Eh, humans are weird like that (or at least that's my excuse for the open tab with "All Force Unleashed II Cutscenes")

Yeah, he's playing amongst us on Twitch atm

It did briefly have me contemplating what if that is his real voice.
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 7 December 2020 07:57 (three years ago) link
he's still doing that voice on stream with himself on camera. too lazy to watch and see if he cracks
― Nhex, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:48 (three years ago) link
His 3 1/2 hour (!) "reaction" stream is like the funniest prolonged deadpan schtick I've seen in some time:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/826010265
Like, when he's playing "guess which one's the magician" or whatever? Genius. I mean, come on:

― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:07 (three years ago) link
it is hilarious and awful that the streamer watching someone else's content has become completely normalized already. so lazy. i suppose it's slightly better than those reaction videos where you couldn't see what they were watching...
― Nhex, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link
this is great if he quits next week

it would be, but i do wonder what the 600th straight day of this kind of dunkey would be like. it could be amazing, it could be a personal disaster

I've just been watching random bits of the Dunkey streams, but I saw yesterday during the "Drama Monday! (react)" stream that there is a clip of him reacting to a guy reacting to his video announcing this semi-satirical switch in streaming strategy. "There is such big drama with this guy ..." Or another bit where some hack hints that after talking about bunch of shitty games he's going to talk about Uncharted 4, and Dunkey gets excited, but then the guy starts talking about some other shitty game instead, and Dunkey is incredulous. "what the fuck!? this is gonna start a *big-ass* drama." This is like the Dunkey equivalent of Autechre releasing an 8-hour album.
I assume at some point he'll revert back to his usual videos. I imagine this prolonged bit works kind of like a pledge drive?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 15:22 (three years ago) link
It’s obviously a put on but gotta be tempting to play through...
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link
Sounds like a having-it-both-ways deal honestly - if his numbers actually do go up by pumping out garbage daily, why shouldn't he do it? Quick glance on Twitch shows his old videos at 30-60k, this past week's views at 100-200K.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 15:32 (three years ago) link
Yep, I read a sad polygon thing on that yesterday. At least for now, he’s getting significantly more views
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link
On YouTube, I mean
Because of the pandemic I'm watching a lot more YouTube this year. Still can't get on the Twitch lifestyle of actually hopping on at a certain time and watching someone goof for hours. Like, I could do that with actual RL friends over Zoom, maybe, but I don't know if I could make that sort of connection with a streamer. Greatly prefer the (admittedly rife with its own problems) YouTube ingestion
― Nhex, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

I've been trying to cut myself off from Twitch after getting a bit too sucked in over the last few months. It's kind of scary how compulsive it can get, especially when I don't feel like I have the energy for anything else. There's a monotony and narcotic quality about it that makes it a little too easy to consume.
― jmm, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 17:46 (three years ago) link
There's now a video of that streamer reacting to Dunkey reacting to that streamer reacting to Dunkey.

There is nothing sadder than the distillation of everything to "content." Like, there are names for literally everything they are calling "content," but the actual, er, content doesn't matter at all, it just has to take up space/time. "You know, during the pandemic I've been watching a lot of content, reading some content, but what I really want to do is write the Great American Content. A lot of people don't know this, but I actually have a degree in content from the Iowa content program."
Anyone else see the Times article from a week or so back about iirc Chinese real estate companies selling shares in reality TV etc. housing compounds, enticing investors with a piece of their revenue streams?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 14:33 (three years ago) link
Yeah framing it as "content" like that always gave me a similar impression- like it's just indistinguishable stimulation-gruel poured unceremoniously into the trough that is youtube or twitch or whatever. This content vs that content? What does it matter? It's content; consume it. It's about quantity and there always needs to be a fresh supply. Nothing else really matters. The purpose of it is the same and about as scrutinized as cartoons to keep a toddler occupied or HGTV in a dentist's waiting room.
― Evan, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 14:48 (three years ago) link
the "content" thing has been around for a long time now. for me, it's an extremely useful indicator of sorts - "content" people are fucking weird and definitely stay far away from them
