I'd decided that I don't have time for a Switch in my life, and was just obsessively reading this and the BOTW threads. But today I realized that maybe if I got a Switch I would spend less time on Twitter!

but everybody calls me, (lukas), Friday, 10 May 2019 22:59 (seven years ago)

the sweeetch is amazing, and you should rearrange your time for it. you might want to wait and see what this next gen of hardware will look like, though.

lately, been playing much lego city on the small screen in the kitchen with my 3.9 year old, which frees up the tv for my partner. it has revolutionized gaming in a single television shared living space.

For sure. When the rest of my family hits the basement to watch reality shows or whatever, I just take the Switch upstairs.

I never owned a WiiU, and I have been waiting to play Super MarioMaker for years—I am so so so excited to finally get the chance. I’m a long time watcher of SMM YouTube videos and twitch streams, it’ll be interesting to try my hand at it.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)

i'm a little worried that i'm going to pay $59 for it, build a single level that sucks and no one else plays, and then never play it again. but everyone who plays mario maker seems to love it so there's probably a lot more to it!

these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:32 (seven years ago)

i don't enjoy Making things other than music so i'm probably gonna wait a month or 2 on it until enough good levels are out there

ciderpress, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:48 (seven years ago)

I bought the first one bc I had a Wii U and I wanted to but I might skip this one out unless it has a full campaign from Nintendo packed in. In all likelihood the most fun I personally can have with this game will be watching videos of speed runners playing miserable levels

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:54 (seven years ago)

yeah it's a better stream game than it is a game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:57 (seven years ago)

anyone buying these "game vouchers"? with even nintendo titles offered in some sales, i'm not sure it's worth it.

i got bag sauce in my bag (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 16 May 2019 01:34 (seven years ago)

its essentially just a $20 discount if you buy 2 full price games at once, right?

i don't think there's 2 $60 games now or on the horizon that i want digitally, wld prefer physical copies of fire emblem and the like

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 May 2019 02:27 (seven years ago)

yeah, but you don't have to buy them at once. just within a year of when you purchased the vouchers.

i got bag sauce in my bag (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 16 May 2019 02:52 (seven years ago)

I’d go for it but even if I wanted to pick up like Yoshi and Mario Party I am in too deep on physical copies to change my mind now

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Thursday, 16 May 2019 05:08 (seven years ago)

Anyway the story mode might be enough for me to buy Maker 2, I can make a few bad levels and then just play the Nintendo levels and maybe Matt Thorson’s

Speaking of Fire Emblem, Famitsu had some crunchy details and some nerds translated and summarized https://serenesforest.net/2019/05/15/three-houses-second-famitsu-article-skills-crests-battalions-academy/

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Thursday, 16 May 2019 05:11 (seven years ago)

yeah i've gone into preview blackout on that one since there's some supposed story leaks floating around along with the officially released stuff

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 May 2019 13:07 (seven years ago)

attempting to give life advice to your students is a funny alternate take on the relationship mechanics though, i approve

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 May 2019 13:13 (seven years ago)

Anyone played Trine 2? Looks cool, seems to be well reviewed, never heard of it before.

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 18 May 2019 15:45 (seven years ago)

it's an old indie game, co-op platformer for 3 players. i played a bit of the first one and it was alright, i assume 2 is more of the same

ciderpress, Saturday, 18 May 2019 16:26 (seven years ago)

Trine games in my experience look lovely but play really clumsily, and don’t have anything really in the way of original ideas. Vanilla platforming with a bit of polish and some story tacked on.

JimD, Saturday, 18 May 2019 16:26 (seven years ago)

Resident Evil 4 for the Switch reportedly does not feature upgraded graphics or gameplay, drops the motion controls of the Wii version (and apparently lacks the motion controls they gave Revelations on Switch), and is digital only. And costs $10 more than the same game on PS or Xbox. That's kind BS.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 May 2019 22:06 (seven years ago)

I’ll echo the benefits of the switch in a one tv household. They should’ve had me cuddled up with my wife playing my switch while she watches Bravo instead of that loft party in the original commercials.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 20 May 2019 22:36 (seven years ago)

timespinner is getting a switch release next week. it's a nice little castlevania-like that i enjoyed, the story is a bit obtuse but it got the atmosphere just right.

now only $846

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:01 (six years ago)

I think we can assume there's no more Nintendo first party games left to announce through the end of 2019, but now the only thing we know for next year is Animal Crossing.

$60 for video games remains an absurd value, there are indie games I’ve paid $20 for that I wish were $60

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 03:31 (six years ago)

I don't wish anything cost more, but there are def. indie games (like Hollow Knight) that seemed impressively underpriced. I think the issue is that Zelda is a re-release (remade or no) being priced at a AAA premium. Yet something like Red Dead Redemption II retailed for $60, and I don't think anyone would compare the cost of making something like that to the cost of making this Zelda remake, or the "value" of a massive state of the art open world game to a much shorter story. And yet even something like Red Dead gets massive price drops down the line which Nintendo seemingly doesn't really do. Now, you can argue that something like Red Dead or whatever was *underpriced* but I think that's pretty moot. It really is simply a matter of Nintendo charging more, sometimes to a ridiculous degree. For example, again, when Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze came out, it actually cost *more* than it cost on the Wii-U, which was pretty lame.

TL;DR: You want value, I would much rather buy two (or three or four) AAA titles for my PS4 than one for the same price (and often lower specs) on the Switch. It's honestly the reason I haven't bought Wolfenstein II yet; it's literally twice as much on the Switch as it is on the PS4. There are def. games I would buy for Switch if they were $20 cheaper, so I guess my value point is just lower, as I'd rather save my money than overspend for no afaict good reason.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 13:36 (six years ago)

Excited about the Zeldas. Still no Wind Waker tho :/

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 14:44 (six years ago)

xp nintendo has had their hooks in you with these stories since your 8 bit youth. it costs money to protect these brands, and they don't wan't to devalue them by saturating the store with a bunch of lower priced stuff. you also need to factor in how many people will buy the remade zelda vs red dead redemption. you are greatly simplifying everything. We probably spend $60 per month on terrible kids meals when we eat out once a week. A $60 good nintendo game seems like an extreme value by comparison. I just don't have any time to play it.

Cecil replies to your e-mails (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 16:21 (six years ago)

Switch is sweet home and commute gaming ambrosia. Throw your ps4 into the ocean.

Cecil replies to your e-mails (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 16:23 (six years ago)

i dont mind paying the full 60 for a complete game, however i will not be playing the links awakening remake anytime soon as i've played the original a hundred times and there are like 50 other games coming out in september that i want to try

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:05 (six years ago)

The Treehouse section about Astral Chain has convinced me to buy the game, had no idea there was a "investigate the crime scene, solve the crime" side to it. Also like Nier Automata it starts with a shmup section, the director of both games said it makes it easier to have lots of exposition that way lol.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:27 (six years ago)

Josh you could always attribute the purchase incentive to the fact that Switch is portable, if that helps make it less painful when there are cheaper versions elsewhere to consider. Just purely from a consumer benefit perspective.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:35 (six years ago)

Yes, but you also have to apply the Controller Comfortability Factor, which is 1.25 for PS4 and between 0.52 and 0.85 for switch, depending on which controller you use

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:46 (six years ago)

Well, the bigger consideration that keeps me from justifying portability is the often big decline in performance and graphics. At least when it comes to ports. When it comes to premium Nintendo titles, the proprietary stuff, I am just being cheap. You talk about value in general, and yes, video games by and large are great values. But if a product is $40 on one system, and $60 on another, for the same game, then clearly the $60 one is less of a value.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

And speaking of switch controls, I am one of the many people that have been problems with drift on the left joycon.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

i hope you posted that with your left joycon

Cecil replies to your e-mails (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:55 (six years ago)

The left joycon was the source of almost all of my typos, before I completely stopped making them

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 17:59 (six years ago)

And if your left joycon causes you to drift, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your Switch than for your posts to have typos.
