Having never bought a big AAA PC title digitally... it makes no difference where I buy it, right? I guess the developer has some tie with gog.com, and the game's subreddit is yelling at people to buy it there. gog.com is prominently advertising "100% of your money goes to" the developer as if they are starving artists. No doubt it's pretty wild at that studio right now but it's weird to see the Bandcamp-style promo for such a huge release.

I use Steam in-home streaming sometimes, but I can just add it in to Steam and it'll be the same as if I bought it there, right? Don't care about Steam achievements and all that.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:29 (five years ago)

GOG is DRM-free, which means you don't need their launcher to run the game.

pomenitul, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:33 (five years ago)

it's weird to see the Bandcamp-style promo for such a huge release

not only that, they made public the fact that developers get 10% of revenue ... for 2020 sales only. buy the game now or the dev gets it!

lukas, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:36 (five years ago)

OK OK OK !

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:36 (five years ago)

yeah cd projekt owns GOG so they obviously want you to buy their game on their own site so they dont have to pay steam the 30% cut or whatever it is

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:41 (five years ago)

lol cdpr has been doing that "100% of proceeds go to the CDPR fund" thing for years to make you feel like you're donating to charity and not a company that famously underpays and overworks its employees

, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:52 (five years ago)

valve sucks too just buy it on whatever you want

, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:52 (five years ago)

Don't buy it on PS4 or XBox One though

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 11 December 2020 00:01 (five years ago)

ooh bonus digital comic book

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 11 December 2020 00:49 (five years ago)

i buy everything on gog cuz no drm and you don’t have to load a frontend to play it, not that they don’t really want you to load their frontend these days.

i literally forgot i preordered this. don’t know when i did it. it almost-runs. definitely a deus ex / gta hybrid, and i mean if you’d told me it was that i probably would have bought it, so can’t complain, altho haven’t played enough to judge it yet. the driving is indeed bad, probably because gta is designed for sticks and deus ex is designed for m+k.

i don’t think choice+consequence is what makes something an rpg but obv that’s a pedantic rabbit hole; it’s as good as anything else.

difficult listening hour, Friday, 11 December 2020 02:12 (five years ago)

I usually prefer GOG too but I'm kind of angry at them right now because their customer service is ass. I assume Steam's is no better, though.

pomenitul, Friday, 11 December 2020 02:16 (five years ago)

(well maybe i do but having it in char development and not in story is sufficient.)

difficult listening hour, Friday, 11 December 2020 02:19 (five years ago)

all i'm hearing about is dongs and glitches and whatnot, how is the actual game?

There's loads of glitch effects by design so who's to say really.

First 45 minutes went fine. I can see why it's first person as there's cutscene sequences and other elements that utilize that (I'm a "street kid" and a cop knocked me out) and they're going for this kind of immersion or whatever.. but hopefully there'll be third person for multiplayer?

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 11 December 2020 12:09 (five years ago)

Friend got it on PS4 Pro and said it seemed mostly fine out of the gate. Quickly turned to shit apparently as it opened up.

Was watching footage of the X-Box equivalent of the Pro and it was running around 20 fps and lower. Don't think I've seen a modern game look/run that poorly on a console.

Def a next-gen/beefy pc purchase only, and even then it seems like it's months away from being reliably playable. Hard to say if the core game is any good or not in the first place.

idk what you're looking for re: "cut the performance chatter, is this any fun?" when it's seemingly unplayable dude

circa1916, Friday, 11 December 2020 13:56 (five years ago)

watch some pc reviews or something

circa1916, Friday, 11 December 2020 13:57 (five years ago)

"it's seemingly unplayable" is not the universal spirit in this thread, just on the internet at large. which i don't trust.
So presuming you can play it, of course I'm curious about if it's fun.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 14:34 (five years ago)

It's not just internet randos tho, plenty of reviewers have complained about it as well.

pomenitul, Friday, 11 December 2020 14:37 (five years ago)

i diggit, seeking confirmation here, which is largely absent...?

pomenitul, Friday, 11 December 2020 16:15 (five years ago)

It's definitely playable. Flatmate has been playing it and his review is: "It's fine". It runs well on his PC and I've watched a few continuous Twitch streams and it looks good there too. I'd echo GTA comparisons and it also reminds me of like LA Noire or Heavy Rain a bit with all the criminal secrecy and unexpected interruptions (but my reference points are limited). I kind of can't wait to play it.

i'm gonna show my age and bafflement here, but i remember the Cpunk 2020 tabletop, and it was terrible! like it seemed even to us teenagers as a really tired retread of cyberpunk stuff in the mid-90s. and the system was really dated too.

and i gather that Keanu is playing the rock star character the writers came up with as cultural color. some of his "lyrics" are preserved on the internet, funny enough

here's 20jfg doing a thing on them in 2016: http://www.20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk/wordpress/2016/02/the-future-is-disposable-and-so-are-you-pt-1-cyberpunk-2020-role-soundtracks-1-solo/

With his breakthrough hit "Chippin' In" and his second album "A Cool Metal Fire," Johnny Silverhand exemplifies all that's wrong with CP202x music. Stupid little bastard.

Got the metal beneath my skin / I'm chippin' in

Riight. Listened to any real music lately, R. Talsorian? Sheesh.

at a base level it's just odd CDPR went this direction after the witcher. who wanted this?

goole, Friday, 11 December 2020 20:05 (five years ago)

i don't make too much of an effort keep my finger on the pulse of the world of video gaming but judging by what i've been hearing on the internet basically everyone

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 11 December 2020 20:16 (five years ago)

I'm about 2 hours in and enjoying it! Gameplay wise it's totally Deus Ex + GTA but it doesn't look like its advanced the genre or anything, it just seems a good example of a AAA game. They do the ray tracing of having lots of shiny surfaces and fog, but they do look REALLY fancy. THe hype is too high but I'm enjoying it for what it is.

On my OK-but-not-great PC (6600k/2060) it runs kinda bad? I think the CPU is the bottleneck but on medium at 1080p with RT and DLSS I can just about make 30fps. I've had one mission glitch out and I had to load an earlier save to get through, and there's the odd hilarious glitch of people walking through walls or cars appearing from below the tarmac or whatever. Definitely better shape than when Skyrim dropped and I played the hell out of that so maybe being old has just got me used to harsher times and kids today don't know how good they've got it, they've never had to configure AUTOEXEC.BAT to get the sound card working grumble grumble.

i really enjoyed this article

https://www.pastemagazine.com/games/shadowrun/shadowrun-review/

xxp to goole

we played a lot of r talsorian cyberpunk 2020 and shadowrun as teenagers, i still have first editions of each in my roleplaying game bookcase. you are otm, both are super campy and full of dumb slang and silly attempts to be edgy. we totally always played both for yuks, but i think we played a lot more cyberpunk (judging from the condition of the book) probably because it was more campy than shadowrun.

the system wasn't that bad especially compared to shadowrun's dice pools which made absolutely no sense. it was so quick and dirty and easy to understand, i mean you can sum in the entire system pretty much in a parenthetical (d10 + stat + skill vs difficulty level of 5/10/15/20/25/30)

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 20:18 (five years ago)

i remember spending like an entire week downloading ultima vii on a dialup connection. that shit was like a dozen 3.5 floppies!

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 20:21 (five years ago)

Cyberpunk 2020 was fine when it came out in 1988. By the mid-90s yeah, it would be dated both mechanically and in it's cheesy aesthetic. But it captured the vibe of the pulpy cyberpunk stuff like Hardwired really well.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 11 December 2020 21:38 (five years ago)

i played part of a cyberpunk 2020 campaign earlier this year. it was pretty fun, but then i got into a big fight with the GM and blew it up

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 December 2020 22:10 (five years ago)

honestly, though, i thought i would be really pumped up to play 2077, and maybe i'm letting too much of the negative reviews/bugs stuff influence me, but i am in no mood to play it right now

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 December 2020 22:11 (five years ago)

then i got into a big fight with the GM and blew it up

couldn't agree who got dong 1 and who got dong 2 huh

i have pdfs of all the shadowrun and cyberpunk books; if that's anyone's madeleine, ilx mail me and i'll pass them along

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:21 (five years ago)

for some reason, the thing i got most obsessed with as a kid with cyberpunk was the monomolecular garrote where it spools in your knuckle and you pop off your fingertip to pull it out. i thought that was the COOLEST

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:23 (five years ago)

forks are you aware of THE TROVE

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 22:49 (five years ago)

well i am now! how are they not getting c+d letters every day?

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:53 (five years ago)

idk i figure either some kind of pirate bay-esque "our server is in international waters on an oil platform" type fuckery or maybe the $$$ lost in pirating dnd books is just real small potatoes

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 23:08 (five years ago)

just like the pirate bay they tend to go down for a few weeks every so often before they find a new host with an even more obscure top level domain

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

it's a ridiculous collection, even on a cursory look around

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

yes it's very comprehensive!

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2020 23:19 (five years ago)

at a base level it's just odd CDPR went this direction after the witcher. who wanted this?

I want a cool cyberpunk (note lowercase) RPG! But as my luck would have it, CDPR were the ones to develop it. :(

why are there six dong options (small, default and big variants of circumcised and uncircumcised) but only one vagina

"and isn't it ironic"

LocalGarda, Thursday, 18 December 2025 08:13 (five months ago)

can you mod in third person view on PC?

||||||||, Thursday, 18 December 2025 09:58 (five months ago)

it was pretty iffy a while ago but it looks like there are some pretty mature 3rd person mods now

mh, Friday, 19 December 2025 17:55 (five months ago)

Steam has it on sale for $21, $39 for it + Phantom Liberty. Dongs aside, is it worth getting if I'm a light-duty gamer or is it a big time sink to get anything done. My laptop is an over-configured M4 Max MacBook Pro

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 31 December 2025 01:43 (five months ago)

You can hop in and do a few small missions at a time. Might be the ideal way to do things, although the main plot quests are more bingeable.

mh, Wednesday, 31 December 2025 15:32 (five months ago)

three months pass...

this game seems pretty huge - kinda overwhelming returning to it after a break. fun tho

||||||||, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 13:09 (one month ago)

lol how long was the break?

tbh one of the few games i got to the end with, it is big and yeah fun. dlc is pretty great too.

Ste, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 13:34 (one month ago)

since last post above, so ~4 months. just going to ease back in slowly (figure out my build again, re-learn the systems etc.) doesn’t help that modern games have so many controls and different systems.

the world is so immersive

||||||||, Tuesday, 14 April 2026 13:38 (one month ago)

I’m about twenty hours in and enjoying it a lot - mostly noodling about with side quests. From the hype, I’d expected more than GTA Night City, which is kind of what it is, but it’s well-executed.

It does seem incredibly easy on Normal difficulty, though. You can one-shot most people with a rifle, would almost have to be surrounded by six people firing at you from three feet away to be in any danger of actually dying, etc. The stealth elements are more challenging, tbf.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 15:46 (one month ago)

I think Hard is probably the best starting difficulty but you can change it at any time without any repercussions so I'd recommend doing so

The only criticism I've heard with that is that CD Projekt Red doesn't really do difficulty scaling that well so you might encounter the occasional boss-like figure that's just a bullet sponge instead of more of a tactical challenge

I popped back into the game to check out the one ending I hadn't played a couple months ago and made my first non-hacking character. No deck, just the chrome compressor that lets you stack more cyberware, and concentrated all the skill trees into tech weapons. Just sliding around headshotting guys with pistols, very little stealth
