I don't understand how this game works. It's 1 vs. 100, but thousands of people are playing. I was clearly in the top 3 in my group of 100, and beat the guy who was "the one", but lost to someone who wasn't in my group for the prizes. So clearly the prizes are given only to the top 3 among the thousands. Do the people in other groups play against the same "one", though? It seems like it, given that the host guy can't possibly be doing live v.o. for a bunch of different contestants.

could be more then one v.o. guy. agree that it'd be better if you could see how everyone is doing in the mob since that's your competition. it's still fun though.

bnw, Sunday, 12 July 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure there's only one V.O. guy.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 12 July 2009 08:45 (sixteen years ago)

There's the one, then the "mob" (which makes up the 100), then the "crowd", which is all the other thousands of people. Chances are you've just not been in the mob yet, they get chosen from the crowd pretty randomly (although I think they take into account how well you're playing as a member of the crowd too).

Don't think you can get prizes as part of the crowd, except that every right answer wins you another entry into a prize sweepstake or something. Still, to get anything proper you need to be in the mob (and even then I think you can only win gamerpoints and XBLA games). To win anything really proper you need to be the one.

JimD, Sunday, 12 July 2009 13:04 (sixteen years ago)

You get prizes in the crowd if you're in the top three at the top of each round... which means you scored highest of 48 K people. Kinda unlikely.
Everybody gets microsoft points or arcade games, that's pretty much it.

Why? I forget what biologists have suggested. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 July 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

If people are chosen based on their prior performance, how do they miss such easy fucking questions.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 12 July 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, unless they start picking people who can cruise through the first six questions and getting somewhat more intelligent mob members (25 didn't know what a crepe was?) this game is not going to be worth playing.

I only wish I ws good at it

This is why I didn't buy it. If you can't beat the trial level, there really isn't much point buying levels that follow it.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 13 July 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

One of the cool features of the XBLA version is being able to watch the top player replays. It definitely helped me a lot with being able to figure out the chaining system and to learn some techniques to improve my game. I never put the time into learning the whole game though (just to the third level). It's sort of the peak of the STG genre in terms of complexity and difficulty (especially if you're playing for score), but also the peak in beauty too. Watching somebody beat the final levels and bosses w/o dying is mind blowing stuff.

i asked this on the Farcry/Crisis/Etc. thread, but i think it sank into oblivion already - anyone else playing Far Cry 2? I really like it so far. Also, if anyone has actually played Fuel (despite its dire dire reviews) i would be curious what they thought because the demo seemed really fun.

not so keen on the ghostbusters demo tho. the complaints about spending lots of time reviving yer famous inept buddies seems OTM.

I really hated the Fuel demo AND the Ghostbusters demo.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 13 July 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

I really want to play Farcry 2, but haven't gotten a chance yet.

Mordy, Monday, 13 July 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

my only real beef w/Fuel demo is the fact that riding a motorcycle into shrubs and trees should um probably have some effect on me? Appears that the collision detection is not really happening for the foliage in most of the free ride areas, which is dumb.

Ok, I got Farcry 2. I will update as I play!

Mordy, Monday, 13 July 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

cool! started posting about it here The Crysis/Far Cry/Crytek-in-general thread.

its really pretty challenging, which is refreshing after lots of no consequence hey charge in and spray bullets stuff, but does so w/o becoming yet another infuriating (blarrrgghhh. yawn.) "stealth game".

It's got a whole identity in the dick (jjjusten), Monday, 13 July 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

in old game news, nothing in the world is as satisfying as tearing around pointlessly for hours on a motorcycle in burnout: paradise. that game rocks so hard.

Monkey island was boring me to death, I think. I'm not cut out for that style of "game".

genereal disease (jjjusten), Saturday, 8 August 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

hey holy shit, i just got selected to be in the mob!

genereal disease (jjjusten), Sunday, 9 August 2009 01:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh you cashed out you piece of shit cunt motherfucker aaaagggggggghhhh

genereal disease (jjjusten), Sunday, 9 August 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Ouch. I was playing last night (UK tho), and one of the Ones got down to 3 remaining mob members, which is apparently the best anyone's ever managed. Can't remember what she actually won after all that, but it was almost nothing. Seems increasingly apparent that your chances of winning anything are tiny, and if you do win something it's unlikely to be worth more than about a fiver. But I'm still finding it fun.

JimD, Sunday, 9 August 2009 08:27 (sixteen years ago)

She didn't get anything, she got the answer wrong (the one about which ghetto Schindler's List was set in, I think). I was egging her on to win.

I like playing this, but the "superhard" game isn't all that great, a third of the questions were about alpine skiing and at least 4 were "Who won the Master's cup in 19xx?". I think they must compile that one from the answers everyone gets wrong in the other games.

so for watching movies you've downloaded on your tv via your xbox, what's the best solution? the one time I tried before my memory is that watching stuff over your network or whatever is awful and just not possible, I used a friend's external hard drive instead and connected that to the xbox and that was fine.

but I have no usb stick or ext hard drive....

External hard drive is how I do it, although I successfully watched one via USB Flash memory as well.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

weird...this time around the streaming over the network is working perfectly. does it like some file types more than others?

I stream everything over wifi and it's generally pretty fantastic, as long as I stick to SD. Which isn't a problem given that I'm mostly watching old Doctor Whos. I'm wired from my server to my router though, then wireless to the 360. Would no doubt be a lot more sketchy if both connections were wifi.

You do have to download an upgrade in order to play AVIs. Otherwise it should work for most normal types.

9/10 for this week's Trials HD release...

Apparently there's even a way to get it to recognize .srt subtitle files, but I've yet to delve into the facts on that one.

The controls are janky (Will M.), Monday, 10 August 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

great update to xbox live. games on demand is gonna make me very poor. and insta-netflix is much improved.

bnw, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

anyone picking up trials?

cozwn (webinar), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, got bored of it very quickly on steam. It's just too frustrating.

JimD, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know about the us prices but games-on-demand here looks way too expensive to be useful

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the prices for games on demand seems way too high, given the present used market. I get that this is a way for game companies to eliminate the used market (and borrowing and renting too). But I don't see this taking off at this price point. On the other hand, I'm shocked at how low iPhone game prices are. I bought Civ:Rev last summer for US $60. I bought a close-out copy for my brother for $30 a few months later, feeling a little silly at myself for my impatience. Then I bought it for DS two months ago, used, for I think $14. Now it's available for iPhone for $5. And they're all basically the same game (the DS version doesn't have the civilopedia and the iPhone version doesn't have multiplayer).

deep olives (Euler), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

I bought the hell out of Trial HD this morning, cozwn. Played through about half(!) the content. It starts out VERY easy. You have to unlock the medium difficulty stuff for a halfway challenge. Doesn't seem as hard as the PC game, maybe because there's more easy tracks (than were originally released on PC). I imagine the hard and extreme tracks will offer plenty of frustrating challenge though, but I've yet to unlock either. The mini-game stuff wasn't super compelling (played through half). The controls feel good and the game looks great. Didn't try the level editor, but still a little bummed you can only share with friends. Don't know if I will get obsessed enough with the game to mess with the leaderboard competition. Feels like a very solid release to me - definitely looking forward to getting home and digging a little deeper into it.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

there's some kinda loop i'm out of here. trial? qu'est que c'est? "xbox trial" is not most enlightening search.
