There's a delightful scene set in a jazz club which kind of captures the essence of this game: awkward and stuttering but slowly fills in its empty spaces with charm and magic. And later, the new powers that you get which give even MOAR magic. And the dialogue, even though it's mostly unvoiced (and even when it is, it's just a Japanese interpretation of what French sounds like (which really is even more delight)), is so well written and funny.

I should also mention the visceral delight of just crashing into the ground and through things.

There is a side quest where you have to fill up a meter called DOGGY JOY.

(Sadly, that side quest is otherwise unfun.)

Oleeever St. John Yogurty (Leee), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 18:02 (seven years ago)

Are the dogs into some dark shit?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 19:17 (seven years ago)

Nah, the gameplay mechanics are rubbish.

Oleeever St. John Yogurty (Leee), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:28 (seven years ago)

Dead Cells slightly on sale now: https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP4016-CUSA11253_00-DEADCELLS0000000

Oleeever St. John Yogurty (Leee), Friday, 25 January 2019 21:42 (seven years ago)

can't decide whether it's worth paying a little more to have it on the switch...

Mordy, Friday, 25 January 2019 21:46 (seven years ago)

Alright, i'll finally give this a shot; seems like it's very much up my alley.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 25 January 2019 21:53 (seven years ago)

Deep PS4 steam discounts:
$1 for Grim Fandango, Bard's Tale and Inner Space
$10 for Broken Age, Wasteland 2, Talos Principle and Layers of Fear + above
$15 for Shadow Warrior 2, Killing Floor 2 + above

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 22:17 (seven years ago)

i'm guessing Shadow Warrior and Killing Floor not worth paying for the top tier?

Nhex, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 03:00 (seven years ago)

Probably not...but I've paid 15 anyway.

JimD, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 11:21 (seven years ago)

I just remembered that I have a PS4 20% off coupon that's set to expire this month, I was probably saving it for an early TLOU2 release but clearly that's not happening. Gimme non-soulsborne rex!

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:08 (seven years ago)

whatve you played and liked already

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:16 (seven years ago)

have you played yakuza 0

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:20 (seven years ago)

TLOU is god-tier
Hollow Knight would be too if I were better at it/it weren't so hard
HZD, Nier Automata, Persona 5 all have various flaws but once they hit, it feels like a kiss
Dead Cells I just started, outside of my usual comfort zone but good
GOW is fun, good combat mechanix, but ultimately a shallow experience
LIS1 peaked about halfway through then completely cratered
Witcher 3 boring
Bloodborne ugh not my thing

PS - no horror games.

Maybe GTA5? MGS5 (MGS4 ruined the franchise for me)?

Havne't played any of the Yakuzas, is that the right entry point?

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:26 (seven years ago)

yes, 0 is the entry point, its a prequel to the series thats intended as such

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:29 (seven years ago)

RDR2? Horizon Zero Dawn I liked a lot - probably inexpensive now.

Mordy, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:30 (seven years ago)

Isn't RDR2 slow and huge? That's among the things I disliked about Witcher 3. HZD is pretty small by comparison.

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:34 (seven years ago)

absolutely do yakuza 0

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:36 (seven years ago)

spidey spidey spidey

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:40 (seven years ago)

seconding spidey; it's great

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 1 February 2019 03:46 (seven years ago)

I've finished the main story and am still playing, just tooling around, whacking fools. i NEVER do that. the core mechanics are so satisfying that actually i occasionally kind of resent having to play the main story??

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 February 2019 09:44 (seven years ago)

MGS5 is great, both wolfenstein games, doom. skyrim if you haven't already gone there. Leftfield pick: Rayman, charming, easy but such fun.

thomasintrouble, Friday, 1 February 2019 12:30 (seven years ago)

Spider-man is tons of fun.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:40 (seven years ago)

I forgot my usual caveat of no first person games! So no Doom or Wolfenstein obviously but that also rules out Skyrim.

Tracer, I’m like you in that after I beat the base game I’m usually done with it, but I’ve NEVER experienced gameplay that feels good enough to want to play just for its sensuousness. Maybe I’ll play Spidey eventually but it’ll probably need to be in the $20 range with the DLC included.

Yakuza does sound like it’s my speed though!

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

is no first person for motion sickness reasons or do you just not like it

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2019 17:40 (seven years ago)

You can play Skyrim in 3rd person

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 February 2019 17:42 (seven years ago)

Motion sickness. I couldn't even get through Edith Finch!

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 17:57 (seven years ago)

I also think that I need a strong central narrative. I'm not interested in simply exploring the world and coming up with my own stories.

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Friday, 1 February 2019 18:14 (seven years ago)

ok guys overcooked might be the best local multiplayer I've ever experienced

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 February 2019 22:01 (seven years ago)

it's scarily addictive

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 February 2019 22:01 (seven years ago)

days gone looks like the AAA game equivalent of nu-metal

fucking hell, it took me 2 hours to load and it was like a bad channel 5 late night movie or something. Lousy gameplay, hmm let's follow a horse for nearly 10 minutes with some tedious expository "world building" dialogue. not for me.

calzino, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:09 (seven years ago)

same

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:29 (seven years ago)

glad I'm not the only one who thinks that because this is my first games console action since about 2001. maybe the online version might be fun though.

calzino, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:53 (seven years ago)

Skyrim does have a central story, and it's pretty good even though there's not a lot of it. And if you play the main track of the game it's pretty linear.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:05 (seven years ago)

rockstar games are popular because of the graphics and the scale and the "detail porn" aka depth of simulation, not the gameplay.

ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:12 (seven years ago)

i can't imagine someone disliking Witcher but liking Skyrim unless theyre specifically into the character customization

ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:14 (seven years ago)

Hi, I'm that person. Witcher looks gross to me.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 4 February 2019 18:14 (seven years ago)

I'm not a Witcher fan, either.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 4 February 2019 18:35 (seven years ago)

yeah i get it but i mean in terms of making recommendations I'd need a pretty strong read there

ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 18:37 (seven years ago)

The Witcher is the Red Dead of fantasy videogame RPGs.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 4 February 2019 18:39 (seven years ago)

I on't like Rockstar games nor anything that dwells in that gamespace.

RDR2 has a really slow intro, and if you didn't like the story during that part you're not going to like where it goes from there, most likely. i found it to be really fun once it opened up to an actual open world game, but it takes several hours of gameplay before you're past the tutorial missions and you can finally get a decent setup with most of core game mechanics unlocked. by the time you get that far, you'll have watched the guy ride his horse and have really dumb conversations for a really long time, though

Karl Malone, Monday, 4 February 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

don't play online

Karl Malone, Monday, 4 February 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

good general advice for gaming in 2019

To play devil's advocate against my own feelings on this subject: PERSONA 5 has a painfully slow and protracted tutorial dungeon, but it ended up loving the game.

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Monday, 4 February 2019 22:28 (seven years ago)

persona is on like a different planet from AAA open world games though, apples and oranges

ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 22:33 (seven years ago)

play yakuza 0

chihuahuau, Monday, 4 February 2019 23:46 (seven years ago)

I most probably will! Just going to wait till the end of the month (when my coupon expires) in case it goes on sale.

Stateleee, Plump Buck Mulleeegan (Leee), Monday, 4 February 2019 23:48 (seven years ago)

I was going to curse the PS4 Media player but it is actually very good. It wasn't initially working because it doesn't recognise any files unless you put them in a folder. Not tried its subtitles capabilities yet though.
