I enjoyed hole.io a lot. Probably too much. I was meant to do some work today.

*shakes fist at ledge* (but thank you)

scampus unrest (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 30 June 2021 15:44 (four years ago)

Wait, it isn't hole.io, it is hole-io dot com. Looking forward to the .io being some dodgy porn site that I've now said I enjoy a lot on the internet.

Luckily I am way too bad at the bouncy ball golf game to get addicted to that but it's a pleasingly simple concept.

scampus unrest (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 30 June 2021 15:46 (four years ago)

oh man a friend and i went head to head on hole.io big time when it came out on mobile, whenever that was. good times

wow, hole-io is very very compelling

goddammit. now i'm a double silver star. if anyone sees a giant karl malone on there, that's me. i'm getting pretty good at "Classic" mode - I almost always get 10 or 20 stars

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 19:54 (four years ago)

:(

I just realized I've been playing most bots, probably. every time i start near other "players", i notice almost all of them make a straight bee-line toward something, instead of exploring the surrounding area for the smallest objects (a strategy that leads to victory almost every time). speaking of "victory almost every time", i'm starting to become suspicious that....sigh

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 22:14 (four years ago)

however i will continue destroying these bots until i am triple silver star.

for tonight.

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 22:15 (four years ago)

there's a solo mode which is just you against the scenery.

i find some scenes have nothing small and you really struggle to get started. and when you are large it gets laggy. maybe I'm just terrible.

koogs, Saturday, 3 July 2021 22:48 (four years ago)

no, those are problems for me too. the bot theory is helpful actually, i'd wondered about those mysterious high-speed bee-lines towards stuff. but hey, computer opponents have been a mainstay of video games since the golden age. just think of them like the ghosts in pac-man and enjoy the loop of chomping stuff and getting bigger.

Bobo Honk, real name, no gimmicks (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 July 2021 13:02 (four years ago)

It is pretty easy to win unless you get born somewhere with no small stuff but yeah still satisfying. Solo mode is harder, best I've managed is about 75% but I've only tried two or three times.

In the wastelands of Birmingham and Manchester, massages are back (ledge), Sunday, 4 July 2021 13:28 (four years ago)

i got to the 80% threshold, but it's VERY map-dependent. like what you want is to be in one of the maps with a ton of marsh grass and bamboo to just chow down on at the beginning.

Bobo Honk, real name, no gimmicks (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 July 2021 15:18 (four years ago)

yeah, there's one map where the little marsh grass is actually worth +2 at the beginning, while the bigger trees and things like that you can barely swallow are only +1

and there's another map where I can't seem to get past 30% no matter what.

one suggestion for this game is that they could put the title of the map somewhere when you play it! if you're playing on rando, sometimes it's tough to know where you actually are.

i did submit a tip to the developer and asked them about the possibility of creating private rooms, or somewhere where you could count on more humans

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Sunday, 4 July 2021 15:20 (four years ago)

the maps have titles on the maps page. pretty generic though. sci-fi. vikings. japan...

the sci fi one looks like it has lots of large buildings but they are actually prefabs, made up of smaller blocks, which slip down nicely.

koogs, Sunday, 4 July 2021 15:27 (four years ago)

i appreciate the No Sound aesthetic, too

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Sunday, 4 July 2021 15:30 (four years ago)

it's a lesson that should apply to book covers, too - if you don't have any good ideas for what it should be, it's almost better to just go with nothing at all

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Sunday, 4 July 2021 15:30 (four years ago)

Japan seemed easier, always something small nearby. got 80 something percent on solo a couple of times.

koogs, Sunday, 4 July 2021 21:43 (four years ago)

the other thing this BADLY needs is a mini-map. doesn't need to be, and probably shouldn't be, "live" ... but being able to know at a glance whether you're heading towards viable terrain or the bottom right corner of the map would be really nice.

The games that are free on GOG: https://www.gog.com/partner/stay_at_home

I can recommend Flight of the Amazon Queen, Beneath a Steel Sky (last two both SCUMM games), Samorost, Treasure Adventure Game

Syndicate Plus and Syndicate Wars also currently 100% off (which I guess is different to free which is why they're not showing on that list?).

Always impressed with how much people can squeeze out of the Pico-8 system, this one is playable in the browser and if you like trains;

Cab Ride

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Wednesday, 27 October 2021 14:36 (four years ago)

Actually realised that's the previous version, if you hunt down the cart on the Pico-9 website you'll get the most recent one which features more stuff.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Wednesday, 27 October 2021 14:55 (four years ago)

(i need to finish the one i'm in the middle of, but i'm slightly bored of it and i don't see why anyone would play it when they could be playing anything else. also need to finish the one before that...)

been meaning to up load a fun level I designed for this, because of the film Dune right now. This is a well done reworking of the classic real time strategy game (original?!?) Dune 2 for the PC, this fan made re-design operates very differently to the original but it keeps the same everything else, style of graphics, sounds, etc. I enjoyed it as a fan of the original but don't know if it is appealing to new players? One for the retro gamers and dune fans, at least.
