yeah it fills some completist compulsions I have. But I also switch off easily between all the games I have right now.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:51 (four years ago) link

the show makes a lot more sense as well.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:51 (four years ago) link

i really want to play overcooked (it seems totally my thing but partner is like meep?) but I am going to wait until I am home home to do the 7 days ps plus trial and try out a bunch of other games.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:57 (four years ago) link

got my money back on Civ6 because it wasn't compatible on my TV.. but I was keen to play a similar game, you know, strategy, building stuff.. is Tropico 6 worth a look? Or something else? What's Bad North like?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:14 (four years ago) link

Tropico hasn't really changed much since 3. It's sort of disappointing. Still, I enjoyed it a lot the first time I played.

Maybe check out Frostpunk, Two Point Hospital, Jurassic World Evolution, Northgard, Surviving Mars... Bad North looks cool too.

sims 4 in this month's PS+ (along with Bioshock Complete)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 04:06 (four years ago) link

Hmm maybe I’ll resub for that

The Return of the Obra Dinnis GOAT material, I'm on my third playthrough and am getting close to completion. So atmospheric and such brilliant game mecahnics.

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 08:16 (four years ago) link

Really enjoyed Obra Dinn, but feel like it got less fun towards the end when you had to solve the deaths of some of the more indistinct characters. Felt like I was trial-n-error-ing it a bunch after a certain point. But maybe there were clues that I just didn't pick up.

Regardless, yeah, it is very good. Really well done.

circa1916, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

I think a bit of speculation is inevitable, I didn't feel much compunction switching the names of the Russian seamen around until I got a three, for example.

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 14:02 (four years ago) link

Being reported that PS5 will cost around $450 to produce, which means at least $470 to recoup. That seems high, even if they do artificially lower the price to sell it at a loss. But on the other hand, people buy phones for $800+ and don't seem to balk at that, and those are just phones. Plus, Playstation exclusives seem pretty awesome.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 February 2020 17:13 (four years ago) link

The Last Of Us was £8.99 for download so I thought I'd go for it. Wonderful-looking game, if a little 'on rails' so far. Subject matter a bit close to home in this climate though.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Saturday, 15 February 2020 17:49 (four years ago) link

That's this generation, IMO we should wait till the next is actually out before we can say for sure.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Saturday, 15 February 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link

phones aren't really comparable since they're portable and have a display

ciderpress, Saturday, 15 February 2020 19:14 (four years ago) link

But they also all functionally do the same thing, unlike game consoles, which are unique and which do one thing.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 February 2020 20:49 (four years ago) link

spiderman is indeed a lot of fun. really liking it.

Yerac, Saturday, 15 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

It is the only game that I have ever “100%”ed

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 February 2020 21:21 (four years ago) link

yeah, all of the gameplay is so smooth and pleasant. I really do need to start concentrating on only a couple of games at once. I switch so much I get all bobbled with the different controls.

Yerac, Sunday, 16 February 2020 05:04 (four years ago) link

that's one of the reasons I'm loathe to start new games - learning all the different controls all over again

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Sunday, 16 February 2020 09:47 (four years ago) link

As far as FPS go, "Hunt: Showdown" looks like a, er, blast.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 16:03 (four years ago) link

huh, it's by Crytek. Interesting

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 21:48 (four years ago) link

oh hey the FF7R demo is finally up on PSN for download, 7.6GB

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 2 March 2020 09:29 (four years ago) link

anyone played Dreams yet? I've hardly scratched the surface but I've a feeling it needs its own thread

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 2 March 2020 10:10 (four years ago) link

is there more to it than the gaming equivalent of shitposts cos that's all I've seen on YT so far

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 2 March 2020 10:21 (four years ago) link

no idea. the proper version has only just come out, so my guess is that it will improve as it goes on. my first impression is that there's a lot to learn and the control system is complicated and a bit fiddly. that said, i've only had it about a week and only played it a few hours. the fun is creating stuff i'm guessing

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 2 March 2020 14:24 (four years ago) link

it seems like a massive technical achievement, but Super Mario Maker has made me very dubious of stuff that wholly relies on user generated content, would rather just see the jokes on YT rather than pay to play them.

playing Ys 8 and really enjoying it, I have a massive soft spot for these kind of slightly janky b-tier japanese games tho. I blame the PS2.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 2 March 2020 14:33 (four years ago) link

ys 8 is s-tier

ciderpress, Monday, 2 March 2020 15:19 (four years ago) link

I bought Dreams in early access. It's an amazing set of tools, but the games are all just demos at best.

Haven't played a single thing in it that is as fun as *any* level in Little Big Planet 1.

I've tried the creator a few times but couldn't handle the motion controls and bounced out of it. It is extremely deep though. I want to get into making music for it.

Here's a youtube guy I like:

lol outer wilds is so good.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 08:11 (four years ago) link

xp The showcase ('Art's Dream') is at once incredibly impressive and also limited. It has multiple gameplay styles, from platform to puzzle to beat em up to RPG. song and dance numbers, a loose story etc, but I wouldn't actually pay to play it.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 09:55 (four years ago) link

that said, it's an amzing idea for a tool, and creating an interface that technically lets anyone create any thing using a control pad is amazing.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 09:57 (four years ago) link

the FF7R demo is ... interesting? it looks and sounds amazing. the dialog is bad/corny and I suspect that's exactly what they were going for. the battle system is definitely the most interesting thing about it though, at the start I hated it, but during the final boss battle it started to make more sense? need to play through it again.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 08:26 (four years ago) link

just started Dark Souls 3. Didn't get very far. The first boss is as hard to kill as one of the final bosses in Witcher 3

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 09:45 (four years ago) link

Nearing the end of Spiderman and everyone in the city is wearing face masks. IT JUST FEELS RIGHT.

Yerac, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:07 (four years ago) link

xpost Keep at it! My favorite aspect of Dark Souls is how enemies that seem insurmountable at the start become pushovers by the end, underscoring your progress as a player.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:56 (four years ago) link

for anyone who didn’t already know this: outer wilds is grebt.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 18:17 (four years ago) link

best part of the ff7r demo imo is that they somehow manage to say "soldier boy" 12 times

Shadow of the Colossus remake (which I forgot existed?) is free via PS+ this month. Loved the original but haven’t played it since it was released. Remake is A+, really did a bang up job of keeping the feel of it while cleaning everything up. Looks beautiful, no muddiness and 10 FPS slowdowns, controls have been tightened, etc.

Game remains a stone cold classic.

circa1916, Saturday, 7 March 2020 06:16 (four years ago) link

There's not much to it, but it definitely looks great and has a great payoff.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 March 2020 16:06 (four years ago) link

I mean the spare simplicity is kinda fundamental to what makes it special, but I’ve come to terms with it being a “you had to be there” game.

circa1916, Saturday, 7 March 2020 16:31 (four years ago) link

I'm chalking it up to you had to be there, got bored at the third boss and haven't tried it since.

Feminism-Appropriating Regressive Transphobe (Leee), Saturday, 7 March 2020 17:47 (four years ago) link

my terrible secret shame (vol 523) is that i've never played more than 20 minutes of shadow. the first 20 minutes. i really liked it, i just never purchased it! so i'll probably give it a shot while it's free.

i do worry that it'll be good in the "you had to be there" way. most games, even iconic games, are like that, i think. they're almost like car models, with incremental upgrades and advances over the years that cross brands and genres. the advances of shadow of the colossus were incorporated into a million other games since then, so when you go back to the original the outstanding qualities might not pop out so much.

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 17:51 (four years ago) link

I played ico 100 years ago and found the whole experience depressing but beautiful but just couldn't Carey through

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Saturday, 7 March 2020 17:57 (four years ago) link

There's a real strain of sadness through Shadow. Even achievements.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 March 2020 17:59 (four years ago) link

Achievement: murdered a very large innocent creature just moseying around

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:01 (four years ago) link

well, there's a twist at the end, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:06 (four years ago) link

achievement: 3 of those large innocent creatures were your own children

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:09 (four years ago) link

oh wait, i can guess what it is: at the end of the game, you BECOME one of the creatures. i seriously think that's what it is

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link
