Oh he has a bad rep?

nah i think everyones just tired of his stuff getting linked constantly. especially as some sort of referendum on the quality of a game when he's often specifically seeking out janky bits to make his vids funny

I have a suspicion he seeks out or emphasizes janky bits because ... yeah, it's funny! Certainly encouraged by the way people customize or hack so many games. And certainly no worse than not funny folks ripping on a game for, like, inconsistent frame rates. Besides, he can be just as funny playing with a game's built in mechanics, like his Dark Souls videos or Breath of the Wild, where esp. in the latter he's hilariously riffing on or reveling in the game's possibilities.
Regardless, I don't think he seriously offers "referendums" on anything, or if he does, it's infrequent. It's almost always with a wink.

his dark souls vids are hilarious
― calstars, Sunday, 17 October 2021 17:16 (two years ago) link
i do like dunkey fwiw but he's been doing the same shtick for a long time now and i don't need or want to see every single one of his vids/takes
― ciderpress, Sunday, 17 October 2021 17:25 (two years ago) link
Yeah I dont take his actual "reviews" seriously, he definitely misrepresents the games for entertainment value same as his normal videos. They always come down to "here's another funny video where I go out of my way to make a game look silly and broken, but this time I'm gonna use my serious voice and act like you can expect the entire game to be like this and everyone on social media is gonna take my word for it"
And I only really value his opinions on platformers because that seems to be the only genre he actually likes

Guy has his own school of criticism huh
― calstars, Sunday, 17 October 2021 18:34 (two years ago) link
you should feel bad for liking him calstars
jk he's very popular here and i like his videos
― ✖, Sunday, 17 October 2021 18:39 (two years ago) link
Aw, as someone who tries hard to play games without interacting with gamer culture, I enjoy his stuff as it’s so freaking basic, and he doesn’t do that whole nihilist fake adult swim vibe that seems to be in most games “humour” videos
― Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:31 (two years ago) link
But I get that he could be too much of a so-so thing.
― Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:32 (two years ago) link
He's always in character to some extent so I know to not really take any of his criticisms too seriously.
The funniest thing I've seen involving him recently was when he was watching the last big direct and they announced the Mario Movie cast... it was as if the universe made its own Dunkey video without his involvement and then showed it to him for him to approve.

Omg I didn’t know about any of that casting outside of Chris Pratt. I kinda love it tbh.

Dunkey enunciates like he's delivering a monologue at the Stratford Festival but with a vape shop cashier's accent

He also has a video about "illogical" game pricing which JiC must love.

Heh, I think I posted it.

finally got one of these, primarily for BOTW. really slick, impressive piece of technology
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 21 October 2021 16:26 (two years ago) link
congrats! worth it for BOTW alone tbh
― Evan, Thursday, 21 October 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link
the oled one looks even more slick but i dont think i can justify buying another, will hope the switch 2 has oled from day 1
― ciderpress, Thursday, 21 October 2021 17:24 (two years ago) link
since i went in cold, i thought i'd save 50 bucks and go for the medium tier one. now i am left wishing i had a bigger screen, but eh. i also don't think i felt like hunting around for the OLED (just let me think the supply chain has wrecked distribution for that model, thanks)
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 22 October 2021 15:30 (two years ago) link
the base switch screen is still a good quality panel, they didn't cheap out there, oled is just very deluxe
― ciderpress, Friday, 22 October 2021 16:06 (two years ago) link
I have purchased the expansion bc I am weak. Holiday travel with OoT impossible to resist. Must know if Starfox holds up.

Mapping the n64 c-buttons to the right analog stick feels...hostile

Starfox 64 is still magical, takes me right back to the Target demo. Just need some strangers to stand uncomfortably close behind me, waiting for their turn.
― John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 26 October 2021 17:47 (two years ago) link
64 is the only starfox that holds up
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 19:01 (two years ago) link
enjoying Unpacking
― nxd, Thursday, 4 November 2021 16:36 (two years ago) link
i saw that. it looks a lot like a chore!
― koogs, Friday, 5 November 2021 11:03 (two years ago) link
(but interesting design-wise and i like the way it looks)

My favorite part of the @UnpackingALife game is how you can create highly competitive stuffy sports tournaments with the replay feature. pic.twitter.com/wxF5GWewsF— Mescad (@mescad) November 4, 2021

Kinda torn about whether I REALLY want to play that game or REALLY want to avoid it
― Nhex, Friday, 5 November 2021 12:28 (two years ago) link
i'm playing that game irl right now, without the stuffy sports tournament
― just staying (Karl Malone), Friday, 5 November 2021 15:15 (two years ago) link
it's p relaxing tbf, helped by a calming soundtrack
― nxd, Friday, 5 November 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link
I rank SNES Starfox just as highly. In general Starfox is my favourite genre of game that basically only exists in the form of two excellent games and the awful Wii U one
Also I did play Starfox 2 on my SNES mini and won it first try, it was really weird and boring
I’m curious if I should get Disco Elysium for Switch… I do not like load screens

took me a while to realize what he meant by stuffy

disappointing to heat about the ocarina of time bugs on switch. has anyone played it? is it still playable anyway?

it has a lot of load screens (though apparently that's an issue across platforms) and is pretty buggy/laggy but you should get it, it rules

I am feeling like there is a PS4 and/or PS5 in my future. I'm craving more Souls games-- I've only played DS1 on Switch. I'll probably wait to do Disco Elysium once I finally break and pick one up

Just finished my first run on Monster Train and really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended for fellow Slay the Spire obsessives.
― cwkiii, Saturday, 13 November 2021 19:35 (two years ago) link
i can't imagine playing disco elysium on that tiny screen, hope you don't have switch lite
excited for outer wilds to come to switch, i briefly had it for PC but it was essentially unplayable with keyboard and mouse
― global tetrahedron, Monday, 15 November 2021 17:14 (two years ago) link
Just started playing A Short Hike, it's such a delight -- and a *good game* too, not just "I HAVE QUIRKY 16-BIT GRAPHICS YOU MUST LOVE ME"
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:20 (two years ago) link
That seems like just the sort of game the Switch is made for.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link
yeh it's super
think i forgot to do the little side missions tho

Zelda Breath of the Wild without a doubt. I just started it again for the third time and it's just total joy.

If you like anime/turn-based RPGs at all, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an absolute must-have
― Nhex, Sunday, 21 November 2021 02:15 (two years ago) link
I highly recommend Hollow Knight and Dead Cells.
― cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 04:05 (two years ago) link
those 3 must-haves are the games i'm buying a switch for. + ring fit.

Metroid is great but it’s tense! Reminded me of playing resident evil 1 when I was a teen. Lotta jump scaresAgree on the must-haves so far. Goose game, short hike, and Inside are good smaller-scale indies. Snipper clips is a great two-player
