Bad dudes is great/cheesy/addictive obvs, but imo the original arcade shinobi is one of the greatest games ever, and still holds up pretty well! Upgrading from the throwing stars to the blue lazer thingy then blasting through everyone is peak arcade game

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 27 January 2020 20:03 (six years ago)

Not sure if driving games are especially popular here but would recommend Rush Rally 3. Dude who made it is ex-Sumo Digital, who did the Outrun 2 conversions, Sega All-Stars Racing, etc. Really tactile, arcadey handling (on beginner/intermediate level at least) and will certainly do me until M2 get given Sega Rally to convert.

I'm also in the grip of Puzzle Quest. The 'quest' part is the usual sub-Tolkien guff but the match-3 hook is strong.

Twelves, Friday, 31 January 2020 12:00 (six years ago)

there's another puzzle quest game without the tolkien guff...

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:25 (six years ago)

haha nooooooo don't infect him

Nhex, Saturday, 1 February 2020 00:50 (six years ago)

puzzle quest has a version that's not Free to play. that seems important!!

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 1 February 2020 01:38 (six years ago)

that's its original form!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 1 February 2020 22:59 (six years ago)

for sure! it's sad that it became a ftp thing for several years

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 1 February 2020 23:01 (six years ago)

Wonderful 101 kickstarter is up, seems like Platinum cut a deal with Nintendo over the IP rights
already smashed the (very low) Switch port goal, stretch goals for Steam and PS4 ports + others as yet unannounced

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 3 February 2020 20:33 (six years ago)

one of the rewards is to be blocked on Twitter by Kamiya lol

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 3 February 2020 20:34 (six years ago)

not a fan of such a big company with private investors using kickstarter like this, it's still somewhat of a scam even if it's highly likely to work out fine for everyone

ciderpress, Monday, 3 February 2020 20:51 (six years ago)

that said i will gladly buy and play a normal retail release of the game

ciderpress, Monday, 3 February 2020 20:55 (six years ago)

It’s def just a marketing tactic

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 3 February 2020 20:56 (six years ago)

agree with u, ciderpress. it's like tricking a bunch of people to pre-order, without even having a set release date.
i'll buy it after it releases

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 03:04 (six years ago)

Seems kinda lame to me that Animal Crossing is reportedly only one island per Switch. That is, the whole family can play, but only in the same playground. I was under the impression that building your own world/town/island/whatever was one of the game's biggest draws?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 12:40 (six years ago)

Well, to counterpoint that, the thing we as a family LOVED about New Leaf on 3DS was the fact we shared a town, same neighbours, shared progress, etc. My eldest was still very young at the time and getting letters from him in game was honestly really touching.

JimD, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 13:29 (six years ago)

yeah that's the standard setup for the series

ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 13:36 (six years ago)

It doesn’t feel like a limitation because the whole game’s designed to be played that way.

JimD, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 13:44 (six years ago)

Ok. All I know of the game is via my daughter, who got into the Wii version. She seemed into the personal nature of the game, birthdays and whatnot.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:01 (six years ago)

it's a life sim not a city builder, the world persisting without you is a feature

ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:08 (six years ago)

But if you're sharing an island or whatever with other family members, does that mean someone can login and mess up the stuff you've worked on? Go into your house and sell your furniture?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:16 (six years ago)

Yes, that is why it’s such a popular franchise, letting other players steal your expensive stuff

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:28 (six years ago)

iirc they have to do that

juntos pedemos (Euler), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:44 (six years ago)

that's when it gets like dark souls

juntos pedemos (Euler), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 14:45 (six years ago)

Would play.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:17 (six years ago)

Heh I mean to answer that properly, nah, they can’t pick up your furniture so can’t sell it. They can dig up your garden I guess but if they’re doing that then...raise nicer kids?

JimD, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:41 (six years ago)

Don’t seek technical solutions to social problems

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

Only one of my kids plays this game or is even interested in it, so that's not even an issue. I was just asking, because it looked like limiting the game was yet another way for Nintendo to make money. I didn't realize it's always been like this in Animal Crossing.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:03 (six years ago)

yes, asynchronous multiplayer is part of the design of the series, it's not a limitation

ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:09 (six years ago)

josh

||||||||, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 18:23 (six years ago)

please allow nintendo to make some money on their wares

zuck zuck lucify (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 19:07 (six years ago)

I didn't realize after the first Picross S, Jupiter released S2, S3 and this game apparently?
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/picross-lord-of-the-nazarick-switch/

Nhex, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 14:41 (six years ago)

yeah lots of picross available. i think i was on the last page of puzzles in S1 when i burned out

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 14:43 (six years ago)

I totally burned out similarly, then picked it up again like... two years later? Now I'm hungry again

Nhex, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 15:08 (six years ago)

lol at this from kamiya's design notes on the w101 kickstarter page

In this initial stage, I was fixated on the number 100 instead of 101. Then, towards the end of development, when we had to decide on the official title, the client said: "We'd like you to get a little more creative with the title. For example...what about adding one more to the number?"

ciderpress, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:09 (six years ago)

I kind of feel like the Switch Animal Crossing might deserve its own thread.

Anyway, the ā€œtrouble with neighboursā€ thread on ILE made me imagine an intentionally adversarial, passive-aggressive version of this, and Stardew Valley, etc

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

I'm sure I read about (an urban myth maybe?) game where you have buried a number of bodies in your garden and have to get on with your neighbours ala animal crossing while making sure that no one digs up your garden and finds out the truth. But I've just searched and can't find anything about it.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:03 (six years ago)

yes that's right, no reason to search for anything. there's nothing to find here. let's just head toward town and pick up some supplies, yes this way

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:07 (six years ago)

zappi’s idea sounds like a dream

I imagine you’re also a recent homebuyer in this scenario; the implication is that Tom Nook is trying to frame you, and you also have to convince a white-shoed defense attorney to consider your case

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:26 (six years ago)

animal cross(examin)ing

Homegrown Georgia speedster Ladd McConkey (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:27 (six years ago)

does this game have 6ft fences

||||||||, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:35 (six years ago)

and who is starting the AnCro thread

||||||||, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:35 (six years ago)

I’m not. I’m in a pizza place on Zing

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:39 (six years ago)

don't make me start it with a dumb HRO inspired thread title

||||||||, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:40 (six years ago)

Just put the name of the game in all caps and don’t forget the plural like Tim Rogers did

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:47 (six years ago)

Forget it man, you’re unreliable

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:51 (six years ago)

We should prereview

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 8 February 2020 21:01 (six years ago)

it didn't make my shortlist of 2020 games i'm allowing myself to buy before finishing my dozen backlogged games. 8 out of 10

ciderpress, Saturday, 8 February 2020 21:05 (six years ago)

this will be the first animal crossing game i've ever played, and i will accept nothing less than the greatest animal crossing game of all time. this is that game. 9.8 out of 10

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 8 February 2020 21:12 (six years ago)

i'm not even sure how the asynchronous mechanics work, tbh, but zappi can i visit your world? i want to, uh, look in your backyard

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!šŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Saturday, 8 February 2020 21:14 (six years ago)
