing to heat about the ocarina of time bugs on switch. has anyone played it? is it still playable anyway?

― flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, November 5, 2021 8:14 PM (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink

it has a lot of load screens (though apparently that's an issue across platforms) and is pretty buggy/laggy but you should get it, it rules

na (NA), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 16:19 (four years ago)

I am feeling like there is a PS4 and/or PS5 in my future. I'm craving more Souls games-- I've only played DS1 on Switch. I'll probably wait to do Disco Elysium once I finally break and pick one up

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 17:39 (four years ago)

Just finished my first run on Monster Train and really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended for fellow Slay the Spire obsessives.

cwkiii, Saturday, 13 November 2021 19:35 (four years ago)

i can't imagine playing disco elysium on that tiny screen, hope you don't have switch lite

excited for outer wilds to come to switch, i briefly had it for PC but it was essentially unplayable with keyboard and mouse

global tetrahedron, Monday, 15 November 2021 17:14 (four years ago)

Just started playing A Short Hike, it's such a delight -- and a *good game* too, not just "I HAVE QUIRKY 16-BIT GRAPHICS YOU MUST LOVE ME"

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:20 (four years ago)

That seems like just the sort of game the Switch is made for.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:29 (four years ago)

yeh it's super

think i forgot to do the little side missions tho

nxd, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:36 (four years ago)

Just bought a Switch. First console in aeons. Recommendations?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:03 (four years ago)

Zelda Breath of the Wild without a doubt. I just started it again for the third time and it's just total joy.

nate woolls, Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:05 (four years ago)

must-haves:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Metroid Dread

other Mario games:

Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

indie games that are also available on other platforms but are worth checking out:

Hades
Celeste

aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:37 (four years ago)

If you like anime/turn-based RPGs at all, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an absolute must-have

Nhex, Sunday, 21 November 2021 02:15 (four years ago)

I highly recommend Hollow Knight and Dead Cells.

cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 04:05 (four years ago)

those 3 must-haves are the games i'm buying a switch for. + ring fit.

adam t. (abanana), Sunday, 21 November 2021 06:24 (four years ago)

Metroid is great but it’s tense! Reminded me of playing resident evil 1 when I was a teen. Lotta jump scares

Agree on the must-haves so far. Goose game, short hike, and Inside are good smaller-scale indies. Snipper clips is a great two-player

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:04 (four years ago)

the real must haves

breath of the wild 2
mario galaxy 2

cmon nintendo! i must have these

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:13 (four years ago)

if it's your only console you'll be overwhelmed with options
make an account with deku deals, bookmark interesting suggestions and wait until they're for sale for less than a fiver or at a significant discount

if you have other consoles or a pc then only bother with the switch exclusives or stuff you'd rather play portable because the switch versions are typically the worst

my picks: SMT V and Fire Emblem: 3 Houses

chihuahuau, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:17 (four years ago)

smtv will probably not be exclusive forever, though

chihuahuau, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:19 (four years ago)

With the exception of breath of the wild and maybe hollow Knight, which is a bargain always, my recommendation is to only buy things on sale. that will limit your consumption, and breath of the wild and hollow Knight will give you dozens of hours of enjoyment as you accumulate things at a reasonable pace.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:02 (four years ago)

I enjoyed the Switch Paper Mario, and am enjoying The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - though if you've not played the original Ace Attorney Trilogy, that's available as well (and great).

This is obviously veeery niche, but Murder By Numbers is basically what if Ace Attorney but Picross?

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:28 (four years ago)

the real must haves

mario galaxy 2

cmon nintendo! i must have these

― lag∞n, Sunday, November 21, 2021 10:13 AM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

i meant super mario odyssey 2 but they should release galaxy 2 for the switch as well

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:31 (four years ago)

i don't want odyssey 2 i want a new mario paradigm

ciderpress, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:34 (four years ago)

i wish to jump on the hat more love jumping on the hat baby baby

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:36 (four years ago)

how did we even play mario without the hat, hat is life

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:38 (four years ago)

super mario densetsu

ciderpress, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:39 (four years ago)

i've just remembered there's a 3d kirby game coming out, that will be acceptable for now

ciderpress, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:40 (four years ago)

the pink man, the round one

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:41 (four years ago)

With the exception of breath of the wild and maybe hollow Knight, which is a bargain always, my recommendation is to only buy things on sale.

This seems like very obvious advice, but seconding it anyway. Checking Deku Deals has become a daily ritual for me, and I quickly realized after making a few unwise, full price purchases when I first bought my Switch, that there are so many great games that you can probably pick up something worthwhile for cheap at any given time.

Today I noticed the GameStop Black Friday sale, so I ordered Xenoblade Chronicles and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I already have a backlog of games but whatever.

cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 18:35 (four years ago)

I picked up Paper Mario: Origami King for myself and Xenoblade for a friend in that sale. $26 is pretty much as cheap as first party Nintendo gets nowadays, especially for physical copies

Nhex, Monday, 22 November 2021 13:13 (four years ago)

would paper mario be good for a seven-year-old who gets frustrated whenever games get "too hard" or should i go with yoshi's crafted world instead? i know YKW has two-player mode which is a positive bc then i can help her through the game

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:01 (four years ago)

I haven't played either of those, but to throw out another recommendation, my five-year-old is hooked on Pikmin 3; the puzzles can get a little tricky for her at times, but there is also a two-player mode.

cwkiii, Monday, 22 November 2021 17:04 (four years ago)

thanks! she always wants to play untitled goose game in 2-player mode but i find that pretty annoying to play in 2-player mode. so we mostly play a lot of mario party.

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:07 (four years ago)

hit me up for online mario party sometime NA! i love it

just staying (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:20 (four years ago)

OK!

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:26 (four years ago)

Yoshi’s Crafted World has a mode that makes the game much easier. You can infinitely hover, basically fly, so the jump puzzles are way more forgiving. I had a great time playing co-op with my then 7 year-old. We recently tried another play through in normal mode, but she got impatient with my poor playing and moved onto a different game.

beard papa, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 07:37 (four years ago)

Speaking of which, there are apparently a bunch of Nintendo games for under $30 at Gamestop and Amazon, possibly other places. That almost *never* happens. Like, "Breath of the Wild" for $26? Bargain.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:30 (four years ago)

bargain for the three people that own a switch but not that game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:46 (four years ago)

I’m one of those three. I don’t buy physical, though.
