A PS4 Thread: Because You Had to Play "Knack"

I did start Red Dead, and it looks absolutely incredible, but starting it while still being half way through the Witcher main quest felt like I was about to start Gravity's Rainbow halfway through Infinite Jest, for want of a better analogy.

rdr2 is less of an epic tale, and more like a short story read incredibly slowly, while you also walk around and do things incredibly slowly. want to turn around to face the other direction? that takes 3 hours

I also put spiderman, outworlds on the list and saw Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 3 together for $34. That's a good price, yeah?

You can always just go straight to RDR online. There's a lot of content in there now.

is it still full of people who just show up whenever you spawn and try to kill you? that's pretty much what GTA online and RDR online have been like for me, in the 3-4 total hours i've spent with them. maybe i've just been getting really unlucky with the servers i'm assigned to, but just the possibility of that is enough to keep me away

You can turn on safe mode and turn off mics, which is what I do

frostpunk is $20 + age of empires: planetfall is $25 in the store atm (until 2/5). i've wanted to play both but feel unsure about 4X/city building games on the ps4... has anyone tried either?

i haven't, but i share the same unease. apparently civ VI on ps4 actually has pretty good console interface, but otherwise it seems like a frustrating exercise to use a controller

i realised that my old crappy tv cuts the edges off the picture of anything i plug through the HDMI, making CIV6 impossible to play because the icons are all on the very border. This has annoyed me.

you can adjust that in PS4 settings, right?

tried. did nothing. TV doesn't seem to have a setting on it either. happens when I plug my laptop in too. I think it's got some sort of automatic overscan you can't override. I mean, I got it secondhand in 2011, so I dunno

To set the display area of the game screen to match the TV screen, select (Settings) > [Sound and Screen] > [Display Area Settings].

it's good, looking forward to finally playing the last act after all these years. will probably need to replay the whole thing to remember what's going on

A week into having that ps4 bundle. Have played a lot of God of War and Event Horizon Zero or whatever it's called. Not really feeling Last of Us even though I love zombies.

I've ordered Sakuza, Spiderman and Witcher 3 and holding off getting another controller and Outer Worlds/Death Stranding until i've made my way through the other games.

Spiderman is absolutely sensational. One of the best games ever.

Come back to Last Of Us in a different mood, maybe. To an extent the effect is cumulative.

Spiderman is such a blast, one of those games where the game itself is almost irrelevant to the experience of just swinging around.

Last of Us is definitely a story driven game. It gets really engrossing once you finish the Capitol building.

Ha Sakuza. I think I mixed up Sekiro, Yakuza and Sakura all together.

We've been tag teaming all the same saved games (like doing handoffs when one gets aggravated or needs to do some work), so I might play Last of Us on my own.

does The Last of Us involve violence on children? that's a no go for me, and I see a child in the game art.

I have been very surprised about the amount of swearing in the games. I wished there was a function to play a cleaner version. I have been trying to figure out which games might be ok for this 8 year old that I watch sometimes.

Part of the "games aren't just for kids anymore" aesthetics is swearing.

As for what the games you have that are appropriate for a pre-teen, I think Horizon Zero Dawn is the best bet. It's almost profanity-free (the one censorable swear that I can think of is missable, meaning that it's not part of the main storyline), and also doesn't ogle its main character. That said, it is post-apocalyptic and there are scenes where people die horribly.

The horrible deaths aren't graphic, however.

NBD, really, if you play anything online most of the profuse swearing you'll hear from fellow players is by eight-year-olds afaict.

I might just get FIFA for him to play and be done with it. He's not my kid so I don't want to be responsible for corruption.

Horizon Zero Dawn is pretty good! but it’s also guilty of some of the most outlandishly dull dialogue ever committed to ones and zeroes in a AAA game.

Spider-Man would be a very good bet for an 8 yo - there is no outright killing, you never use a gun, it’s v wholesome

Yeah we really like Horizon Zero. So far it's our favorite although the dialogue and the one dude that just lays on the ground forever are dull. We just started Witcher 3 last night. So much prologue!

Spider-man might have the occasional "damn" or "hell," something like that, but it's pretty innocent super hero fun. But, like, for example, something like Resident Evil 7, if that were a movie it would have to go out unrated for all the extreme violence and language.

My 9 year old son loves Ratchet & Clank (good) and Knack (bad) but also racing games like Driveclub and TrackMania as well as Rocket League.

All of those are dirt cheap now.

If you can find games that are rated ESRB "E" or "10+" those tend to be "good for children".

spider-man is damagingly boring. ratchet and clank and rocket league are both enormous fun.

still obsessively playing Witcher 3 and nothing else. completed the main quest and now it feels like the real fun is starting somehow

Kratos is very emotionally distant from his son in God of War.

it's because his son isn't good enough at helping out with the bow and arrow. it makes kratos very angry, which he transmutes into sadness and distance

looking for more two player couch games. we love Crash Bandicoot Racing and Overcooked 2 but starting to get a bit tired of them

EDF if you like co-op shooters, both 4.1 and 5 are fantastic, grab whichever is cheapest

Thanks Euler, there goes the rest of my Sunday. I own CSD the mobile game & on Steam but didn’t know there was a PS4 version.

it is different than CSD1. on console rather than touchscreen the controls are hard to master, and slower, so I've found it doable better in coop, à la Overcooked. but it has soooooo many recipes and is thus fun fun fun.

xpost I am really into Witcher 3 as well. It's really relaxing.

it is sort of boring. repetitive in some ways but also very addictive. I feel obsessively like I have to complete it. but I also wonder if that's because I am itching to get on with some sort of other game instead
