Just a reminder, Cuphead is now out on the Switch!

Cuphead looks *so* gorgeous, but I've read a lot about how difficult it is, and after my experience with Hollow Knight (loved it but too difficult) and Dark Souls (too difficult, lost interest) I think I'll skip this time.

Difficulty depends on the player’s genre preferences, I think. I only played a couple hours of cuphead, but I found it easier than dark souls. I am really bad at 3D action games, but I feel at home in 2D

Buuut I don’t think I’ll buy it for switch (I played on a friend’s PC) because the d-pad hurts my fingers. Maybe I need to upgrade to the pro pad

pro d-pad has issues with ghost inputs on the diagonals, its not perfect either

Damn, I’m glad you mentioned that! I’ve beeen considering going pro but if I’m going to pay that much for an extra pad, I want it to be perfect

its the best controller for everything except for games that require d-pad precision

I use an 8bitdo pad with the switch on the rare occasion I have it hooked up to the TV, works great

yeah i'd look into 8bitdo stuff for a bluetooth pad with a good dpad. i personally love the dpad on the pokken controller, but that's wired and doesn't have sticks so its not an all purpose solution

oh, nice! i hadn't considered that. i might pick up one of their playstation pad imitations (SN30 Pro+)

i think you can also get an adapter to use a dualshock4 on switch but i havent looked into that

How have Nintendo managed to screw up a d-pad?? They invented the d-pad and I mean I’m not an expert or anything, but superficially at least, it looks like they’ve barely changed it at all since the nes.

Some mess about the configuration of the contacts. If you push eg in an upward direction on the left arm you can get an up input. It’s to be regretted.

basically if you take your pro controller and hold down just the right arm of the d-pad and shift the weight of your finger up and down you can get diagonal inputs because its too sensitive, even though you're not touching the up or down arms. same with any direction on it. theoretically this can happen a little bit with any d-pad thats not individual buttons if you're applying enough force, but the pro controller one is way more sensitive to it than e.g. the ds4.

apparently you can fix it with some surgery by using insulating tape to cover the inner half of the contact pads underneath but i haven't bothered to try since it's not too bad on the xenoblade model that i have.

But yeah thanks for the reminder here, I was all set to grab Cuphead but hadn’t stopped to think about the lack of anything appropriate to play it with.

i like the joycon disconnected d-pad! its only bad for fighting games where you have to do motions and such

Maybe stick would work but I know that pretty much every ps twitch shooter I’ve played over the last few years has given me the choice and I’ve ended up favouring the d-pad.

yeah, for intense dexterity games i have to use the d-pad. analog is out of the question.

pretty much any d-pad hurts my tender thumbs after hours of use (i had to quit celeste on ps4 two different times because of minor thumb injuries!), but the joycon version ends up hurting much more quickly. :(

yeah other than fighting games i prefer using the analog stick for anything with more than 4-way movement, even compared to a good dpad

You’ll be telling us you play Tetris with a stick next (my son does this and it makes me feel like I’ve failed as a parent (as does the fact he keeps his y-axis uninverted in FPS games)).

I have to play Tetris 99 with the Joy-Cons bc dpad is mandatory and I accidentally hard drop with the pro controller’s dpad which is unacceptable. But doing diagonal inputs on a dpad is the pits as far as I’m concerned.

I said "fuck it" and stopped trying to learn T-spins and just started playing with good garbage technique and I've come in 1st four times this past week.

Should I get Cuphead for the Switch? Y/n

I was happy to see that they changed the scoring for the 2nd Tetris 99 tournament; unfortunately I didn't realize it was even happening until the end of the 2nd day. :(

Also, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight finally went on sale, so I picked it up last night. Enjoying it very much so far.

i now have more hours on tetris than i do on botw + mario combined O_o

found this simple t-spin triple setup that helped me finally wrap my mind around them after a long time of mostly non-understanding (keep an eye on the pieces on the left, everything else is just filling in the gaps)
