I guess it's 2019 and Nintendo isn't dumb.

they're still at least 40% dumb

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 16 December 2019 23:59 (six years ago)

Most of the most popular things in history have always been within the margin of error of being 40% dumb

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 00:29 (six years ago)

you have to go out of your way to delete saves even if you uninstall the game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 00:48 (six years ago)

the big new stardew patch is out on switch apparently, tempted to spin up a new game of that

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 01:11 (six years ago)

So annoying that you can't copy a cartridge to the internal storage. I understand why, but it still sucks.

Describe this without spoilers please? I really need an excuse to delete my aborted attempt at enjoying this

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 02:02 (six years ago)

i think it just adds a bunch more Stuff to the game, i don't want to look up the details either. i don't think it'll fundamentally change how you feel about the game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 02:24 (six years ago)

I want a 2D Mario game and I'm probably not good enough to play weird Mario Maker levels, so I guess I'm buying New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

New: Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

New Super Mario Bros.: U Deluxe

New: Super Mario Bros. U: Deluxe

lukas, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

have you played Celeste

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:27 (six years ago)

I have played nothing

lukas, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:28 (six years ago)

it looks hard. imagine you're recommending games for an easily frustrated eleven-year-old.

lukas, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:38 (six years ago)

cuphead (jk)

This is smart. What if you got a physical copy and want to free up space on the system but want to pick and choose what save files you hang onto?

Evan, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:42 (six years ago)

you can delete them on a game by game basis, there's a menu for it in settings -> data management

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:50 (six years ago)

lukas Celeste has a granular Assist Mode that lets you tweak the difficulty to your preferences if you get frustrated, and it's also the best Mario game imo

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:54 (six years ago)

Cuphead is a million times harder than Celeste imo

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:55 (six years ago)

Honestly, in a way, Stardew Valley was harder for me than Celeste. Once I started going in the mines that shit got stressful for me.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:55 (six years ago)

i need to update my $20-and-under eshop recommendation list now that a zillion more games have been ported

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 18:59 (six years ago)

hopefully they port disco elysium!

Maybe I'm missing something (probably) but if this is meant to be a rebuttal I can't figure out how.

Evan, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:06 (six years ago)

You win, getting Celeste ty

lukas, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:08 (six years ago)

celeste is fantastic. ILG game of the year iirc.

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:09 (six years ago)

celeste is indeed excellent but it's more of a SMB (super meat boy) spiritual sequel than SMB (super mario bros)

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:12 (six years ago)

SMB can be played by your mother who doesn't know that you can hold Y to run and only uses the spin jump button--SMB cannot

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:14 (six years ago)

oh i thought it was a real question and not a rhetorical one

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:20 (six years ago)

Oh, yeah. I thought you were originally complaining that it was dumb the switch wouldn't automatically dump the save files when you uninstall the corresponding game.

Evan, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:21 (six years ago)

And looking back that is where I misread the conversation.

Evan, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:22 (six years ago)

lukas if you want great platformers you should play VVVVVV and super meat boy too. donkey kong tropical freeze too.

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:24 (six years ago)

no, the way they handle it is good. the only bad gotcha with save data is you can't back it up to a sd card but i guess they're paranoid about people using that as a hacking entry point

ciderpress, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:26 (six years ago)

Celeste is like Super Meat Boy but it's *also* like Super Mario Bros 3! And it's even a little bit like Undertale maybe? There's a lot there.

Very minor point, but I love the menus. They have the polish of like Gran Turismo or something.

Evan, Thursday, 19 December 2019 19:41 (six years ago)

i haven't played it yet despite buying it at release. i think the consensus was that it's fine?

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 December 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

ciderpress-certified indie treasure Yoku's Island Express is on deep sale

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 December 2019 23:52 (six years ago)

did anyone here ever play "the friends of ringo ishikawa"? i remember it got a mention or two when it came out

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 December 2019 23:52 (six years ago)

Celeste is dumb. Hyper light drifter is dumb.

brain dead operatus (FlopsyDuck), Friday, 20 December 2019 00:49 (six years ago)

I think my next game is going to be FF-IX pc version with the Moguri Texture Mod & Polygon Upscaling (image comparison)

brain dead operatus (FlopsyDuck), Friday, 20 December 2019 01:01 (six years ago)

Games now on sale that I will recommend:

Transistor - I picked this up last time it went on sale, very pretty/stylish ARPG from the same folks as Bastion. Neat combat & upgrade system. Good oblique storytelling.

Death Road to Canada - Kind of a slight game, but it's a v. funny survival roguelike with Oregon Trail elements.

The Count Lucanor - Folkloric horror Zeldalike with no combat; cute art style belies that this game goes to some genuinely unsettling places. The gameplay isn't deep, but it's a very well-written and well-paced adventure.

may the force leave us alone (zchyrs), Friday, 20 December 2019 12:38 (six years ago)

anyone play the touryst

tony blair electric chair (||||||||), Friday, 20 December 2019 19:15 (six years ago)

unless there's some twist i didn't get to in the first hour, there's just not much interest to it gameplay-wise. feels very tech demo-y, the visual style is slick for switch but that's it

ciderpress, Friday, 20 December 2019 19:31 (six years ago)

There was a Digital Foundry review of the game that basically called it a masterpiece, and in true nerd fashion based that assessment entirely on how it was designed and how it plays (stable frame rate, etc.). But not once did the review say anything about whether or not it was actually a good game.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2019 19:43 (six years ago)

that's digital foundry's thing, graphics tech focused reviews

ciderpress, Friday, 20 December 2019 20:53 (six years ago)

Oh, I understand, but it still seems strange to call anything "game of the year" based exclusively on how it runs.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2019 21:15 (six years ago)

they probably liked the game! i didn't but i'm one person

ciderpress, Friday, 20 December 2019 21:59 (six years ago)

Yeah, but in that entire nearly 20 minute review, it's *exclusively* about performance. If I had heard even one good thing in the review about the game itself, even in passing, I might have actually bought it. But there's only so much praise for the frame rate of impeccable pixel rain can do to get me to pay.
