i missed whatever the cauliflower meme was but just gonna roll with it and pretend I'm laughing
― ciderpress, Friday, 25 January 2019 15:30 (seven years ago)
Well, on the plus side "Spider-man" is not nearly as taxing as something like "Dark Souls," so maybe I'll be able to play it and Zelda concurrently. There's time for cauliflower experiments, too, especially since it's -7 outside right now.

ciderpress - josh has been posting about caulis over on the wild west main board that is ILE when he could have been doing more productive things like beating ganon
― ||||||||, Friday, 25 January 2019 16:08 (seven years ago)
Does "ganon" mean "eggs?"
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 January 2019 16:10 (seven years ago)
ganon eat the eggs

I picked up Hollow Knight a few weeks ago and I really love it but I'm pretty much stuck at this point.
Thinking of picking up Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight if it ever goes on sale. Has anyone here played it?
― cwkiii, Saturday, 26 January 2019 20:45 (seven years ago)
i played a couple of the older ones but not that one yet, they're solid indievanias
― ciderpress, Saturday, 26 January 2019 22:59 (seven years ago)
Maybe this should be for the absent-minded thread on ILE but I *finally* figured out how to raccoon fly in Super Mario 3, after three decades. Keep tapping, don't *hold* the button. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:52 (seven years ago)
whoooooooa that's great! flying is crucial in SMB3

soooooo can you not use the switch if it isn't connected to the internet?? all my games are downloaded and i tried using it in airplane mode and none of em work
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)
huh it should definitely work, what games were you trying to play? there was a firmware update yesterday, dunno if that affected things but it shouldn't
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:24 (seven years ago)
i was trying literally any of them
i read somewhere that if a device isn't your 'primary' console then you need an internet connection. i had mine stolen a while back. i dissociated that one from my account and got a new one, so i'm really hoping this isn't going to be some weird legacy
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:29 (seven years ago)
all the games i've downloaded throw up a load screen that says 'checking if the software can be played,' which i assumed was firmware-related but now seems to be a DRM check
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:31 (seven years ago)
oh right weird. did you go thru Nintendo customer service to do that or just use some function in their account system? it might still have yr new one designated as secondary
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:33 (seven years ago)
and yeah that's the same message it throws up if you preload a game that isn't out yet and try to run it
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:35 (seven years ago)
jfc -- i deregistered the old one remotely before setting up the new one and it's still showing the new one as not the primary console.
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:51 (seven years ago)
i tried deregistering again and it says you can't do it more than once a year
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:54 (seven years ago)
prob have to get Nintendo customer service to fix it for you then
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:57 (seven years ago)
infuriating
― gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:59 (seven years ago)
:(
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:59 (seven years ago)
Nintendo still kinda sucks at accounts, internet, everything other than making games and hardware
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:00 (seven years ago)
Their os’s are so weirdly bad
― Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:04 (seven years ago)
i like how lightweight the switch one is, it boots instantly, but it's coming at the expense of desirable features
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:33 (seven years ago)
the Switch OS has all the features I need: boots instantly, allows me to click on games
― Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:35 (seven years ago)
Nintendo account system is a confusing mess, but for what it is worth the one time I had to deal with customer service regarding the same they were super nice and helpful, even though it took a long time to straighten things out.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:35 (seven years ago)
the wii tho so bad
― Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:36 (seven years ago)

EG war groove review was quite muted
― ||||||||, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:17 (seven years ago)
it's advance wars with a couple neat tweaks and the ability to push balance patches, I don't need it to be an eye-opening evolution of advance wars
― Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:32 (seven years ago)
What are the "desirable features" you'd want? My only other experience is the PS3, which was so bad it actively made me not want to turn it on as a form of protest. (That's not to mention the whole YLOD thing - a console that doesn't even want to be used! Insane.) I like the Switch fine.
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:40 (seven years ago)
folders/organization mainly. if you have a lot of games the only way to view them afaict is a giant grid of tiles
themes would be fun too but i can live without cosmetic stuff like that
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:56 (seven years ago)
slay the spire looks good
― ||||||||, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:32 (seven years ago)
its very good based on watching friends play it. the new steamworld game looks to be a deckbuilder as well
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:36 (seven years ago)
Slay the spire is great fun
― Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:39 (seven years ago)
Been getting into Slay the Spire a lot. My after work routine for the last week has been roll a J, drink tea, play StS for a hour. Being not good doesn't affect how much I love the gameplay - I've got to the 2nd boss only once and died fairly quickly. Stringing a streak of cards together so the effects multiply into a massive whooping is incredibly satisfying.
I haven't gotten into deck-builders before, they always seemed such faff. Having to play Gwent was (on of) my least favourite bit of Witcher 3. Have I judged the genre unfairly, or is StS just next level?
― closed beta (NotEnough), Thursday, 31 January 2019 09:37 (seven years ago)
sts is exceptional but i do like the genre in general
― Mordy, Thursday, 31 January 2019 13:02 (seven years ago)
gwent isnt really a deckbuilder iirc
i don't know of any other games besides StS that implement the deckbuilder thing well in a video game, theres a ton of tabletop ones though and some are good
