sonic has been in smash bros since like 2008!

the hilariously large roster is the main appeal of the newer ones
I've got no idea what a sephiroth is, but when we do play Smash Bros. we usually just set character to random.

i was gonna post a steve and alex video but are you telling me you've never played FFVII

Me? That's Final Fantasy, right? No, I don't have any idea what that game/those games are, really. I just assume all the characters I don't recognize in Switch are Final Fantasy, Pokemon, or some other beloved legacy games I've never played.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 December 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link
ok. just fyi that's a recreation of a much discussed and traumatic-for-some scene from final fantasy 7
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 15:02 (three years ago) link
Well it's safe to assume the characters you don't know are from a game you don't know, yes.

heres a website that will give you some background if you want to know what ff7 is all about http://izmo.tripod.com/project/ff7.htm

I do know that people love the Final Fantasy ... music? And is this the series with the utterly impenetrable and/or confusing chronology/plot? Or am I thinking of Metal Gear Solid (another series I've never played)? Anyway, yeah, don't know much about games I've never played, but I do recognize a few Pokemon or Solid Snake characters here and there despite being unfamiliar with the properties. There are a host of Smash Bros. characters that are total blanks to me, though. Marth, Roy, Ike, Bob, Phil, Troy, Cletus ...
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 December 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link
MGS is pretty impenetrable, but still amazing. Final Fantasy basically reboots every single entry and just carries certain creatures/magic/lore along but you don't need to play any entry to understand the next.
― Nhex, Friday, 11 December 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link
This is an extremely unoriginal complaint but this is the problem I have with all those Fire Emblem / general anime sword characters. For people unfamiliar with the source games, they're just so much more boring and generic than the more unique characters from games with overtly distinct art styles, and character variety is a very important part of any fighting game. They have to be visually/thematically memorable so that their movement and attacks are justified and differentiated (think Street Fighter). Anime character designs are a very ingrained part of JRPG franchises but they don't make for intriguing fighting game choices despite the fan service of including them into the all-star lineup.
― Evan, Friday, 11 December 2020 16:22 (three years ago) link
The problem is worsened by Sakurai’s “protagonists first” philosophy, there’s archers and axe wielders and mages in fire emblem but Smash is loaded up with sword guys. If they had done Tifa, Aerith, or Barret instead of Sephiroth it’d be a better world but I guess we get another sword guy.

some of it is that the 'everyone is here' gimmick for this game meant they have to bring back a lot of overlapping ones where the past games would rotate them in and out
a lot of it is that they always choose the protagonist of the game rather than a distinctive secondary character and anime/jrpg protagonists tend to be straight out of central casting (since the contrast with more animated / visually distinct sidekicks is often the point!)
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 December 2020 16:28 (three years ago) link
Xp Which I guess is the result of picking an antagonist over an ally, in any case, while Smash characters are extraordinarily varied in gameplay they are woefully male and light-skinned because they are drawing mostly from the protagonists of popular video games. Some people are very mad about this

Smash brothers lineup selection began with an open session of vince mcmahon memes. Then they worked backwards.

I can't do anything with the fourth character. Been enjoying replaying it since buying it on switch.

They have been totally mum about it iirc. Like, no tweets or anything in months, maybe a year? Which I am all for if the game ends up as perfect as Hollow Knight.

Is Hades on sale?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 18 December 2020 01:17 (three years ago) link
iirc it was less than $30, brand new
i got 150 hours out of it. that's less than a quarter per hour, and it's arguably better than an arcade game
― Karl Malone, Friday, 18 December 2020 01:34 (three years ago) link
I picked up kentucky route zero and streets of rage 4. this is irresponsible when I'm still working through a backlog of: doom; doom II; doom 64; fight'n rage; slay the spire.
at least I didn't pick up the other games on sale from my wish list: paradise killer; hades; if found; river city girls

Did Afterparty ever come out for the Switch? The outdrink the devil game from the Oxenfree people? Anyone played it?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 18 December 2020 15:05 (three years ago) link
I'm very intrigued by Kentucky Route Zero but have never been huge into point and click adventures. but this seems like that transcends the genre a little?
― Karl Malone, Friday, 18 December 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link
it's closer to an interactive story than a point-and-click adventure. when you do need to do stuff to progress, it's usually pretty clear what that is. so there isn't much gameplay but it's beautiful and weird from a visual/audio/storytelling perspective. i've been playing through it slowly because i have to be in the right mood for its slower pace.
― na (NA), Friday, 18 December 2020 18:14 (three years ago) link
its one of the most striking works of fiction in the video game space imo. i haven't gone back to play the last act yet (and would probably need to replay 1-4 as its been years) but i'm sure its still great
but yeah it's in that "walking sim" space between visual novel and point+click adventure, there's no puzzles or challenges, just light interaction and lots of storytelling
― ciderpress, Friday, 18 December 2020 18:40 (three years ago) link
kinda think I may need to try Spiritfarer, which seems like a big ol' mix of platformer, management, monster collector and high concept "art game" with the best possible visual direction.
