I know it shrunk, but I’m surprised by the lack of mainstream E3 coverage. I just read (on Polygon) that Sony and Nintendo both skipped E3 this year and Microsoft announced a new console and, yet, this morning CNBC mentioned E3 in passing but didn’t mention any of the announcements. I didn’t see anything in today’s paper. You’d think a Microsoft console announcement would be a big deal. I recall Microsoft’s Xbox One announcement was everywhere.

Last year I worried Cyberpunk, Starfield, and Elder Scrolls 6 would minimize future announcements until they are released (for me) and I think that’s right. I don’t care about anything right now except Nintendo announcements. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know if this is the appropriate ILG thread, but I’m really skeptical about the specifications Microsoft and Sony have announced. Even if the the systems cost, for example, 7-or-800 USD, they look very optimistic. 4 GB of GDDR6 will eat half that price. Likewise with the 1 GB SSD they described.

i'm more skeptical about the claims that the new consoles could hit 120fps given that today's consoles, even the beefed-up ps4 pro and xbox one x, can struggle to hit 60fps on the most ambitious games

hard to imagine either company launching at much more than $500 given certain past failures, they'll eat a loss if they have to

120fps / 8k talk is just 'the box will be able to output those', major games will not use them. the use case there is current gen ongoing service games getting a fps boost e.g. overwatch

also elder scrolls 6 is probably like 4-5 years away so don't let that one minimize other announcements for you

at a certain point the fps and Ks is reaching a point of diminishing returns but I guess that's all console makers can really push at this point is more more more

but RAYTRACING tho omg it's gonna make call of fifa: halo edition look incredible

anything beyond 4k is severely diminishing returns if you're playing on a tv that fits in your house

same with 60fps if you're not a pro FPS player

I just have this creeping sense of dread about Cyberpunk, like it'll be technically breathtaking but really crass and offensive, and the developer will half-heartedly apologise for doing sly shoutouts to neo-nazis three or four more times before release

It's mostly been from a community manager who was fired months after snarky appropriation of trans language and making vaguely pro-GG tweets. (Said manager then ended up at an openly alt-right place.) xp

i think it's unlikely that it was a single rogue employee but i think its also likely that they'll keep that shit out of their public facing stuff going forward so we won't ever know for sure

Luigi's Mansion, Hollow Knight sequel and Animal Crossing things in the next several months to look forward to. Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 (or remastered trilogy?) things to look forward to in the distant future. Witcher 3 on Switch seems surprising, given I just watched that Digital Foundry video on how many compromises it would take to get that to run on Switch. Fortunately, I already bought it on PS4. Doom and Wolfenstein ... I'll debate which system to purchase on (better graphics vs. gyro, essentially). Some OK stuff, though!

seiken densetsu 3 aka trials of mana getting an official english release (plus a remake) is a big deal, that game's had similar status to mother 3 for 2 decades

I've never played Animal Crossing but watched other people play for a few minutes. (btw, the upcoming game got pushed to next year). The trailer + treehouse gameplay are very underwhelming. Slightly more things to do. Slightly better graphics. Is it really that hard to come up with something truly innovative for Animal Crossing?

i don't think that's a goal for animal crossing, it's an iterative series. there are 10 million people who just want the game as they know it on current hardware.
