a good new reboot would be cool but i'd appreciate more new flagship series, not so much the nintendo version of a popular genre (like Splatoon 2) but instead just new directions like...Pikmin (which i've never played) ?
― Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:04 (seven years ago)
Splatoon is barely a "Nintendo version of popular genre", it's as fresh as anything they've made imo
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:11 (seven years ago)
i like splatoon a lot. but it's a team-based first person shooter. it's a cool spin on it!
― Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:14 (seven years ago)
it's not a fps!
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:14 (seven years ago)
but yeah i get what you're saying but i have no idea what stones they could have left unturned at this point
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:20 (seven years ago)
xp
ok, yeah, lol
it mostly plays like one, though. there are different abilities and ways to hop around the levels and whatnot (kind of like overwatch). anyway, it's all silly, i wasn't trying to make some sort of statement about splatoon, i just want more things that feel genuinely new.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:23 (seven years ago)
it's so hard to make something like that in 2018 though
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:26 (seven years ago)
2019
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:27 (seven years ago)
:D i've done that about 20 times this year already. but yeah, i agree. not saying it's easy. but nintendo made it's name on occasionally changing the game, so i always hold out a little hope that they can do it again.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:29 (seven years ago)
ITS
i do enjoy the beloved franchises and the reboots, too, of course. i look forward to them - i'd love to see a new f-zero or metroid, and BotW was still incredibly fun to play despite not being a completely new genre.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 06:31 (seven years ago)
josh
have you played botw yet
― twitter is bad not good (||||||||), Friday, 11 January 2019 07:30 (seven years ago)
Nope (and not Odyssey either, fwiw). I was busy with Dark Souls and a) Zelda seems like too much of a (generally) similar endeavor/commitment and b) I'm not a huge Zelda fan, having only ever played the first one. Lately been distracted by Smash Bros. and getting ready to play some Spider-man on PS4, which looks fun. So Zelda (and Mario) gets punted again! But I'll get there, eventually, especially, if no big Switch releases come down the pipe. For example, not interested in Yoshi for the same reason I wasn't interested in Kirby, not interested in party games or JRPGs, not interested in turn-based strategy games, etc., so all's quiet on the Nintendo front.

guys can we lead an intervention on josh pls
It's about time management! Between family, and movies, and books, there are only so many hours.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 January 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)
So, like, is the intervention to get me to play it?
I'm sure spiderman is good but c'mon dude
― L'assie (Euler), Friday, 11 January 2019 14:14 (seven years ago)
I already said it's because I can't commit to another collect-and-explore open world epic right now. Unless Zelda is not like that?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 January 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)
Maybe Spider-man is like that! I also have God of War, Last of Us, Uncharteds, etc. And other Soulsborne games to get to. You think Zelda is bad, god knows when or if I'll ever get around to Witcher 3. (I had a modest shortlist of Ps4 games I wanted, and I think I've got them all, thanks to various sales.)
I think my favorite types of games might be the likes of Hollow Knight and Steamworld 2 and hell, maybe even Dark Souls, which played a lot like a 3D Metroidvania.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 January 2019 14:23 (seven years ago)
BOTW is good but overhyped. Can understand not wanting to jump into it right after Dark Souls because it is roughly in the same sphere. Spider-Man is fun and a fine choice imo.
― circa1916, Friday, 11 January 2019 14:28 (seven years ago)
you're not helping circa :)
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 11 January 2019 17:45 (seven years ago)
intervene on circa too pls

went to gamestop today for the first time in years to trade in some switch games and it definitely has the feel of "this place won't exist in 2 more years" that i got from music stores when those were on the way out.
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:08 (seven years ago)
it's half poorly-merchandised toys
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 11 January 2019 18:10 (seven years ago)
I would have given you more money for switch games than Gamestop probably did
― Evan, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:13 (seven years ago)
i didn't want money, i wanted tales of vesperia
wasn't trading in anything particularly good
― ciderpress, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:19 (seven years ago)
The Gamestop near my work experimented with selling retro games for a little bit. It was a fun little thing that got removed after a few months. Really, why aren't they doing this? They get way more profit and it creates an actual incentive for brick and mortar visits and impulse buys. Otherwise there's nothing to differentiate the stores from each other or online.
"Can I help you?" "Nope, just here browsing this wall of 30 empty cases for Super Smash Brothers- same as last week."
― Evan, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:40 (seven years ago)
Fair enough!
Or I guess they do this already, but only go as far back as the Wii. Why not sell all types? Yes, condition is something they'd have to deal with, but afaik they already have an online store for retro anyway.
― Evan, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:44 (seven years ago)
Not that I'm in really in Gamestop's corner, but visit one between September and October and they're all flooded. The toys/merchandising/ThinkGeek stuff probably was a wise move to stay alive.
― Nhex, Friday, 11 January 2019 18:44 (seven years ago)
Katamari Damacy is still reliably bizarre and the HD makeover for Switch, though cursory, is good enough; but my muscle memory is so keyed to Dualshock2 that the Switch sticks arrangement has taken some adjustment. I love this game though, will happily fail levels over and over so I can hear the music again.
― Twelves, Thursday, 17 January 2019 23:21 (seven years ago)
Also considering revisiting Tales Of Vesperia but the steps necessary for getting the best weapon for the enigmatic lady warrior were gigantically convoluted and exceptionally easy to mess up very early in the game, with no indication that you'd done so so until much later on. There was also some late-game uber-weapon sidequest that once started, whether completed or not, made the last boss 3x longer and harder. Never completed it as a result but it was definitely the best Tales I've played. Will probably succumb once it's in the sale but current price seems a bit steep.
― Twelves, Thursday, 17 January 2019 23:31 (seven years ago)
i'm enjoying it but i'm generally content to ignore arcane side stuff like that in old jrpgs. it's not nearly as good as berseria so far though imo
― ciderpress, Friday, 18 January 2019 01:03 (seven years ago)
Anyone bought the new Mario so far, and been plussed or nonplussed?
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 21 January 2019 16:19 (seven years ago)
it's a remake of the wii u title, right? i will definitely pick it up at some point because i've never played it and i love 2D mario
― Karl Malone, Monday, 21 January 2019 16:22 (seven years ago)
yeah its just a port of the wii u version bumped up to 1080p and with the luigi expansion included
as i said upthread i found the prior NSMB games to be bland and conservative, but they're basically just iterations on super mario world so if more super mario world sounds good to you then that's what you're getting.
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 January 2019 16:28 (seven years ago)
My boy is loving it

― ciderpress, Monday, 21 January 2019 20:59 (seven years ago)
Is there any catch buying games from eBay?
Seem to be a few "new & sealed" ones on there £10-£20 below usual price
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 09:45 (seven years ago)
shouldnt be any catch if they're actually sealed
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)
indies direct tomorrow, i think wargroove might be dropping finally
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:20 (seven years ago)
The catch would be somewhere in the description if it were a scam, like "photo only" or something silly.
― Evan, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:53 (seven years ago)
it's US only still but dekudeals.com is a v useful price tracker for switch games, being able to see the history is great for knowing whats actually a good sale price for a particular game bc every publisher does things differently
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 15:01 (seven years ago)
must be a non zero chance RE2 comes to switch right ?
― ||||||||, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 18:32 (seven years ago)
this year's remake? non-zero I guess but I wouldn't count on it
