Because of the pandemic I'm watching a lot more YouTube this year. Still can't get on the Twitch lifestyle of actually hopping on at a certain time and watching someone goof for hours. Like, I could do that with actual RL friends over Zoom, maybe, but I don't know if I could make that sort of connection with a streamer. Greatly prefer the (admittedly rife with its own problems) YouTube ingestion

the only dunkey piece that features a quote from his wife: https://www.polygon.com/2020/12/7/22160005/dunkey-youtube-among-us-minecraft-trending

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:12 (five years ago)

I've been trying to cut myself off from Twitch after getting a bit too sucked in over the last few months. It's kind of scary how compulsive it can get, especially when I don't feel like I have the energy for anything else. There's a monotony and narcotic quality about it that makes it a little too easy to consume.

There's now a video of that streamer reacting to Dunkey reacting to that streamer reacting to Dunkey.

DJP, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 14:31 (five years ago)

There is nothing sadder than the distillation of everything to "content." Like, there are names for literally everything they are calling "content," but the actual, er, content doesn't matter at all, it just has to take up space/time. "You know, during the pandemic I've been watching a lot of content, reading some content, but what I really want to do is write the Great American Content. A lot of people don't know this, but I actually have a degree in content from the Iowa content program."

Anyone else see the Times article from a week or so back about iirc Chinese real estate companies selling shares in reality TV etc. housing compounds, enticing investors with a piece of their revenue streams?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 14:33 (five years ago)

Yeah framing it as "content" like that always gave me a similar impression- like it's just indistinguishable stimulation-gruel poured unceremoniously into the trough that is youtube or twitch or whatever. This content vs that content? What does it matter? It's content; consume it. It's about quantity and there always needs to be a fresh supply. Nothing else really matters. The purpose of it is the same and about as scrutinized as cartoons to keep a toddler occupied or HGTV in a dentist's waiting room.

Evan, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 14:48 (five years ago)

the "content" thing has been around for a long time now. for me, it's an extremely useful indicator of sorts - "content" people are fucking weird and definitely stay far away from them

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 16:51 (five years ago)

That video is like willingly signing up for an ouroboros human centipede of content creation/consumption for $13/hr.

i knew someone who got too wrapped up in his job and would say "product" over and over again and it drove me crazy. this "content" stuff reminds me of the same thing

Nhex, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 19:00 (five years ago)

also people who aren't game developers using "assets" when they're talking about art / environments

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 19:05 (five years ago)

images as "assets" come up frequently outside of game development, too.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 19:09 (five years ago)

sound familiar? this is corporate speak for "evaluate photos of butts for the big presentation". Thank me later- oh and congrats on that promotion ;)

I am morbidly curious to see how high GME will go this week. already peaked at $150 today - this stock was around $20 a month ago, and $5 a year ago!
Not sure I'm curious enough to start a Robinhood account though... but money won is always better than money earned, right?

Should people be shorting GME or are there too many morons available to prop this thing up for long enough to make shorting prohibitively painful?

Smokahontas and John Spliff (PBKR), Monday, 25 January 2021 19:34 (five years ago)

it's because there were already people shorting GME, that it's rising, because the stock market

Nhex, Monday, 25 January 2021 19:44 (five years ago)

Is this situation ONE WEIRD TRICK that's inherent to shorting, and that GME happened to be the one company that this happened to?
