I want to pick up a new game at a physical store (the experience!). Any recommendations?

I could just keep getting established Nintendo IP titles because they're reliable but on the other hand I've been hopelessly addicted to Binding of Isaac and kind of want to get hip to another less obvious choice. I'm somewhat well informed about the landscape of games but I want to know what everyone likes the most (those of you here that seem to consume a good variety of titles).

For example:

- I've played the legendary GBC Shantae but how do you like the new one?
- Is Cave Story really good?
- I'm not usually gravitating to JRPGs or game-that-this-less-cartoony-character-from-Smash-is-from titles but does anything stand out considerably?
- Are the newer Mega Man games in those collections providing any incentive to buy or should I just stick to the classics on my Classic Minis
- I like the idea of Wild Guns but I've just been so awful at the original on emulator...

I am both aware and horribly out of the loop at the same time.

josh in chi you gotta get katamari. it's a classic game

Karl Malone, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

xp evan

cave story is great! it's on the shorter side, but during the 10 or so hours you play you'll have a good ol' time

(might be more like 15 or 20 or 8, it's been a while since i played it)

Karl Malone, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

xp yup, Cave Story is a modern classic

Nhex, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:53 (five years ago) link

new shantae is just okay, the better one is pirates curse which is on the eshop and still isn't really a classic or anything, just a solid retro platformer

cave story is good, i haven't tried it again in the wake of the millions of indie sidescrollers it spawned but i suspect it still holds up fine

i dunno what other gameplay genres you like, all the good platformers on switch are first party Nintendo games or indie eshop games which don't fit your going to the store to buy something criteria

ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

could buy Tropical Freeze at the store

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 7 January 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

i don't watch much of agdq usually but kinda excited for the trop freeze run which i think is tonight

btw im pretty sure samus is the only non-cartoony smash char if you go by source material

ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 20:20 (five years ago) link

You know what I mean though... like: Villager vs. Roy

Evan, Monday, 7 January 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

And thanks all!

I think Link to the Past or Zelda series in general is my ideal game type to address that comment.

I love the randomization aspect to Binding of Isaac and the format so I'm pretty hooked on it. Once you get to know that game it is a deep dive and the thrill of seeing what a seed gives you this time is the key to the addiction.

Platformers are great (but TBH I'm just not terribly good at them though I do try) and I'm always attracted to a stand out title.

Love Trop Freeze! I hit a wall (see above) but will eventually try to come back to it.

Turn based RPGs are great and I love the world building but I'm no good at them in general and/or I'm overwhelmed by the fight mechanics. FF6 and Chrono Trigger were kicking my ass on recent attempts and I figured I'm just not as schooled in it. I would usually co-pilot those type of games so the pressure wasn't really on me.

boi is a v special game tbf

Mordy, Monday, 7 January 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

all the good zelda-adjacent games arent on here yet, unless Ys 8 counts but that's almost closer to a character action game than a zelda with how much dodging/parrying you have to do

ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

i dont think it has a physical version but have you played hyper light drifter?

ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

I have not!

Evan, Monday, 7 January 2019 21:57 (five years ago) link

If I were to play Binding of Isaac would you guys recommend the Switch version over the $5 version on Steam?

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 01:47 (five years ago) link

i've only ever played it on a laptop so i can't say how controller stacks up vs keyboard but i think either you're likely to get an amazing gaming experience so probably pick whichever one you'd prefer to play on (or the cheaper one if all else is equal)

I have it on Switch- it's great on there! But I can't really say it beats it for $5 on PC...

My current set up makes it really easy to play in the living room and it's definitely fun as a portable option. So points there.

But $5 is a steal and currently it's taking a weirdly long time for the Switch version to update to the latest version. Should be any day now really but currently it's a version behind and is missing some items types, enemy types etc.

i've got the card game mcmillen made i haven't played it yet but it looks fun tho not as inspired as the original

Oh! Report back when you do.

some more release dates starting to trickle out

Yoshi's Crafted World - March 29
Dragon's Dogma port - April 23

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 01:13 (five years ago) link

Bought both Guacamelles today, because they seemed to be on sale and look like cool games. Played a bit of the first, it's silly fun.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 01:19 (five years ago) link

There's a Switch version of Out Run out today! A handheld version of the arcade, life would be fucking sweet if I was 8-year-old me now.

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 10 January 2019 15:59 (five years ago) link

Which Out Run? the 2d one from the 80s? or one of the early 2k's 3d ones?

Also need consensus on NDMBUDS

Loved Odyssey, Loved Marios 3 & World, was kinda blah on DK Tropical Freeze

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 10 January 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

aw nuts, i woulda bought one of the 3d ones on the spot re: outrun, i just played plenty of the 2d one in Yakuza 0 anyway haha

man there are few games i like as much as outrun 3d/2/2003/whatever it was called, that shit cancelled some panic attacks for me on darker days

suggest boban (Will M.), Thursday, 10 January 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

OutRun 2006: Coast2Coast

that's the one

suggest boban (Will M.), Thursday, 10 January 2019 16:53 (five years ago) link

i don't like the NSMB games, they're Nintendo at their most conservative. if you like super mario world they're basically just more of that with a clinical modern take on the presentation. ive only played the wii one but nothing I've seen of this one suggests its any more than a hd iteration on that. they do have co-op though

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 January 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

Interesting development on the Smash Bros. front: my 14-year old daughter is hopeless, but my 11-year old often wins!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:06 (five years ago) link

I think it exposes players that get by on button mashing. It doesn’t work to your advantage in that game the way it does in something like street fighter

Evan, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:12 (five years ago) link

Anyway apropos of nothing here’s my most anticipated right now

Untitled Goose Game
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Wargroove
Mineko’s Night Market
Animal Crossing
Pokémon 2019
Luigi’s Mansion 3???
Daemon X Machina?????

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:16 (five years ago) link

mine is basically just fire emblem rn i need to see more first for everything else

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:20 (five years ago) link

Oh right fire emblem, I’m into that

I’m dropping Amazon prime finally so I’m not sure if I’ll be doing physical preorders this year, we’ll see what happens.

I'm sceptical re wargroove. not sure I really want an non-intelligent systems AW rip. similarly I'd like UGG to be good but colour me hmmmm for now

most anticipated:

animal crossing
luigi's mansion 3
fire emblem
dusk
wonderful 101 (port)?
obra dinn?
super mega baseball II??
pikmin 4??
persona 5??
zelda game in botw engine II???

twitter is bad not good (||||||||), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:39 (five years ago) link

the yoshi game looks great presentation-wise but those games don't always get the gameplay into a satisfying place where it's not just too easy or too slow all the time

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:40 (five years ago) link

Sadly there is nothing I've seen coming out on Switch that I'm excited about at all, but I'm generally a Nintendo 1st-party AAA title kinda guy. I've got my Mario, Kart, Smash and Zelda.

DJI, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:54 (five years ago) link

XXP I don't mind if they reuse the BotW engine, but I really hope the next Zelda is as different from BotW as BotW was from previous Zeldas. I had no idea Dusk was headed to Switch, I found out about that game only recently and it looks like a blast.

days of being riled (zchyrs), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:56 (five years ago) link

last thing I saw on dusk said that the developers were working hard on the console releases, with switch prioritised over PS4/xbone

twitter is bad not good (||||||||), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:57 (five years ago) link

theres been rumblings that the 2d zelda team may have a game coming

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:57 (five years ago) link

yoshi games seem like the place where mediocre nintendo ideas go to die. (i don't count SMW:Yoshi's Island as a Yoshi game).
