That anime-looking mech battle game looks like it could be fun?
― DJI, Thursday, 14 February 2019 00:35 (five years ago) link
also the goombas are in the original heh. its a weird game
― ciderpress, Thursday, 14 February 2019 00:37 (five years ago) link
places third out of 99 on my first tetris99 game! i haven't played tetris in a long time so it felt pretty good. that was also the first version of tetris i've ever played where you could hold a piece for later. the targeting thing is interesting, i guess. i was too busy trying to play tetris that i found it difficult to glance at the side to pick who to target. near the end i was being targeted by 6 people at once. shortly thereafter i lost.
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 14 February 2019 01:20 (five years ago) link
okeydoke, tetris99 will end up somewhere on my coint & plick 2019 ballot. i had little interest in the recent tetris that everyone raved about because i really don't care about the graphics or what kinds of backgrounds are floating behind the pieces (i know there are many other improvements besides those). but playing against a bunch of people turns out to be a lot of fun

links awakening is a goat game and better than any other Zelda game
but
also not a Nintendo first party developed game iirc
so
hm
― the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Thursday, 14 February 2019 04:11 (five years ago) link
I’m getting my history mixed up. The engine was developed in collaboration with Intelligent Systems for another game. And they might as well be first party at this point so nm disregard previous post
― the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Thursday, 14 February 2019 04:14 (five years ago) link
the original links awakening started as an off the clock pet project of some nintendo devs iirc which is why it has some mario enemies in it but then got picked up as an official project. don't think intsys had anything to do with it
the later game boy zeldas were made by capcom, those are the only mainline zeldas that weren't made in-house at nintendo i think

Most importantly, it’s free, so the fun to expense ratio is...*plugs in numbers and calculates furiously*... 7

Or infinity. It’s 7 or infinity

the style is fine but not super exciting to me since nintendo's already got a ton of 'diorama' presentation games even if they're all a little different
― ciderpress, Thursday, 14 February 2019 06:03 (five years ago) link
to me they usually look off or lazy/incomplete but this one looks real classy + coherent

yeah, this looks and sounds great. and it feels like a good move and refreshing bridge to a true BotW successor.

Mario Maker is the best thing ever! It's so much better than any other community-creating ecosystem because the amazing, never-beat Mario platforming controls. So it'll never not feel good.

cute

the intsys game i mentioned is fan-translated into english as 'for the frog the bell tolls', it has the same engine as link's awakening -- though w/o action combat. i really should get around to playing this:

I thought it was just going to be DLC. TAKE MY MONEY!
(Now, an aside: I watched that and I though, wow, I can't wait for that movie to come out. I watched the Switch direct and thing, bleh, more generic anime fighting. Different strokes.)
So what's the big deal about the Zelda port? I never had a Gameboy.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 February 2019 12:53 (five years ago) link
it’s a ‘new’ zelda game on switch
that’s the big deal
― ||||||||, Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:22 (five years ago) link
it will be a nice holdover until breath of majora’s mask drops
― ||||||||, Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:23 (five years ago) link
also it’s generally regarded to be one of the better 2D zelda games I think
give us minish cap and four swords next. hell I’d take updates to the DS zeldas too pls
― ||||||||, Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:24 (five years ago) link
Link's Awakening is way better than any other handheld Zeldas. It basically shifted the direction for the entire series with its story, unique oddball characters and tropes. It's a truly beautiful game with a perfectly executed melancholy tone.
Looking forward to playing through it again.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:49 (five years ago) link
Link's Awakening is the only zelda I've ever enjoyed enough that I finished it, if that's indicative of anything (I don't like zeldas much) (I haven't tried BOTW yet) (I mean I've had BOTW waiting for over a year and haven't bothered to start it up so...)
― JimD, Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:52 (five years ago) link
agree that LA is best Zelda handheld game. apparently they were heavily influenced by Twin Peaks while making it, which explains a lot of the oddness.
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 14 February 2019 13:54 (five years ago) link
The only Zelda handheld I've played is Spirit Tracks...I think they could pass over that one in their remasters.
― L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 14 February 2019 14:00 (five years ago) link
a perfectly executed melancholy tone.
Yeah. I'm wondering whether the diorama-like art style from the trailer is really the right thing to recapture that. Feel like Link's Awakening should be more hazy and ethereal.

<whispers> but but I've got a 2 year old so I only play games about an hour a week these days and I've promised myself I'll finish Witcher 3 before I start anything new so that'll take me another 2 years at least but yeah i know, i know
― JimD, Thursday, 14 February 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link
i didn't finish witcher 3 either
― ciderpress, Thursday, 14 February 2019 15:14 (five years ago) link
2-year-olds nap for 2 to 3 hours each day. that leaves you 30 minutes of main quest progress after you've settled on the day's horse mane style

I’m sorry but what is more important levelling up your two year old or saving hyrule from ganondork. some people
― ||||||||, Thursday, 14 February 2019 15:33 (five years ago) link
You need to kill time until your 2yo is at least 11 and has their shit together, play zelda

Easier to level up children than Link, imo.
